Start with the exact video request that fails: identify whether it is a master playlist, a child playlist, or a media segment, then trace that path through CloudFront to its origin. The most common troubleshooting mistake is treating “the stream” as one object: manifests and segments can use different paths, cache behaviors, and origins, so a working playlist does not prove that playback requests are routed correctly.
Use the sequence below to separate routing, origin, caching, playlist metadata, and monitoring problems. CloudFront distributes packaged video; it does not create the manifests or segments. AWS documents workflows for formats including HLS, MPEG DASH, Smooth Streaming, and CMAF.
1. Identify the request that fails
Open the browser or player’s network panel and reproduce the issue. Record the full request path, query string, HTTP status, response headers, and approximate time. Determine whether the failed object is the initial master playlist, a child playlist, or a media segment.
Test the same object through the CloudFront URL and, where appropriate, directly against the origin. Account for any required authorization when comparing the requests; an origin request that omits required credentials is not a valid comparison. AWS’s live streaming guidance describes the separate manifest and segment requests used in these workflows.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
2. Check the matching cache behavior and origin
In the CloudFront distribution configuration, match the failing path and file extension against the ordered cache behaviors. Verify that the request selects the intended path pattern and origin, and check the behavior’s allowed methods and viewer protocol policy. A path that selects the wrong endpoint can return 404 even when the content exists elsewhere.
Confirm that both manifests and segments have appropriate routes. The patterns depend on the packaging format; AWS’s MediaPackage examples distinguish HLS/CMAF manifests such as .m3u8 from .ts or .mp4 segments, and DASH .mpd manifests from .mp4 segments. Use the patterns appropriate to your actual origin and packaging, rather than copying an example blindly. See AWS’s CloudFront live-streaming examples.

3. Interpret the status code at both layers
Compare the viewer-facing response with the origin’s response and logs. A 4xx or 5xx shown to the viewer may reflect the origin response or CloudFront’s handling of it; the result depends on the status, error-caching settings, selected response headers, and in some 5xx cases whether an object is already cached. An origin timeout is treated as a 5xx failure. AWS documents these cases in CloudFront HTTP status code handling.
- 403: Check the origin response and the request’s authorization or access requirements, then verify the selected behavior and origin mapping. The status alone does not identify which layer rejected the request.
- 404: Verify the exact object path at the origin and whether the manifest or segment request matched the intended behavior. A manifest can load while a segment path is routed to a different endpoint.
- 5xx or timeout: Inspect origin health and origin logs alongside the CloudFront response. If the origin has recovered but viewers still receive errors, check whether a cached error remains.
4. Check whether an error is being cached
CloudFront’s documented default error-caching duration is 10 seconds. You can configure an Error Caching Minimum TTL for individual status codes. A longer duration may keep an error visible after the origin is fixed; an extremely short duration can increase requests to an unhealthy origin. The error response’s Cache-Control: max-age, s-maxage, or Expires headers can also affect how long it is cached. Review the current settings and trade-off in AWS’s error caching documentation.

After correcting an origin or object, retest the same URL and check its cache outcome before changing several TTLs at once. That helps distinguish a lingering cached error from an origin that is still returning the failure.
5. If the playlist loads but playback fails, inspect metadata and freshness
For HLS, check that the response metadata matches the content. In AWS’s HLS tutorial, the playlist content type is application/vnd.apple.mpegurl, and the MPEG-TS segment content type is video/mp2t. Also verify that the playlist references segment paths that exist and are reachable through the expected behavior. See AWS’s CloudFront HLS tutorial.

If a playlist has changed but viewers receive an older version, inspect its Cache-Control TTL and invalidate the relevant object if needed. A first Miss from cloudfront for an object at an edge location is expected; later requests may be cache hits. Do not treat a first miss by itself as evidence of a fault.
6. Apply live-playlist query settings only to the matching workflow
For AWS MediaPackage low-latency HLS (LL-HLS), AWS’s instructions say to forward the _HLS_msn and _HLS_part query parameters on manifest requests to support blocking playlist requests. The MediaPackage m parameter is included in the cache key in the examples, which also specify a minimum TTL of five seconds or less to help prevent stale content. These settings are specific to the described MediaPackage workflow; they are not universal cache settings for every CloudFront origin. Follow the applicable AWS live-streaming instructions for your setup.

7. Correlate the request with CloudFront evidence
Use the request timestamp, path, status, and cache outcome to line up viewer symptoms with distribution data. Choose the evidence source according to how quickly you need request-level detail:
- CloudFront metrics and reports: Review distribution-level trends and the relevant reporting views.
- CloudWatch metrics: Check the available CloudFront metrics for changes around the incident.
- Standard access logs: Use them for historical request analysis. AWS says they usually arrive within an hour, but some entries can be delayed up to 24 hours, so they are not real-time proof. See the standard logging reference.
- Real-time logs: Use request-level evidence sooner if real-time logging is configured for the distribution. See AWS’s real-time logging documentation.
- CloudTrail: Review API activity history when you need to correlate a configuration change with the incident.
CloudFront’s request behavior also matters when interpreting logs: AWS states that “CloudFront always caches responses to GET and HEAD requests.” Consult AWS’s status-code guidance alongside the access and real-time log references.
8. Choose a fix that matches the failure
- Wrong path or endpoint: Correct the cache behavior pattern or origin mapping for the specific manifest or segment request.
- Origin error or timeout: Resolve the origin-side failure, then retest through CloudFront and account for any cached error.
- Stale playlist: Review the playlist TTL and invalidate changed content where appropriate; for LL-HLS MediaPackage, use the workflow-specific query and TTL guidance above.
- Interruptions on poor network connections: Consider offering lower-bitrate variants so the player can adapt. AWS discusses this mitigation in its CloudFront for Media whitepaper.
Or let it run in the cloud
