If services are available, test the console’s connection, compare Wi-Fi with wired LAN, and restart your PS5 and network equipment before changing router settings. NAT can affect which players you can connect to, but a NAT type or speed-test result alone does not explain every lag problem.
First work out how widespread the problem is
Note whether the trouble affects one game or several online services, whether it began suddenly, and whether other devices on your network are also having problems. These clues help choose what to check next; none identifies the cause on its own.
- One game only: check that game’s service status as well as PSN. The game may have a server-side issue even when other online features work.
- Several games or PSN features: check PlayStation Network status, then investigate the console’s connection and home network.
- Other devices are affected too: the router, modem, Wi-Fi environment, or internet provider may be involved.
Check whether PSN or the game is having an outage
Before changing router settings, check PlayStation Service Status and the affected game’s own status page or official support channel. Sony recommends checking service status when troubleshooting connection errors and checking the game’s website when a game reports that it is offline. The PSN status page is dynamic, so check it when the problem is happening; this guide does not assert a live service state.
If an outage or maintenance is reported, wait and try again later rather than making network changes. If services appear available, continue with the console-side test.

Run the PS5 internet connection test
- On the PS5, open Settings > Network > Test Internet Connection.
- Review the results. If the console reports a connection problem, check that the saved connection uses the intended Wi-Fi network and that its credentials are correct.
- If the test succeeds but a game still lags, treat that as a useful connection check—not proof that the game session, its server, or every part of your route is performing well.
Sony’s WS-114298-5 guidance gives this menu path and also recommends checking PSN and game status. A console connection test does not report the performance of every game server or establish a specific in-game latency or packet-loss cause.
Compare Wi-Fi with a wired connection
If the PS5 is on Wi-Fi
Move the console closer to the router and reduce obstructions between them. Then retry the game and note whether the connection behaves differently. This is a practical way to check whether the wireless link may be contributing to the trouble.

Try LAN if you can
When practical, connect the PS5 to the router with an Ethernet LAN cable and compare the result. Sony recommends trying a wired connection in some PS5 network-error guidance; it is a diagnostic comparison, not a guarantee that lag will disappear. A wired test cannot fix an outage, upstream congestion, or a game-server problem.
To configure it, use Settings > Network > Settings > Set Up Internet Connection > Set Up Wired LAN > Connect. Sony documents this route in its internet connection setup instructions.

Restart the console and network equipment
- Restart the PS5.
- Turn off the router and, where applicable, the modem. Wait at least five minutes before turning the router back on, as Sony specifies in its NW-102468-1 troubleshooting steps.
- Once the network is back, test the PS5 connection and retry the affected game.
Sony also advises updating router firmware according to the router vendor’s instructions in its WS-116520-5 guidance. If the earlier checks do not help, a temporary congestion issue is also possible; Sony’s WS-116439-4 guidance recommends waiting and trying again later when troubleshooting has not resolved the issue.
Understand what NAT can—and cannot—tell you
NAT is relevant to connectivity and the ability to connect with other players, but it is not a direct measure of ping, frame-rate stutter, or server performance. Activision’s Port Forward and NAT FAQ describes Sony’s Type 1, Type 2, and Type 3 labels and explains that restrictive NAT can limit which other players a user can connect to. That is general matchmaking and peer-connectivity context, not a guarantee that every Type 3 connection will lag or that Type 1 is required for normal play.

Sony’s NW-102468-1 troubleshooting specifically advises removing multiple NAT routers. This can be relevant when an ISP gateway/router is connected to a second router. Identify whether your setup has one router or multiple routing devices before changing anything. Sony does not provide a universal configuration procedure for this situation; ask your ISP or router maker for guidance before changing bridge mode, firewall behavior, or port forwarding.

Sony’s setup instructions say PS5 supports IPv6 connections but not IPv6-only networks. If your router is configured as IPv6-only, ask the router vendor for help changing it to use IPv4 as well. The same Sony instructions advise consulting your ISP or network administrator if you are unfamiliar with advanced IP, DNS, MTU, or proxy settings; do not change these at random.

Port forwarding is a conditional troubleshooting step, not a general lag remedy. For PS5 error WS-116520-5, Sony says “If possible” to try opening TCP ports 80, 443, 3478, 3479, and 3480, and UDP ports 3478, 3479, and 49152–65535; it directs users to contact their ISP for details. Those ports are cited for that error guidance, not as a universal recipe for every game or connection problem. Router setup and provider restrictions vary, so get specific advice before changing firewall or port settings.
