How to Turn a YouTube Live Replay Into an Always-On Channel

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You can rebroadcast a YouTube Live replay by sending the video file through an encoder to a new YouTube Live stream, then configuring the encoder to loop or restart the file. YouTube does not provide a native one-click option that turns an archived replay into an always-on channel. Before you begin, confirm the replay is available, clear the rights for the video and audio, and decide how you will keep the encoder running and monitor it.

Before you start: find the replay and check its limits

In YouTube Studio, open Content > Live and locate the past event. YouTube can automatically archive streams that run for less than 12 hours; streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. If you have a local recording, keep it as a backup rather than relying only on the YouTube archive. See YouTube’s guidance on archiving live streams.

Make sure the replay you plan to rebroadcast is a usable source file for your encoder. If you cannot download or otherwise provide the recording as a file, use a source you have the right to access and rebroadcast; do not assume that a public replay is automatically available for use as an encoder input.

Clear the rights before rebroadcasting

Confirm that you have the necessary rights for the rebroadcast itself, including rights to the video, music, and other audio. YouTube’s live-stream terms require the provider to have the rights needed for worldwide use of Live Content, including applicable music rights. A license or permission for the original event may not necessarily cover a new broadcast. Read the YouTube Terms of Service and check the permissions that apply to your material.

YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. If a match is not resolved, the live stream may be interrupted or terminated; an archived stream may also receive a Content ID claim after it ends. Review YouTube’s copyright guidance for live streams and resolve any rights questions before scheduling a long-running broadcast.

DIY method: rebroadcast the replay through an encoder

  1. Create or schedule a new live stream. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and choose the encoder workflow. Create a new stream or schedule it for a later time. Scheduling can let viewers set reminders and lets you reuse stream settings. Follow YouTube’s instructions for creating a live stream with an encoder.
  2. Copy the connection details. In the Live Control Room, copy the stream URL and stream key into the matching fields in your encoder. Treat the key as a password: anyone who gets it may be able to send a feed to your stream. YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” See Manage live stream settings. If the key is exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update your encoder.
  3. Set the replay as the video source. Select the recording in your encoder and configure its playback to loop or restart after it reaches the end. The precise control varies by encoder. This loop is an encoder-side setup, not a YouTube feature, and YouTube does not promise uninterrupted operation simply because a file is set to repeat.
  4. Preview before going live. Wait for the encoder feed to appear in the Live Control Room. Check picture, sound, and playback position there before starting the broadcast. YouTube’s live-streaming tips recommend monitoring stream quality and checking that a local archive is intact.
  5. Start the stream and monitor it. Start sending the encoder output, confirm the live status in Studio, and continue checking audio and video. Keep the source file and, where available, a local archive safe. If you plan to run the stream continuously, test the loop and restart behavior before relying on it for an extended broadcast.

Choose an encoder setup that fits how you will operate it

YouTube describes both software encoders and hardware encoders. A software encoder is the accessible option if you can leave a computer running and monitor it; a hardware encoder can suit a more specialized production setup. The key practical differences are whether the setup can loop the source, recover after a dropped connection, provide useful monitoring, and operate locally or remotely. YouTube’s documentation does not rank encoder products or publish comparative reliability tests, so test the exact setup you intend to use.

What to expect from the replay archive and monetization

Do not assume that the new broadcast will create a reliable YouTube archive if it runs beyond 12 hours: YouTube warns that streams longer than that may not be captured. Retain a local recording when the archive matters.

YouTube’s monetization policies apply to live streams and say content should be original and “authentic.” The July 15, 2025 policy update renamed “repetitious content” as “inauthentic content” and clarified that repetitive or mass-produced material may be ineligible. A channel that repeatedly broadcasts only one event replay may raise a monetization concern; the policy does not decide this exact scenario, so eligibility is uncertain. Review YouTube channel monetization policies and do not treat permission to rebroadcast as a guarantee of monetization.
