There is no single confirmed fix for every OBS VLC source that fails after several hours. First determine whether OBS itself exits, the source freezes while OBS stays open, or playback simply stops. Then reproduce the issue with one file or playlist and change one variable at a time. The cases reported publicly involve different platforms and media setups, so treat them as diagnostic leads—not proof of a universal OBS or VLC bug.
Identify what “crashing” means
A delayed failure can describe several different symptoms. They need different evidence, so note exactly what happens before changing settings.
- OBS crashes: the OBS process closes or reports an error. Save the OBS log and any crash report.
- The VLC source freezes: OBS remains responsive, but the picture stops or the source no longer advances.
- Playback stops: the source remains present, but the file or playlist ends, fails to load the next item, or otherwise stops playing.
OBS forum reports describe both delayed crashes and a network-playlist freeze, while other reports concern specific media files. A failure after hours is not enough by itself to identify the cause. See the delayed VLC Video Source crash report and network playlist freeze report.
Record the setup and capture a reproduction
Before troubleshooting, write down the operating system, OBS Studio version, VLC version, media format, and whether the source uses local files or a network stream. Also note whether it is one looping file, a playlist that changes tracks, or another arrangement. Record how long it takes to fail and whether OBS stays open.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Reproduce the issue if practical, then save the OBS log for that session. If OBS exits, retain its crash report as well.
- Note the source and media settings that matter to the failure, including whether looping or track changes are enabled.
- Observe OBS memory use during a comparable run. A rise is useful evidence to record, but it does not by itself prove a leak or identify its cause.
Do not treat old issue reports as evidence that a current OBS release has the same defect. For example, one report concerned macOS 10.15.4 with OBS 25.0.8, and another concerned macOS 13 with OBS 29.1.3. These are historical, setup-specific cases: FLV playback memory-growth report and invalid-file crash report.
Isolate a local-file problem
If the source plays a local video, make a duplicate scene and test with one file. Keep the original scene unchanged so you can compare results and restore your setup.

- In the duplicate scene, leave only the affected VLC Video Source and test the same file under the same playback conditions.
- Check whether the file plays normally outside OBS. If it does not, investigate the file before drawing conclusions about the OBS source.
- Try the same local file using OBS Media Source. Compare whether playback works, whether the problem returns over a similar runtime, what happens to OBS memory use, and whether the log or crash report differs.
- If one file appears implicated, test a separately re-encoded copy in the same controlled setup. Change no other variable for that comparison.
A macOS user reported that Media Source looked promising for their video, and a separate user said re-encoding appeared to resolve one looping-file crash. These are individual experiences, not confirmed general fixes or proof that either source is more stable in every case. The reports are documented in the OBS VLC crash discussion and video media source crash discussion.
Media validity can matter in at least some cases: an OBS issue report described a macOS 13/OBS 29.1.3 crash after an invalid file was added to VLC Video Source and its properties were closed. That immediate-crash reproduction is different from a failure after hours, but it is a reason to verify the file rather than assume every failure is caused by the source itself (issue report).

Isolate a network-playlist freeze
If VLC Video Source is receiving a network stream or playlist, test that separately from local files. A reported YouTube playlist ingested as a VLC network stream froze after about an hour and required replacing the source. That report does not establish a fix or predict behavior for other protocols, playlists, or local media (freeze report).
- Record that the source is a network playlist, not a local-file playlist, and note whether the failure happens during a track change or mid-item.
- Compare it with a local-file control in a duplicate scene, using a similar runtime where possible.
- Capture the OBS log and note whether OBS remains responsive when the network source stops.
If the local control keeps playing while the network source freezes, that narrows the reproduction to a different source path; it still does not establish a universal network-stream fix.

Use the comparison to choose the next step
| Test | What to compare | What the result can tell you |
|---|---|---|
| VLC Video Source versus Media Source | Same local file, similar runtime, memory observations, log or crash report | Whether the failure reproduces with both source types in this setup |
| Original file versus re-encoded copy | Same scene and playback conditions | Whether the problem follows the original file in this test |
| Network playlist versus local-file control | Similar runtime and observation of source versus OBS behavior | Whether the observed failure is limited to the network-source test |
These comparisons narrow a particular reproduction; none guarantees stability or identifies a cause without the accompanying logs and setup details.

- OBS closes after hours: save the log and crash report, then reproduce with one source and one file in a duplicate scene. Do not assume this is the same issue as a source that freezes while OBS remains open.
- The source freezes but OBS stays open: record the source type and whether it is local or network-based. Compare a network playlist with a local control rather than applying conclusions from one to the other.
- A particular file triggers the problem: verify that it plays independently, then compare the original with a re-encoded copy under unchanged conditions.
- Memory appears to grow during playback: log what you observe and how long it takes. A historical issue reported rapid growth during FLV playback on macOS 10.15.4/OBS 25.0.8, but that does not show FLV universally causes crashes or prove the same mechanism in another setup (historical issue).
Keep a 24/7 YouTube playlist running without leaving OBS on
If your goal is continuous playback of uploaded videos on a YouTube channel rather than diagnosing an OBS source, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative: upload your videos, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It keeps the playlist running from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos to YouTube; it is not a camera-based live setup.
