If Total War: Warhammer III mods are missing, fail to activate, crash the game, or behave incompatibly, first identify where the problem occurs: the launcher, the mod download, compatibility with the current game version, or an interaction between active mods. Record your platform and game version, confirm the mod is present locally, then test with mods disabled before changing files or settings.
First, identify what is failing
“Mods not working” can describe several different problems. The fix depends on whether a mod is missing from the launcher, visible but unavailable, causing a crash, or loading without the expected effect.
- Not listed: Check the selected launcher, subscription or download state, and whether you are looking at the intended mod.
- Listed but not active: Check its activation state and whether the launcher has a local copy.
- Crash at startup or when loading a campaign: Test with mods disabled, then reintroduce them in small groups.
- Game runs but a feature behaves incorrectly: Check recent game or mod updates and investigate interactions or ordering.
Before changing anything, note your store or platform (Steam, Epic, or Windows Store/Game Pass), the game version, which launcher you use, the affected mod names or Workshop IDs, and when the issue began. A problem after an update is useful evidence, but it does not by itself show that a mod is outdated.
Check the launcher and confirm the mod is downloaded
Creative Assembly has documented three ways to launch on Steam: the original launcher, a newer Mod Manager offered as an Early Access option, and launching the game directly. The newer manager is a Steam-specific option in the cited announcement; do not assume it is available on Epic or Windows Store/Game Pass. If you use the newer manager, check its subscription and local-version indicators. Its April 28, 2026 update added search by mod title, pack filename, or Steam Workshop ID, and improved the display of subscription and local-version information. Search by Workshop ID when names are similar. The update also addressed confusing selections among entries with the same pack name or checksum, so verify the specific entry rather than relying on a familiar-looking name alone. If a mod is subscribed to but has no corresponding local version, let its download finish and check again before treating the symptom as a gameplay conflict. Check whether a game or mod update changed compatibility
A mod that worked previously may stop working when the game changes, or when the mod itself changes. SEGA’s troubleshooting guidance identifies an outdated mod as one possible reason the game may not function and recommends deactivating or removing mods as a test. Creative Assembly’s March 26, 2025 Hotfix 6.1.1 notes say that user-generated mods may have compatibility issues with new game updates. The same notes record a specific fix for a crash involving mod files with uppercase characters in their names. That is a historical, version-specific example—not evidence that uppercase filenames are a general cause of current failures. Compare the date the problem began with the game’s update history and the mod’s latest update information. Avoid assuming that every game update breaks mods or that a mod is abandoned unless its author says so.
Isolate a failing mod or combination safely
Use reversible tests to distinguish a mod-related problem from a base-game problem. If your launcher supports profiles, save or export your current setup before changing it. Creative Assembly has documented profile saving and sharing for the newer Mod Manager; the exact options depend on the launcher you use.

- Record the current setup. Write down active mods and their order, or save a profile where possible.
- Deactivate all mods. Launch the game and try to reproduce the same crash or symptom. SEGA recommends deactivating or deleting mods as a troubleshooting test; deactivation is the safer first step when available.
- If the base game works, restore a small group. Activate a few mods at a time and repeat the same action that previously failed.
- Narrow down the group that brings the problem back. Test its members separately, keeping the game version and other conditions unchanged as much as possible.
- Check ordering only when the symptom points that way. The newer Mod Manager supports manual ordering in Advanced settings, but no single order is guaranteed for every mod combination.
This staged approach is a practical way to apply the official recommendation to test with mods deactivated; it is not a published compatibility matrix. Official manager notes describe tools and features, not guaranteed combinations for arbitrary mods.

For persistent problems, SEGA recommends backing up the preferences and cache files, then moving the game’s folder from %AppData%RoamingThe Creative Assembly to test for corrupt or incorrect cached settings. Close the game first. Keep the moved folder intact so you can restore it if this test does not help; do not delete your backup as part of the test. Because this changes local settings, do it after testing mods rather than as the first response to a missing Workshop item.
Collect useful diagnostics if the problem persists
When asking Creative Assembly support for help, include a concise description and the steps you have already tried. Its support post, last edited April 5, 2022, asks for DXDIAG and a crash minidump where applicable, and lists different scripts folders by store platform. These paths and support workflows are from that older post and may change; check current official support instructions before relying on them. Creative Assembly support post

Include your platform/store, exact game version, launcher, mod names or Workshop IDs, active order, symptom, and whether the base game works with mods disabled. Attach DXDIAG and a crash minidump if available and requested by the current support instructions. This lets support distinguish a download or launcher issue from a failure that appears only with a particular mod setup.
