To trim a video that is already on YouTube, open YouTube Studio on a computer, go to Content, select the video, and choose Editor. Use Trim & cut to shorten the beginning or end, or choose New cut to remove a section from the middle. Preview carefully before saving: YouTube says saved Studio Editor changes cannot be undone with “Revert to original.”
Trim an uploaded video in YouTube Studio
This is the built-in route for correcting a video that is already uploaded. According to YouTube Help, the editor can shorten the start or end and remove a middle section without uploading a replacement. The video keeps its URL, views, and comments.
- On a computer, sign in to YouTube Studio.
- Open Content and select the video you want to edit.
- Choose Editor.
- Select Trim & cut. To shorten the start or end, adjust the blue box so it covers the footage you want to keep. To remove footage in the middle, select New cut and mark the section to remove.
- Enter precise timestamps if needed, then preview the edit. You can undo an individual cut before saving or discard pending changes.
- When satisfied, save the edit. Allow time for YouTube to process it.
Check these limits before saving
- Video duration: YouTube Help says this editing feature applies to videos shorter than six hours.
- High-view videos: YouTube says unedited videos with over 100,000 views may not allow saved changes other than face blurring. The restriction does not apply to channels in the YouTube Partner Program.
- Saved edits: As of June 2025, YouTube says changes saved in Studio Editor cannot be undone using Revert to original. Keep a separate copy of the source if you may need the unedited version, and review the preview closely before saving.
Which editing tool should you use?

For a quick correction to an existing upload, start with Studio. Choose a desktop editor when you need to shape the timeline or make broader creative changes before uploading. These tools serve different workflows, so their feature lists alone do not establish one as objectively best or easiest.
Common problems and fixes
- The edit controls are unavailable: Confirm you are editing your own video in Studio on a computer, and check that it is shorter than six hours. If it is an unedited video with over 100,000 views, YouTube’s stated restriction may apply unless the channel is in the YouTube Partner Program.
- The wrong material is being removed: For a middle section, use New cut and mark what should be removed. For a shorter opening or ending, adjust the blue keep-range box under Trim & cut. Preview before saving.
- You need to reverse a saved edit: YouTube says saved Studio Editor changes cannot be undone through Revert to original as of June 2025. If preserving the original matters, keep a separate source copy before editing.
