Yes, you can use a USB-C iPad as a portable screen for a Nintendo Switch, PlayStation, Xbox, Steam Deck, or another HDMI source—but not by plugging HDMI directly into the tablet. You need a UVC-compatible HDMI capture card, a USB-C connection, and an iPad app such as Orion.
The working chain is: console HDMI output → HDMI capture card → USB-C iPad → monitor app. It can be useful for travel and casual gaming, but it is not a native HDMI input and should not be treated as a zero-latency replacement for a gaming monitor.
What iPadOS 18 changed—and what it did not
The underlying capability arrived with iPadOS 17’s support for external USB Video Class (UVC) devices. iPadOS 18 continued to support the workflow demonstrated in 2024; it did not add a built-in HDMI input mode.

This is different from Apple’s normal USB-C display support, which is primarily for sending video from an iPad to an external display. Apple does not certify every retail capture card as an iPad HDMI-input accessory.
What you need
- USB-C iPad: Use an iPad running iPadOS 17 or later with a USB-C port. Examples include the 10th-generation iPad, sixth-generation iPad mini, M1 iPad Air or newer, and 2018-or-newer iPad Pro. USB-C alone is not a complete compatibility guarantee.
- UVC-compatible HDMI capture card: It must have HDMI input and expose the signal as a USB Video Class video source. “HDMI capture” or “4K capture” on a product page does not automatically mean iPad compatibility.
- HDMI cable: Connect the console or other source to the capture card’s HDMI input.
- Monitor app: The original demonstration uses Orion, which lists USB-C iPad and iPadOS 17-or-later requirements. Other UVC-compatible apps may work, but their support and controls vary.
- Optional powered USB-C hub: Use one if you need to charge the iPad while the capture card is attached. The hub must support adequate USB data bandwidth, not just charging.
- Optional headphones: The app may route capture-card audio to the iPad speakers or headphones. Wired audio is generally a safer choice when wireless delay is noticeable.
Check compatibility before buying

USB-C iPads do not all have identical USB implementations. Apple’s model-specific display documentation illustrates these differences: some models support higher external-display modes than others. Those output specifications are not automatically capture-input limits, but they are a reminder not to promise native 4K60 capture for every iPad.
Also check whether the capture card requires USB 3-class bandwidth. A USB 2-limited iPad connection, hub, adapter, or cable can cause failure or force a lower-quality feed.
How to connect the iPad display
Basic setup
- Update the iPad to a supported iPadOS release.
- Install Orion or another app that explicitly supports UVC video sources.
- Connect the console’s HDMI output to the capture card’s HDMI input.
- Connect the capture card’s USB output to the iPad’s USB-C port.
- Turn on the console.
- Open the monitor app and approve camera or external-video permission if requested.
- Select or activate the connected UVC source.
- Confirm that the console image appears, then adjust aspect ratio, scaling, brightness, and audio controls available in the app.
For a Nintendo Switch, the dock or another appropriate HDMI-output arrangement is required. A Steam Deck or similar handheld PC may need a USB-C dock or HDMI adapter before it can feed the capture card.

If the first connection fails
- Turn off the console and disconnect the capture card from the iPad.
- Reconnect HDMI from the console to the capture card.
- Reconnect the capture card to the iPad.
- Open the monitor app.
- Turn on the console and wait for the HDMI handshake to complete.
This reconnection order can help when the console and capture card have negotiated an unsupported resolution or refresh rate.
What performance should you expect?
Resolution and refresh rate
Separate these four specifications:
- The console’s output resolution and refresh rate.
- The capture card’s HDMI input specification.
- The USB bandwidth available to the iPad.
- The resolution the app actually displays or upscales.
A card may pass 4K to a television while sending a lower-resolution USB preview. It may advertise 4K capture but require USB 3, a particular operating system, or proprietary software.
1080p is the sensible baseline unless the entire chain has been verified. Orion’s listing describes its Pro feature as an AI 4K upscaler; that does not prove the iPad is receiving native 4K video. Upscaling an HD feed is not the same as native 4K60 capture.

Do not describe this setup as having “zero latency.” The signal passes through the console, capture hardware, USB transfer, app processing, scaling, and display composition. Bluetooth audio can add another delay.

The result may feel responsive enough for casual, single-player, and many living-room games, but it is not technically equivalent to a direct HDMI monitor. Competitive players who depend on consistently low input latency should use a dedicated portable monitor instead.
Audio
In the original Orion demonstration, audio played through the iPad speakers and could also be routed to Bluetooth headphones. That behavior depends on the capture card, app, and iPadOS.
If video works but sound does not:
- Confirm the console is sending audio over HDMI.
- Check the app’s audio-monitoring controls.
- Test the iPad speakers before pairing Bluetooth headphones.
- Set the console to ordinary stereo PCM instead of surround or an unusual audio format.
- Disconnect other USB audio devices.
- Try another UVC-compatible app or test the capture card on a computer.
Aspect ratio, HDR, and protected content
Most consoles output 16:9 video, while iPads use taller display shapes. The app may show black bars, crop the image, or offer fit and fill modes.

HDCP can also block protected content. A game or console menu may display normally while streaming-video apps, Blu-ray content, or another protected source remains unavailable. Do not assume every HDMI signal can be captured.
Power and portability
The setup is portable, but it is not realistically a one-cable solution. A travel kit may include the iPad, console, console power supply or battery, capture card, HDMI cable, USB-C cable, charger or powered hub, headphones, and a stand or case.
The capture card draws power from the iPad, while the iPad is also decoding and displaying video. A powered hub can make longer sessions more practical by charging the tablet at the same time. If the iPad becomes hot or drains quickly, reduce brightness, lower the preview resolution if the app allows it, remove unnecessary hubs, and use a stronger power source.

Troubleshooting guide
“No signal”
- Make sure HDMI is connected to the capture card’s input, not its output.
- Turn on the console and verify that it works with a normal television or monitor.
- Confirm the card is UVC-compatible and the app has permission to access it.
- Use a data-capable USB cable.
- Check power and USB bandwidth.
- Try 1080p60, then reconnect the card and restart the app.
- Power-cycle the console and capture card.
Black screen
Common causes include HDCP, an unsupported resolution or refresh rate, a failed HDMI handshake, a defective cable, insufficient power, or a USB 2 bottleneck. Disable HDR, set the console to 1080p60, use another HDMI cable, and reconnect the devices in the troubleshooting order above.

The card works on a Mac or PC but not the iPad
That does not establish iPad compatibility. Some capture cards depend on desktop drivers or proprietary applications. For example, Elgato’s iPad compatibility documentation identifies particular supported devices, including the HD60 S+ and Cam Link 4K; compatibility should not be inferred for every Elgato model.
Video stutters or disconnects
Suspect insufficient USB bandwidth, a slow hub, an unreliable cable, heat, or inadequate power. Connect the card directly to the iPad, remove other USB devices, try a shorter or faster cable, and test at a lower resolution.
Do not buy the wrong Apple adapter
Apple’s USB-C Digital AV Multiport Adapter is intended to connect an iPad to an HDMI display. It does not accept HDMI from a console and turn the iPad into a monitor. For HDMI input, the capture-card method is required.
Capture-card choices and trade-offs
- Budget: A generic USB-C UVC HDMI dongle is often sufficient for 1080p casual gaming, but specifications can be unreliable. Check UVC support, USB speed, embedded audio, heat, latency, and the return policy—not merely a “4K” label.
- Branded option: Elgato Cam Link 4K is a better-documented HDMI capture device, but it costs more and still requires confirmation of the exact iPad, app, resolution, and USB setup.
- Gaming capture hardware: Elgato Game Capture HD60 X offers gaming-oriented HDMI input and output, but a modern capture card is not automatically compatible with every iPad app.
- App: Orion offers a free route for supported use cases and paid features such as brightness controls, AI 4K upscaling, and CRT-style effects. Its official website and U.S. App Store listing show different one-time-purchase price signals, so check the current storefront before buying.

Is the iPad setup worth it?
It is a clever and practical solution if you already own a USB-C iPad and want a travel display without buying another screen. It is most suitable for casual gaming, backup-TV use, and situations where portability matters more than perfect latency.
Choose a dedicated portable HDMI monitor if you want direct HDMI input, fewer compatibility variables, native monitor behavior, or the most predictable response for competitive games.
