Update a supported Xbox controller from Settings → Devices & connections → Accessories on your Xbox, or with the Xbox Accessories app on Windows. For PC updates—and whenever wireless updating fails—connect the controller with a USB data cable and leave it connected until the update finishes.
Before you update
You need an internet-connected Xbox console or a Windows PC with the Xbox Accessories app. Charge the controller or use fresh batteries, and keep the console or PC powered on while the update runs. A USB cable is the most reliable connection for updating from Windows and for troubleshooting.
- Use a cable that carries data, not just power. A charge-only cable may turn on the controller without allowing the console or PC to detect it. See Xbox guidance on USB ports and connections.
- Connect directly to the console or PC rather than through a hub or dock if detection or updating is unreliable.
- Make sure the console or PC has an internet connection. Do not unplug the controller, close the app, or turn off the device during an update.
These steps apply to supported Xbox Wireless Controllers, including Xbox Series X|S controllers, compatible Xbox One models, and the Elite Wireless Controller Series 2. The Xbox Adaptive Controller has a dedicated update path described below. Some licensed third-party controllers require the manufacturer’s own app or update procedure; if one does not appear in Xbox Accessories, check its maker’s support instructions. Xbox’s support hub is the starting point for device-specific help.
Update a controller on an Xbox console
- Turn on the Xbox and sign in. Press the Xbox button on the controller.
- Open Profile & system → Settings → Devices & connections → Accessories.
- Select the controller you want to update.
- Open Device options, usually shown as an ellipsis (…). Review the firmware version shown there.
- If an update is offered, choose Update, Update now, or the equivalent command shown on your console, then follow the prompts.
- Keep the controller connected and powered until the console confirms completion. Restart or reconnect it if prompted.
Dashboard labels can change slightly with software versions. Look for the controller’s firmware information and an update command in its Accessories options. Microsoft’s Xbox controller update instructions cover the official process.

Update a controller on Windows
- Install Xbox Accessories from the Microsoft Store if it is not already on the PC.
- Connect the controller directly to the PC with a USB data cable. USB is the recommended route for updating; do not rely on Bluetooth for firmware updating.
- Open Xbox Accessories and select the controller when it appears.
- If the app shows a firmware notification or an Update button, select it and follow the prompts.
- Leave the cable connected and the app and PC running until the app reports that the update is complete.
- Disconnect and reconnect the controller, then test it. If the displayed version has not refreshed, close and reopen Xbox Accessories.
For app help, see Microsoft’s Xbox Accessories app support page. Bluetooth can be useful for ordinary wireless play, but USB avoids pairing interruptions during an update.
Update an Xbox Adaptive Controller
Use the official Xbox accessory-management route for an Adaptive Controller and follow the instructions on Xbox’s Adaptive Controller update page. Because switches, hubs, and other connected devices may be part of an accessibility setup, avoid disconnecting them unnecessarily; follow the device-specific instructions if the update requires a different configuration.

Check whether the update succeeded
Reopen the controller in the console’s Accessories settings or in Xbox Accessories on Windows. Check the displayed firmware version and confirm that no update prompt remains. Xbox does not have one universal version number for every controller model and release, so use the version shown for your own device rather than comparing it with an unrelated model’s number.
Then test the controller in the way you use it: check its connection, buttons, triggers, vibration, headset audio, and attached accessories as applicable. A version display may take a moment to refresh on PC; close and reopen the app if needed.

Troubleshoot detection and update failures
The controller does not appear
- Unplug and reconnect the cable, then try a different USB port.
- Try a known-good data-capable cable. If possible, test the cable with another device.
- Connect directly to the console or PC instead of through a hub or dock.
- Briefly remove the controller’s batteries or rechargeable pack, then reconnect power and try again.
- Restart the console or PC. On Windows, close and reopen Xbox Accessories.
- If you were trying wirelessly, pair the controller again. Try another controller or another cable to identify whether the problem follows the controller or the connection.

The app says the controller is up to date
That is a successful update check, not an error. If a problem remains, power-cycle and re-pair the controller, restart the console or PC, and test it over USB. Check whether the issue happens in more than one game or on another compatible device; also inspect the headset, battery pack, USB port, or wireless adapter if one is involved.

The update appears stuck
- Give it several minutes before interrupting it, especially if the progress indicator has not visibly changed.
- If the app or console is clearly unresponsive, close Xbox Accessories if applicable, then restart the PC or console.
- Reconnect the controller by USB and reopen Accessories. Check whether the update resumes or is offered again.
- If it still fails, try another data cable and USB port, then test the controller on another compatible Xbox or Windows PC.
- Contact Xbox Support if the controller remains undetected or the update repeatedly fails.
Avoid repeatedly unplugging the controller while firmware is being written; an interruption can leave it harder to detect.
The update fails wirelessly or the controller disconnects afterward
Switch to USB for the update. Wireless failures can be caused by a low battery, interference, the controller going to sleep, a lost pairing, or a problem with the console’s or PC’s wireless hardware. If the controller works by cable but not wirelessly, re-pair it and check the batteries or rechargeable pack, distance, interference, and receiving device. Can a firmware update fix stick drift or broken buttons?
Not usually. Firmware may include bug fixes or improvements to compatibility, connectivity, or stability, but an update is not guaranteed to solve a particular problem. It cannot repair physical stick wear or damage, broken buttons or triggers, liquid damage, a failing battery, or a damaged charging port. If the controller is detected and already up to date, troubleshoot the fault itself rather than repeatedly attempting firmware updates.
When to seek service or replace the controller
Contact Xbox Support or consider repair or replacement if the controller is not detected by multiple known-good devices, its USB connection fails mechanically, it has persistent physical damage, or firmware updates repeatedly fail. If it works only when wired, first isolate the wireless connection, pairing, battery, or receiving device; the fault may not be in the controller itself.
