Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallOutdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down
One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchStart by checking the selected sound-reactive mode and audio source, then work outward through the signal path. A built-in-microphone fixture, an app-controlled strip, and a computer-to-DMX setup have different controls and failure points; changing hardware before identifying which setup you have can send you in the wrong direction.
First identify how your lights hear the audio
Audio-reactive lighting usually listens through one of several sources: a microphone built into a fixture, a microphone in a control box, a phone microphone, or a computer audio input routed through software. The source determines what to check first.
| Setup | First checks | What can add complexity |
|---|---|---|
| Standalone sound-active fixture | Sound mode, microphone obstruction or placement, and fixture sensitivity | Usually fewer signal-chain components; settings are model-specific |
| App-controlled lights | Audio input enabled, intended microphone selected, gain, and any required network connection | App settings, phone/controller relationship, and network requirements |
| Computer-controlled DMX | Audio input and buffer, routing software, lighting software, interface, DMX cabling, and fixture settings | More software and hardware stages, each of which can affect response |
For instance, ASAHOM’s Studio app says its phone-microphone option requires the phone and controller to be on the same Wi-Fi network. That requirement applies to that setup, not to all music-reactive lights. ASAHOM’s Audio RX guide also notes that response can vary by song and mode.
If lights do not react, check mode and audio input
Standalone fixtures
Confirm the fixture is in sound-active or sound mode rather than a static, automatic, or DMX-controlled mode. Make sure nothing is covering the built-in microphone, then test with music playing near it. Rockville’s instructions for the Stage Panel 336 identify mode, microphone obstruction, and sensitivity as checks; the model’s sensitivity scale runs from 1 to 15, which should not be assumed to match another fixture. See Rockville’s Stage Panel 336 guide.

App-controlled lights
In the app, verify that audio input is enabled and select the microphone you intend to use—such as the control-box microphone or phone microphone. If using a phone source, check the app’s network requirement. If the app sees audio but the lights barely respond, adjust gain gradually rather than immediately turning it to maximum.
Computer and DMX setups
Confirm the audio source is reaching the software that analyzes sound, and that the lighting software is sending control data to the intended DMX interface. Check the complete path: audio input or buffer, any virtual-routing application, lighting software, USB-to-DMX interface, DMX chain, and fixtures. A break or wrong selection at any stage can make otherwise working lights appear unresponsive.

Adjust sensitivity or gain without creating false triggers
Increase sensitivity or gain a little at a time if normal music is not triggering effects. Reduce it if room noise, speech, or handling sounds cause unwanted changes. Higher sensitivity generally lets a sound-active fixture respond to quieter sounds, but the available scale and menu labels vary by product. Rockville documents sound modes and sensitivity adjustment on its Best Strip 60; use the instructions for your own model rather than copying another fixture’s setting. Rockville’s Best Strip 60 guide covers its product-specific controls.
If the lights lag behind the music, trace the audio-to-light path
On a computer-controlled system, apparent delay can enter before DMX transmission: audio buffering, virtual-routing applications, lighting software, or a heavily loaded computer may all contribute. ENTTEC identifies these as possible sources of perceived lag in its computer-to-DMX audio-lighting guide.

- Check the input and routing. Verify that the software is listening to the intended audio source and that any virtual-routing app is sending audio to the right destination.
- Reduce unnecessary stages. Where your setup permits, simplify routing and reduce avoidable buffering, then compare the response.
- Check computer load. Close unnecessary applications and see whether the behavior changes when the computer is less busy.
- Compare another supported input. If the system supports a direct or line input, compare it with the current route to help isolate software routing or microphone pickup.
ENTTEC states that transmitting a full 512-channel DMX frame takes about 23 ms on the wire at 250 kbit/s. This is the transmission time for that frame, not a measurement of total audio-to-light latency; analysis, software, buffering, and fixture response are separate parts of the path. Reactive effects also analyze sound rather than guaranteeing frame-accurate choreography.
If lights flicker, isolate DMX from the fixture
For a DMX-controlled fixture, test whether the flicker continues without a DMX signal. ADJ recommends disconnecting DMX and trying standalone or sound-active mode. If the flicker stops, investigate the DMX chain; if it persists, the fixture itself or its operating conditions may need attention. This test narrows the possibilities but does not identify a failed component by itself.

- Inspect DMX cables and connectors for damage or loose connections.
- Check the chain’s end termination and address conflicts, following the controller and fixture manuals.
- Confirm that each fixture’s DMX address and channel mode match the control plan.
- For linked units, check that DMX OUT feeds the next fixture’s DMX IN, as required by the model’s setup.
ADJ notes that random, non-patterned flickering limited to particular LEDs can indicate an LED or LED-driver fault. If that pattern remains in standalone mode, consult the manufacturer or a qualified repair provider rather than trying to correct it through DMX settings. See ADJ’s LED flicker troubleshooting guidance.

- Check that the fixture or controller has power and that the intended operating mode is selected.
- For a microphone-based fixture, make sure the microphone is unobstructed and test sound response with sensitivity adjusted gradually.
- For an app-controlled setup, confirm audio input is enabled, the correct microphone is selected, and any required phone/controller network relationship is present.
- For DMX, verify the controller configuration, cable path, address, channel mode, and connections against the exact fixture manual.
- If individual LEDs still flicker randomly in standalone mode, seek model-specific service advice.
Keep audio and DMX connections separate: do not plug audio equipment into DMX ports. Use the audio input and DMX connectors specified in the equipment manuals.

Choose the right checks for your setup
A built-in microphone fixture has fewer components to troubleshoot, but its mode, microphone position, and sensitivity matter. App- or computer-controlled lighting can offer more source and routing choices, but adds input selection, network or software settings, interfaces, and—when DMX is involved—a control-signal chain. The useful choice depends on your equipment, the audio source you need, the degree of control you want, and how much delay your use can tolerate.
Because menu labels, channel modes, wiring requirements, and sensitivity scales differ among products, use the manual for the exact fixture and controller. Rockville’s and ADJ’s procedures are model or brand guidance, not universal settings.
