To stop hearing your own voice through a Turtle Beach Stealth 600 Gen 2, use the control for your exact model: turn down Variable Mic Monitoring on the PlayStation version, or set Mic Monitor to minimum in Turtle Beach Audio Hub for the Xbox and USB Xbox versions. Keep the microphone lowered and unmuted so you can still talk in party or game chat. Gen 2 MAX is a separate model and needs its own instructions.

Quick answer: PlayStation model: turn the headset’s Variable Mic Monitoring control fully down. Xbox or USB Xbox model: connect the headset to a Windows PC or Mac, open Turtle Beach Audio Hub, and move Mic Monitor to its minimum setting. For Gen 2 MAX, use the MAX-specific instructions.

Identify your Stealth 600 Gen 2 first

  • PlayStation model: Designed for PS4 and PS5, and uses a wireless USB transmitter. Its quick-start guide identifies a dedicated Variable Mic Monitoring control. See Turtle Beach’s PlayStation guide.
  • Xbox model: Designed for Xbox consoles and compatible Windows PCs using the relevant Xbox Wireless connection method. On PC, not every computer has built-in Xbox Wireless; some require an Xbox Wireless Adapter. Check Turtle Beach’s PC compatibility guidance.
  • USB for Xbox model: Uses a USB transmitter and may have different controls from the original Xbox Wireless model. Use Audio Hub for Mic Monitor adjustment.
  • Gen 2 MAX: This is a different model, not a synonym for the standard Gen 2. Follow its separate mic-monitoring instructions.

Mic monitoring, also called sidetone, is the headset playing your microphone input back into your ears. It helps you hear yourself and avoid shouting through closed-back headphones. It is not microphone sensitivity, muting, party-chat volume, game/chat balance, game voice-chat settings, or an echo heard by other players.

Turn off mic monitoring on the PlayStation model

  1. Turn on the headset and locate the control labeled Variable Mic Monitoring. On most PlayStation versions, this is the lower dial; confirm you have not mistaken it for the master-volume control.
  2. Turn the monitoring control all the way down.
  3. Keep the microphone lowered and unmuted, then speak normally to check whether you still hear your voice.

The PlayStation quick-start guide identifies the Variable Mic Monitoring control. If your hardware revision’s controls are unclear or the dial does not respond, consult the guide’s control diagram before changing other settings. Turtle Beach also documents Audio Hub for firmware updates on Windows or Mac, which may be worth trying if the control is unresponsive. PlayStation quick-start guide.

Turn off mic monitoring on the Xbox or USB Xbox model

Turtle Beach’s documented adjustment for these Xbox variants is the Mic Monitor slider in Audio Hub. Xbox audio menus can vary by console software and headset configuration, so do not assume a console voice setting will disable the headset’s own sidetone.

  1. Install Turtle Beach Audio Hub on a Windows PC or Mac.
  2. Connect the headset directly to the computer with its USB cable. Use a data-capable cable; a charge-only cable may power the headset without allowing Audio Hub to communicate with it.
  3. Open Audio Hub and wait for it to detect the headset.
  4. Find Mic Monitor and move its slider completely to the minimum/off position.
  5. If a firmware update is offered, you can apply it while the headset is connected. Do not disconnect or power off the headset during an update.
  6. Close Audio Hub, disconnect the headset, and reconnect it to the Xbox.
  7. Test the microphone in a party or game chat while speaking normally.

Turtle Beach describes the slider as controlling how loudly you hear your own voice and recommends Audio Hub for firmware and control customization. Xbox Audio Hub instructions. Turtle Beach Support has also identified Audio Hub as the adjustment method for the USB Xbox model. Support answer reproduced on Best Buy.

Using the Xbox model on a Windows PC

The Xbox version may need built-in Xbox Wireless or an Xbox Wireless Adapter to connect to a PC; adapter availability depends on the computer and is not itself a mic-monitoring fix. Once connected, check both Windows audio devices: select the Stealth 600 as the playback/output device and as the recording/input device if you want to use it for game audio and chat. Turtle Beach’s setup guidance covers those Windows selections and Xbox Wireless compatibility. PC compatibility and setup.

Confirm the setting worked

  • With the mic down and unmuted, speak in a console party or game chat. You should be able to communicate without hearing the headset feed your voice back.
  • If you still hear yourself, flip the microphone up to mute it briefly, then speak or tap near it. If the sound stops only when muted, the sound is tied to microphone input or monitoring; continue with the checks below.
  • Test in a party and in the game separately. If possible, compare with another supported device to see whether the sound follows the headset or only occurs in one app or console setup.

If you still hear your voice

Check whether it is sidetone or chat playback

Audio from Xbox party chat, PlayStation, Discord, or a particular game can play your voice back independently of the headset’s Mic Monitor setting. Temporarily leave the party or disable the game/app’s voice playback or monitoring option, then test again. Do not confuse your own voice returning to your ears with other players reporting that they hear an echo.

Recheck the model and control

Make sure you are following the PlayStation or Xbox instructions that match the headset, and that a Gen 2 MAX is not being treated as a standard Gen 2. On the PlayStation version, verify that you turned down Variable Mic Monitoring rather than master volume. A physical dial can also be moved again after setup.

Audio Hub does not detect the headset or the change does not take

  1. Use a USB cable that supports data transfer.
  2. Connect directly to the computer rather than through a USB hub, and try another USB port.
  3. Power the headset off and back on, then close and reopen Audio Hub.
  4. Apply an available firmware update, following the on-screen process without interrupting it.
  5. Restart the computer, reconnect the headset, and check the Mic Monitor slider again.

Turtle Beach provides Audio Hub for Windows and Mac and recommends keeping headset firmware current. If the headset remains undetected or unresponsive after these checks, contact Turtle Beach Support rather than repeatedly interrupting firmware updates.

Mic monitoring versus common microphone problems

What you notice Likely cause First check
You hear your own voice Mic monitoring/sidetone or voice playback from an app Headset control or Audio Hub; then test outside the party or game
Other players hear an echo Chat playback or microphone pickup, rather than necessarily your sidetone Party/game audio and microphone placement
Nobody hears you Mic is muted or the wrong input device is selected Mic position and console or Windows input selection
Monitoring returns after reconnecting The setting may not have taken effect, or a firmware/communication issue may be present Reapply the Audio Hub setting and check firmware

Does flipping the mic up turn off mic monitoring?

Flipping the microphone up mutes it on the standard PlayStation and Xbox Gen 2 models, but muting is not the same as turning off the monitoring setting. It is useful as a brief diagnostic test; lower Variable Mic Monitoring or Mic Monitor to stop sidetone while leaving the mic available for chat. Xbox quick-start guide.

Can you turn it off in Xbox settings or without a computer?

For the headset’s own sidetone, use its hardware control or Audio Hub according to the variant. Xbox menus may expose monitoring controls in some configurations, but they are not a dependable universal adjustment across Stealth 600 Gen 2 versions. For the PlayStation model, the headset’s physical Variable Mic Monitoring control usually means no computer is needed. For Xbox and USB Xbox models, Audio Hub on Windows or Mac is the dependable documented method; if a physical control is not available or does not work, do not assume there is a console-only replacement.

Is Gen 2 MAX the same as the standard Gen 2?

No. The MAX has different control behavior and should be set up using its own model-specific steps. Use Turtle Beach’s Gen 2 MAX mic-monitoring guide rather than assuming the standard Xbox or PlayStation directions apply.
