It depends on which playlist you mean. Editing a playlist on YouTube changes the collection of videos on your channel; it does not change the video or audio currently being sent to viewers. To change the live program, edit the queue in the encoder or cloud playout service that is sending the stream. YouTube documents these as separate parts of the workflow: playlist management in Studio and live video delivery through an encoder connected with a stream URL and key. First, identify which playlist you need to change
“Playlist” can mean either a YouTube playlist viewers can browse, or the playout queue of videos an encoder or cloud service is broadcasting. They are not interchangeable: YouTube’s playlist editor manages a collection on the channel, while the encoder sends the live feed to YouTube. This distinction follows from YouTube’s documentation of the two workflows; YouTube does not say that editing a channel playlist controls an encoder’s queue.
- Change the videos or order in a channel playlist: use YouTube’s playlist controls below.
- Change what viewers are seeing or hearing right now: use the active encoder or playout service’s queue or source-switch controls.
- Change a playlist for a broadcast that is scheduled but has not started: edit it in the service that will generate the live program, and verify that the change is saved to that scheduled broadcast.
Update a YouTube playlist
- Sign in to YouTube with an account that can manage the playlist, then open the target playlist.
- Select Edit beside the section you want to change.
- To reorder videos, open the playlist and drag a video up or down to its new position. You can also save a video to an existing playlist from that video’s watch page.
- Check the playlist page to confirm the saved order or contents.
This updates the YouTube playlist, not the live picture or audio. YouTube’s help instructions do not specify how quickly a playlist already open in another viewer’s tab refreshes.
Change the actual program on a running livestream
- Identify the sender. Find out whether the current feed is coming from desktop streaming software, a hardware encoder, or a cloud playout service.
- Open its active queue or source playlist. Make the change in the system generating the live program, rather than in the YouTube channel playlist editor.
- Use that product’s documented live-edit or source-switch controls. If its instructions cover only scheduled broadcasts, do not assume the same controls apply after the broadcast has started.
- Check both previews. Watch the sender’s outgoing preview and the YouTube live page to confirm what is reaching viewers.
YouTube’s encoder instructions say to enter the YouTube server URL and stream key in the encoder; when the encoder starts sending content, the stream is live. Live Control Room instructions cover stream settings and metadata, but the reviewed YouTube guidance does not document changing a separate encoder’s media queue there. - Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Whether a queue edit takes effect immediately, requires a restart, or interrupts output depends on the encoder or service and its configuration. Confirm the behavior for your specific product and destination before relying on a seamless change.
If the livestream is scheduled but has not started
Check the scheduling service’s instructions for editing the playlist attached to that broadcast. For example, OneStream Live’s help page describes editing a scheduled playlist broadcast in its dashboard: open Streams, select Edit, change the playlist video content, continue through destination and stream details, then schedule the broadcast. The instructions describe editing before the broadcast goes live; they do not establish that the same workflow changes a broadcast that is already running. What to check before switching a live queue
- Where the queue lives: YouTube channel playlist, local encoder, hardware encoder, or cloud playout service.
- When the change must apply: before scheduling, before going live, or during an active broadcast.
- What the product documents: playlist editing is not proof of live switching; look for instructions that specifically cover an already-running stream.
- What viewers receive: verify the outgoing program on the YouTube live page after changing it.
Playout.video advertises “Smart Playlists & Dynamic Queues,” live playlist edits, and inline switching with no downtime. Those are vendor claims, not independently verified results. Treat it as a candidate if you need to edit the actual stream queue, and confirm the behavior with your exact setup and destination before depending on uninterrupted output. Playout.video
YouTube describes stream keys this way: “Stream keys are like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Keep the key private and use the encoder’s configured key when checking which sender controls the feed. YouTube’s live stream settings guide
