The fastest way to uninstall a Steam game on Steam Deck is Steam button > Library > select the game > gear/options > Manage > Uninstall. Use Steam > Settings > Storage when you need to choose between internal storage and a microSD card, or switch to Desktop Mode if Gaming Mode fails.
Uninstalling removes the game’s local installation; it does not remove the title from your Steam account. Before starting, make sure important saves have synchronized or back them up manually.
Before uninstalling a game
- Exit the game.
- Finish or cancel active downloads, updates, and file validation.
- Connect the Steam Deck to the internet and allow Steam Cloud synchronization to finish.
- Check whether the game is installed on internal storage or a microSD card.
For a supported game, open its Properties, select General, and check the Steam Cloud setting. Steam Cloud can synchronize saves, settings, profile statistics, and other user-specific data, but developers choose which files are included. Steam’s support documentation also warns that Cloud does not guarantee recovery of lost data. See Valve’s Steam Cloud information and Valve’s Steam Cloud troubleshooting guidance.
Make a manual backup from Desktop Mode if the game does not support Steam Cloud, Cloud is disabled, you recently played offline, saves are stored in an unusual location, or the title uses a third-party launcher. This is especially important for non-Steam games.

Method 1: Uninstall from the Library in Gaming Mode
Best for: quickly removing one normally installed Steam game.
- Press the Steam button.
- Open Library.
- Highlight or open the game you want to remove.
- On the game page, select the gear/options button.
- Choose Manage.
- Select Uninstall and confirm.
Steam Client labels and menu placement can change, so you may see the same controls inside an options menu rather than as a visible text button. Follow the labels shown on your Deck instead of relying on a permanent controller shortcut.
When the process finishes, the game should remain in your Library with an Install option rather than a Launch option. Your Steam ownership is unchanged.

- Press the Steam button.
- Choose Settings.
- Open Storage.
- Select the internal drive or microSD card containing the game.
- Highlight the game.
- Choose the on-screen Uninstall or Delete command.
- Confirm the removal. If your layout shows an X button for deletion, use the button legend displayed on your device.
Valve documents Steam > Settings > Storage as the place to manage Steam Deck storage and connected storage. This view separates storage devices, making it useful when the internal drive is full or you are unsure where a game is installed.
Afterward, the title should disappear from that drive’s installed-game list and the available-space figure should increase once Steam recalculates storage. The recovered amount may not exactly match the game’s displayed download size.
Method 3: Uninstall from Desktop Mode
Best for: an uninstall that hangs, fails, or displays an unclear error in Gaming Mode.
- Press the Steam button.
- Choose Power.
- Select Switch to Desktop.
- Open the desktop Steam client.
- Open Library.
- Right-click the game, or open its management menu.
- Choose Manage > Uninstall.
- Confirm and wait for the process to finish.
Return to Gaming Mode using the desktop shortcut or Steam’s power menu. Valve documents the route to Desktop Mode in its Steam Deck troubleshooting guide. Desktop Mode provides the conventional PC Steam client and may expose an error dialog that is less obvious in Gaming Mode. Community reports describe it as a useful fallback, but it is not a guaranteed fix.

What uninstalling removes—and what it does not

For that reason, “uninstall” should be understood as remove the local installation, not “erase every trace of the game.” Avoid deleting arbitrary hidden Linux folders: a Proton, userdata, shader, or compatibility directory may contain data used by other games or your saves.
If the game will not uninstall

If a title reappears from a microSD card, community reports describe cases involving storage detection or a problematic card. That is anecdotal troubleshooting evidence, not a universal diagnosis. Do not remove the card while Steam is writing to it.

A non-Steam shortcut may not provide the normal Steam Manage > Uninstall command. Its files may be located in a manually chosen folder, inside a launcher’s installation directory, or in Proton compatibility data. Switch to Desktop Mode, identify the exact installation location and launcher involved, and back up saves before removing anything.

microSD storage cautions
Valve says Steam Deck microSD cards must be formatted before use and supports UHS-I Class 3 or better cards. UHS-II and UHS-III cards may work, but the Deck does not use their higher transfer speeds. See Valve’s storage guidance.
Formatting is not another uninstall method: it erases the card’s contents. Back up important games, saves, and other files before formatting, and never remove the card while Steam is writing to it.
How to reinstall the game later
Open the game in your Steam Library and choose Install. Select the desired storage device when Steam asks where to install it. Uninstalling normally leaves the game available to download again as long as you still own it or otherwise have access to it. If Steam Cloud is supported and synchronization completed, Steam may restore the files the game synchronizes; otherwise, restore your manual backup or use the game’s own account and launcher recovery process.

- Open Steam > Settings > Storage.
- Select the drive from which you removed the game.
- Wait for the storage totals and installed-game list to refresh.
- Confirm the title shows Install, not Launch.
- If the total is still incorrect, restart Steam; reboot the Deck if necessary.
The remaining space may include shaders, Proton compatibility data, launcher files, mods, or other content. Use a disk-usage tool in Desktop Mode only if you understand exactly what you are deleting.
