Check the laptop maker’s specifications and service manual: memory described as integrated or part of the system board is soldered, while a separate memory-module removal procedure indicates a socketed module. Some laptops have both.
Check whether your exact laptop has upgradeable RAM
Start with the full model number, machine type, or service tag—not just the product family name. A family can include configurations with different memory layouts. Find the identifier on the laptop’s label, in firmware or System Information, or on the manufacturer’s support page, then open the documentation for that exact model and configuration.
In the specifications and service manual, search for terms such as “memory,” “integrated,” “onboard,” “soldered,” “system board,” “SODIMM,” and “memory module.” If the manual says memory is integrated into the system board, that memory is not a removable module. If it provides a procedure to remove a memory module, that module is socketed and can generally be replaced, subject to the laptop’s supported configurations.
A laptop can combine soldered memory with one removable slot. Dell’s Inspiron 5490 service manual says the primary memory module is integrated into the system board and scopes the removal procedure to a secondary module. Dell’s Vostro 5490 manual describes the same distinction. In cases like these, only the socketed portion is upgradeable; the integrated portion stays in place.

Operating-system reports and generic memory-upgrade tools can offer clues, but a reported slot count does not prove that a physical, user-accessible slot is available. Confirm the layout against the manufacturer’s model-specific documentation. Crucial’s compatibility selector can provide another compatibility check, but the laptop maker’s manual and specifications should guide the decision.
Choose RAM that the laptop supports
Before buying, confirm the supported memory type and capacity in the documentation for your exact configuration. Record the installed memory, the number of socketed and populated slots, the supported total capacity, module form factor, DDR generation, and supported speed. Check whether the existing module can remain alongside the proposed upgrade.

Do not choose a module based only on its capacity or a broad label such as “laptop RAM” or “DDR4.” The memory generation, module format, and supported limits must match. For example, a Crucial 8 GB DDR4-2666 SODIMM listing specifies DDR4, SODIMM form factor, 1.2 V, and capacity; those are the kinds of details to compare with your laptop’s requirements, not a recommendation for an unspecified model.
Once you have confirmed the specifications, compare products for the exact laptop model and configuration. If the module’s notch does not line up with the slot’s ridge, stop rather than forcing it; Crucial’s installation guide likewise warns against forcing a mismatched module.

Install the module using the laptop’s service procedure
Read the exact service manual before opening the laptop. The order of operations varies: a procedure may require removing the base cover, disconnecting the battery, or taking other model-specific steps. Use the tools and power and electrostatic-discharge precautions specified for your device. Work on a stable, clean surface, and do not pry or force a component.
- Prepare the laptop: Follow the manufacturer’s instructions to shut it down, disconnect power, and prepare it for service.
- Open the case and isolate power: Remove the cover and disconnect the battery or take other precautions only as directed by the laptop’s manual.
- Remove or access the module: Follow the model’s instructions for releasing the slot clips and handling the memory. Do not assume a procedure for another laptop applies.
- Install compatible RAM: Align the notch with the slot, insert the module as the manual directs, and secure it. Dell’s Latitude 5521 replacement guide, published January 27, 2026, shows one model-specific method: insert the module at an angle and press it down until it clicks.
- Reassemble and check detection: Close the laptop according to its manual, start it, and check the detected memory total in firmware or the operating system.
The Latitude steps are an example, not a universal sequence. If the parts or case differ from the documentation for your laptop, stop and verify the exact model’s procedure before continuing.

If the new RAM is not detected
- Check the detected total in firmware or the operating system. In Windows, Crucial’s guide points to the Installed Memory information in System settings.
- If the amount is lower than expected, power down and follow the laptop and module instructions to check that the module is seated correctly.
- If the laptop fails to start or reports an error, use the manufacturer’s troubleshooting procedure for that model rather than repeatedly forcing or reseating components.
