YouTube does not document whether resetting a key preserves an ingest that is already live, so no one can guarantee a seamless mid-sermon change. If continuity matters, do not rotate during the service unless the change is urgent and you have a tested contingency plan.
What a stream key does—and why timing matters
YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” The key is the credential your encoder uses to send its feed to YouTube. Anyone with access to it may be able to stream to your channel, so treat it as sensitive. See YouTube Help’s Manage live stream settings.
Resetting creates a new key that must be entered in the encoder. YouTube’s published setup instructions cover resetting and updating the encoder, but do not say whether the reset leaves an existing connection intact. That uncertainty makes a planned change between services safer than changing credentials during a sermon.
Choose a rotation window
Routine maintenance
Schedule the reset when the church is not relying on the stream. Allow time to connect the encoder, wait for YouTube’s preview, and check sound and picture before the next service. This gives you a chance to correct a bad paste or destination setting without risking an active broadcast.

Suspected compromise
If the key may have been exposed, treat it as a security issue and rotate promptly. YouTube does not establish that an active ingest continues after a reset, so be prepared for interruption and have an operator check the public player. Do not leave a potentially compromised key in use solely to avoid a possible disruption.
Reset the key and update the encoder
- Confirm channel access. Sign in to YouTube Studio and choose Create → Go live to open Live Control Room. You need to be a channel owner or manager to reset a stream key; editors and viewers cannot. The exact steps are in YouTube’s stream-settings guide.
- Open the stream settings. In Live Control Room, select Stream and locate the Stream key section. If you use a custom reusable key, confirm you are changing the intended stream setup.
- Reset and copy the replacement. Select Reset next to the hidden key, then copy the newly generated value. YouTube’s instruction is to copy the new key and update the encoder software.
- Paste into the key field, not the server field. In your encoder, locate its stream key or stream-key field and replace the old value. The encoder setup also uses a stream URL (sometimes labelled server or RTMP server); leave that destination intact unless you have a separate reason to change it. YouTube’s encoder setup guide explains the URL-and-key arrangement.
- Connect for a controlled check. Start or connect the encoder and wait for the preview to appear in Live Control Room. Confirm the intended video, audio, and picture are present. Follow the event’s normal go-live process only after the preview is ready.
- Check the public watch page. Verify that viewers can see and hear the stream, then monitor stream quality during the broadcast. YouTube’s streaming tips recommend previewing, monitoring, and testing failover before the event.
Can you change the key while the sermon is live?
YouTube’s reviewed instructions do not document a seamless in-session key replacement or confirm that an already-connected encoder remains accepted after the key is reset. That means a mid-service reset cannot be promised to preserve playback. If a live change is unavoidable, use an operator who can watch the public player, expect that the stream may be interrupted, and be ready to restore service using your tested procedure. For routine rotation, wait until a non-service window.

A second encoder is useful only as part of a tested contingency plan. YouTube recommends testing encoder failover in advance—for example, stopping the primary encoder or disconnecting its Ethernet and confirming that the player rolls over to the backup. This does not establish that backup equipment makes a key reset seamless. See YouTube’s streaming tips.
Troubleshoot a failed connection after rotation
- The encoder errors on startup: Check the current key in Live Control Room and paste it into the encoder’s stream-key field. YouTube lists this as a troubleshooting step in its live-stream troubleshooting guide.
- The encoder connects to the wrong destination: Check that the stream URL/server and stream key are in their separate fields. A valid key pasted into the server field will not correct a mismatched setup.
- Your software signs in to YouTube directly instead of using a key: YouTube says to contact the third-party software’s support team for help with that sign-in-based workflow.
- The preview appears, but viewers report a problem: Check the event’s watch page and monitor audio and video quality. Do not assume a preview alone confirms the public player is healthy.
- The stream stops and you need the recording: Keep a local recording. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived; streams over 12 hours may not be captured at all. YouTube recommends keeping a local archive. See Archive live streams.
