Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Start by checking that FFmpeg is using the current server URL and stream key shown in YouTube Live Control Room. Then identify whether the failure is at the connection or RTMPS/TLS stage, during an ongoing write, or after YouTube receives the connection but fails to recognize the media. Those are different problems; an RTMP error alone does not identify a single cause.
First identify where the stream fails
Keep the complete FFmpeg log, your FFmpeg version/build information, and the command that produced the error. Redact the stream key and any other credentials before sharing them. The exact error and the point at which it appears determine which checks are relevant.
- Fails immediately while opening the output: check the destination URL, key, protocol, and whether FFmpeg supports the protocol in use.
- Reports “connection timed out” or “failed to connect to server”: verify the current endpoint and RTMPS support before investigating network reachability.
- Reports an SSL error: check the RTMPS URL and host, then follow YouTube’s port guidance below.
- Connects and writes before stopping: inspect the full write failure and timing; the message alone does not establish whether the source, network route, or remote ingest caused it.
- YouTube receives a connection but shows no preview or reports “no stream is detected”: check the output container, selected audio/video streams, and codecs. This can be a media-acceptance issue rather than a failed RTMP handshake.
Verify the YouTube server URL and stream key
- Open YouTube Live Control Room and find the server URL and stream key for the stream you are setting up.
- Compare both values character for character with the destination configured in FFmpeg. Use the endpoint YouTube currently supplies for that stream; do not assume a remembered URL or reconstruct its application path.
- If the key may be stale or compromised, reset it in Live Control Room and update the value FFmpeg actually uses. YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Treat them as secrets: never publish a live key in logs, issue reports, screenshots, or articles.
YouTube’s guidance for an encoder that will not start also advises copying the stream key from Live Control Room into the encoder. Updating a key in one place will not help if the running FFmpeg command still uses the old value. See YouTube’s encoder troubleshooting steps and its stream-key guidance.
Fix RTMPS SSL errors and connection timeouts
YouTube recommends RTMPS, the TLS/SSL-protected extension of RTMP. The RTMPS URL may not be the URL displayed by default in Live Control Room, so select or retrieve the RTMPS endpoint there and copy that exact endpoint and key to FFmpeg. YouTube’s live encoder settings and connection troubleshooting guidance explain the platform’s setup.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
If FFmpeg reports an SSL error
- Confirm the URL uses the RTMPS protocol and the actual RTMPS server host supplied for your stream.
- If the URL appears correct and the SSL error persists, YouTube advises trying port 443. Preserve the endpoint YouTube supplied rather than substituting a documentation example hostname.
If FFmpeg reports a timeout
Check that the server URL is correct and that your FFmpeg build supports RTMPS. A protocol or endpoint mismatch should be addressed before changing video or audio encoding flags. If the configured endpoint and protocol are correct, use the full FFmpeg error and controlled network diagnostics to investigate reachability; the wording alone does not establish that a particular router, firewall, or cable is at fault.
Check the RTMP URL and FFmpeg output format
FFmpeg documents RTMP as multimedia streaming over TCP/IP. Its URL can include a server, optional port, application, and instance or playpath; its documented default RTMP port is 1935. That default does not override the endpoint or port YouTube provides for the stream. Use the complete destination from Live Control Room instead of guessing URL components. FFmpeg’s protocol documentation shows a publishing example with the FLV muxer: FFmpeg RTMP protocol documentation.

A connection can succeed while YouTube still cannot use the media. The output container, selected video and audio streams, codecs, and encoder settings all matter. In one 2022 FFmpeg-user discussion, a contributor suggested trying FLV after YouTube did not detect reported raw H.264 output; that is a case-specific suggestion, not proof that every current stream must use FLV or that it fixes a connection failure. See the FFmpeg-user discussion.
Likewise, errors about automatic encoder selection or a tee output are not necessarily RTMP connectivity failures. A 2019 mailing-list example attributes a particular tee-command problem to missing codec defaults and audio codec selection. Apply that diagnosis only if your log identifies a similar output or codec setup issue: FFmpeg-user tee-output discussion.

Once connected, compare the stream with YouTube’s encoder settings
Use YouTube’s current encoder settings and bitrates for the stream’s codec, resolution, and frame rate, and monitor stream health in Live Control Room. The current page lists RTMP/RTMPS as protocols; H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 as video codecs; frame rates up to 60 fps; AAC or MP3 audio; CBR bitrate encoding; and a recommended two-second keyframe interval with a maximum of four seconds. Platform settings can change, so check the page when configuring a stream.
For H.264, the page’s recommended bitrate examples include 5 Mbps for 1080p at 30 fps and 17 Mbps for 1080p at 60 fps. These are YouTube’s recommendations for those specific settings, not universal minimum internet-speed requirements. Use the matching resolution and frame-rate row and its separate minimum column rather than applying one figure to every stream.

Handle disconnects during an ongoing stream
If FFmpeg starts streaming and later stops, note when the write fails and preserve the full error output. A timeout during writing indicates that output stalled or failed, but does not by itself say whether the source, local connection, route, or remote ingest was responsible. Diagnose that layer separately from key, protocol, and media-format checks.
FFmpeg’s all-options documentation includes a pattern for continuing real-time processing after a temporary failure and retrying streaming every second. Retry behavior may help an application tolerate interruptions, but it does not repair the underlying link. Confirm that the relevant options and syntax are supported by your installed FFmpeg version before using them: FFmpeg all-options documentation.
