If only distance from closed-app play is missing, troubleshoot Adventure Sync separately: it uses background fitness tracking, not the same live GPS path.
Start by identifying the problem
These symptoms point to different parts of the phone and game. Choose the branch that matches what you see:
- Live GPS drift: Your avatar moves inaccurately or jumps while Pokémon GO is open.
- Location error: The game displays “GPS Signal Lost” or “failed to detect location.”
- Adventure Sync distance: Distance or fitness progress is missing after you close the game.
Niantic warns that “When playing in urban areas with lots of tall buildings, keep in mind that your GPS may drift or jump.” Niantic’s GPS Troubleshooting Guide treats this as a reception issue that can happen in built-up areas.
Fix live GPS drift and location errors
Retest outdoors with a clearer view of the sky
Move away from tall buildings and other obstructions, open Pokémon GO, and wait briefly for the location to settle. Indoor or urban performance alone is not enough to conclude that the phone’s GPS hardware has failed.

Check location permission and connectivity
- Make sure the phone’s system Location Services are on.
- In the phone’s app settings, check that Pokémon GO is allowed to access location. On iOS, use the closest equivalent under Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services; on Android, look under the game’s app permissions. Menu labels can vary by OS version and phone maker.
- Test Wi-Fi and mobile data separately. Switch from one to the other, then check whether the game’s position improves.
Full Wi-Fi or cellular bars do not guarantee a stable connection. Niantic recommends checking the connection and switching network sources when troubleshooting. See Niantic’s GPS troubleshooting steps.
Android: enable Location Accuracy
Android has a device-wide setting called Location Accuracy (also described as Improve Location Accuracy). It can combine GPS with nearby Wi-Fi access points, cellular networks, and device sensors to improve the location estimate. This setting is separate from Pokémon GO’s app-level location permission: check both. Google’s paths are:

- Android 12 and later: Settings > Location > Location Services > Location Accuracy.
- Android 11 and earlier: Settings > Location > Advanced > Location Accuracy.
Phone manufacturers may use different labels or menu paths. Google explains how Location Accuracy works.
Android: resolve “failed to detect location”
If this error persists, check whether a mock-location app is selected in Developer options. Disable the selected mock-location app rather than installing or enabling spoofing tools; Niantic lists a selected mock-location app as a possible cause of the error. Read Niantic’s location-error guidance.

Try game-level troubleshooting if the basics fail
For Android, Niantic’s troubleshooting sequence includes these steps. Try the less disruptive checks before clearing data or reinstalling:
- Update Pokémon GO through the official app store.
- Switch between Wi-Fi and mobile data and retest.
- Use Pokémon GO’s Refresh Game Data option, if available in the game’s settings. Refreshing game data may turn Adventure Sync off, so check its toggle afterward if you use it.
- Set the phone’s date and time to update automatically.
- Clear Pokémon GO’s app cache using the phone’s app settings.
- Check that background data is not restricted for Google Play Services or the Google Play Store.
- Reinstall the official game app as a later step. Before doing so, confirm you know how to sign back into your account. Niantic says game progress is stored online for this reinstall step.

“Adventure Sync isn’t tracking my fitness progress”
Adventure Sync tracks fitness progress while Pokémon GO is closed. It is separate from the live position used to move your avatar around the map, so a problem with one does not necessarily mean the other is broken.
- In Pokémon GO, confirm Adventure Sync is enabled.
- Check that the game has the location permissions it needs for background use on your phone. Exact permission labels vary by platform and OS version.
- Confirm that the phone’s motion or fitness sensors can track steps and distance, and that Pokémon GO is connected to the relevant fitness source.
- On Android, check Google Fit’s connected apps and devices for Pokémon GO. On iPhone, check Pokémon GO under Health > Sources.
- Allow time for syncing: Pokémon Support says it can take several hours. Manually entered fitness data does not count, and battery-saving modes can interfere.

When to investigate a phone-level GPS fault
A map app showing your position does not prove the phone has acquired a GPS signal. Phones can estimate location using several methods, and a map can show an estimate even when satellite reception is unavailable. Google makes this distinction in its guidance for persistent “GPS Signal Lost” notifications in Google Maps.
Test with a charged phone outdoors under a clear sky. If GPS diagnostics still cannot acquire a signal under those conditions, the issue may be at the device level and the phone may need manufacturer support or repair. This is not proof of a Pokémon GO fault or a guaranteed hardware diagnosis; Google notes that repair may be needed when a device cannot get a GPS signal in suitable conditions.
Some phones may disable GPS when battery is low, including when the screen is off or an app is in the background. If the problem occurs specifically in those low-battery conditions, keeping the phone charged may help. A power bank will not fix blocked satellite reception, incorrect permissions, an app fault, or failed hardware. Google’s GPS troubleshooting guidance discusses low-battery behavior.
