To unlock Magick Archer in Dragon’s Dogma 2, reach Agamen Volcanic Island, start and complete Put a Spring in Thy Step with Gautstafr, and escort him to Geyser Hamlet’s hot springs. His wife, Cliodhna, then grants the vocation and teaches the Maister skill Martyr’s Bolt.
What you need to know first
- Magick Archer is an Arisen-only vocation. You cannot assign it to a standard Pawn.
- The required quest is Put a Spring in Thy Step.
- The quest begins near the exit of Drabnir’s Grotto on Agamen Volcanic Island.
- The reward encounter also provides the Maister teaching for Martyr’s Bolt. Some reward lists call its teaching scroll Spellbow’s Paradox.
The available quest guidance does not establish a reliable universal level recommendation. Prepare for the hazards of the southern volcanic region and the escort rather than relying on a fixed level threshold.
How to start Put a Spring in Thy Step
-
Travel to Agamen Volcanic Island
Make your way to the southern volcanic region. A commonly described approach is through Drabnir’s Grotto after reaching the Battahl and Volcanic Island area.
-
Find Gautstafr near the grotto’s exit
After emerging from Drabnir’s Grotto, look for the elderly dwarf Gautstafr near the road. Speak with him when he complains about back pain and asks for herbs. This conversation starts Put a Spring in Thy Step.

Complete the quest and unlock Magick Archer
-
Give Gautstafr the requested herbs
Provide the herbs he asks for to advance the remedy objective. The exact objective is delivered through the quest, so follow the active instructions in your log.
-
Escort Gautstafr to Geyser Hamlet
Once the remedy objective is complete, accompany Gautstafr to Geyser Hamlet. The journey to its hot springs is the central escort portion of the quest; stay with him and protect him from threats along the route.
-
Speak with Cliodhna at the hot springs
At the destination, Gautstafr’s wife Cliodhna reveals that she is the Magick Archer Maister. The encounter grants the Magick Archer vocation to the Arisen.
How to get Martyr’s Bolt
Cliodhna’s Maister sequence also gives you Martyr’s Bolt. If you are checking an item or reward list and see Spellbow’s Paradox instead, that is the alternate name used for the teaching scroll associated with this same reward sequence.

Route and escort advice
- Plan the approach: Drabnir’s Grotto is the described access route into the area where Gautstafr can be found.
- Keep the escort as the priority: Gautstafr must reach Geyser Hamlet’s hot springs for the quest to resolve.
- Expect regional danger: The volcanic route and escort can expose you to enemy pressure, so bring healing and a party suited to travel as well as combat.
- Choose your timing sensibly: The quest route and reward are established, but there is no dependable one-size-fits-all level recommendation. Attempt it when your party can safely handle the journey.
