To unlock the Basement in Blue Prince, get the Basement Key from the Antechamber, then use it on a basement door reached either from the Foundation elevator or from the drained Fountain passage. The key permanently unlocks the door and is not consumed.
Spoiler warning: This guide reveals the Basement Key’s location and the entrances to the Basement. It does not solve the later cart puzzle or give the full route to Room 46.

Get the Basement Key in the Antechamber
- Reach the Antechamber. The Basement Key appears on a pedestal in the center. The room’s door must first be opened; routes listed by PC Gamer’s Blue Prince guide, published April 11, 2025, include the Great Hall, Secret Garden, and Greenhouse. The community wiki says the key appears when you first enter the Antechamber each day, subject to its same-day spawn condition: Antechamber details.
- Take the key from the pedestal. It is a special key used for basement doors, according to the community wiki’s key reference.
Choose an entrance and unlock its door
The cited guide describes two practical ways to reach a basement door. Both require the Basement Key; the Fountain route also requires draining the water completely.
Foundation elevator
Use this route if you can reach the Foundation elevator and its bottom door. The community wiki says the elevator starts inside the Foundation each day and can travel down and back up. Calling it down from the Basement requires activating its panel with a Keycard; the wiki also describes a Security and Utility Closet workaround for the card requirement. Drained Fountain passage
- Draft the Pump Room and use it to drain the Fountain.
- Go to the bottom of the Fountain and use the Basement Key on the ornate door.
The passage is blocked unless the Fountain’s water level is at zero; partially draining it is not enough, according to the community wiki’s Fountain page. The Foundation elevator and drained Fountain routes are also covered in PC Gamer’s guide.
What happens after you use the key?
Using the Basement Key permanently unlocks the basement door, and the key is not consumed. You can return through that door on later days without repeating that unlock, according to the community wiki.

If you want to continue beyond Basement access, the community wiki describes a breakable wall at the back of the Basement that a Power Hammer can open toward the Sealed Entrance. Reaching Room 46 is a much larger, spoiler-heavy objective involving the Underground, a minecart, the Inner Sanctum, and a north lever; the extended Room 46 walkthrough covers that route.
