On an original Nintendo Switch, Switch Lite, or Switch – OLED Model, go to System Settings → Parental Controls → Change Settings, enter the parental-controls PIN, press X for Delete Settings, then select OK. This removes the console’s parental-controls settings and PIN; it is not a factory reset. If you only need to approve one game or allow more time today, adjust that limit instead of deleting the setup.
These instructions are for the original Nintendo Switch family: Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch Lite, and Nintendo Switch – OLED Model. Parental controls are set for the console, not separately for each user, so the same system restrictions apply to everyone who uses it. Nintendo’s setup and removal instructions cover these models.
Before proceeding, decide what you mean by “turn off”: deleting the console setup, temporarily relaxing a limit, changing one restriction, or removing app management are different actions. If the issue is an eShop or supervised-account restriction, that may be controlled through a Nintendo Account family group rather than the console settings.

Delete the console’s parental controls when you know the PIN
- From the HOME Menu, open System Settings.
- Scroll down and select Parental Controls.
- Select Change Settings.
- Enter the parental-controls PIN.
- Press the X Button to choose Delete Settings.
- Select OK to confirm.
This deletes the console’s parental-controls configuration and PIN. It does not factory-reset the Switch or delete games, users, screenshots, downloads, Nintendo Accounts, or save data; the action removes parental-controls settings, not console content.

If the console is linked to the smartphone app
Check System Settings → Parental Controls. Labels such as Sync with Nintendo Switch Parental Controls App and Unregister App indicate an app-linked console. If you see Parental Controls Settings or the ordinary Change Settings option instead, it is not currently linked to the app. Labels can vary with region, language, and software revision.
On a linked console, the PIN is managed in the Nintendo Switch Parental Controls app. Open the app, select Parental Controls, then Parental-Controls PIN. The app displays the current PIN; select Change to set a new one. Nintendo describes the PIN as 4–8 digits. Save the new PIN and connect the Switch online so app changes can take effect.

To remove app management completely, use Unregister App on the console and enter its PIN. Nintendo’s removal guidance treats unlinking as the complete-removal step for app-linked controls; simply changing a limit in the app is not the same as removing the setup. Do not keep guessing: six incorrect PIN entries within 30 minutes trigger a 30-minute block on further attempts. The console displays a countdown. If you do not know the PIN, follow Nintendo’s recovery process rather than trying unofficial “master PIN” generators or reset codes.

- Open the red Parental Controls icon at the top of the HOME Menu.
- Enter an incorrect four-digit PIN six times until the message says the PIN was entered incorrectly too many times.
- Press + or − to open Help, then scroll to Forgot PIN.
- Record the displayed Inquiry Number. Stay on that screen: the number changes if you leave and reopen it.
- Use Nintendo’s official PIN-reset service, which requires an email address. If you do not have one, contact Nintendo Support.
After resetting the PIN, use it to delete the settings or unregister the app as appropriate. For a second-hand console, ask the seller or authorized parent or guardian for the PIN first; use Nintendo’s official recovery route if it cannot be obtained.
Keep controls but change only what is causing the problem
If you know the PIN and want to retain some restrictions, go to System Settings → Parental Controls → Change Settings, enter the PIN, then choose Change Settings again if prompted. Select Restriction Level and choose an age preset or Custom Settings to adjust the relevant limits, such as software ratings or communication features.

The smartphone app offers additional management, including playtime limits, gameplay history, and an allow list for selected games. An allowed game can be played without entering the parental-controls PIN, but it remains subject to daily playtime limits.

For a one-day exception, the app can extend playtime by 5, 15, or 30 minutes, or one hour, or turn off the limit for that day. You can also review Suspend Play When Time’s Up: depending on that setting, software either stops when the limit is reached or displays a warning. When both a daily playtime limit and bedtime restriction are enabled, whichever is reached first controls access. App changes take effect when the Switch connects online. If eShop or account restrictions remain
Deleting console parental controls does not necessarily remove restrictions attached to a supervised Nintendo Account. Nintendo Account family-group settings can separately manage eShop spending and content visibility, friend-suggestion settings, and other supervised-account limits. If the console no longer shows its parental-controls PIN prompt but an eShop purchase or account feature is still blocked, review the relevant family-group settings rather than repeating the console deletion steps.
Quick troubleshooting

Switch 2 is different
If your console is a Nintendo Switch 2, do not rely on the menu path above. Nintendo provides a separate Switch 2 parental-controls guide, with different wording for settings.
Only a parent, guardian, or authorized console owner should remove these protections. If you are unsure whether the restriction is console-, app-, or account-managed, identify where the prompt appears before deleting settings.
