If you own Pokémon Legends: Z-A for Nintendo Switch and want the Switch 2 Edition features, keep your game and buy the separately sold Pokémon Legends: Z-A – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition Upgrade Pack from the Nintendo eShop on Nintendo Switch 2. You need the full game and a Nintendo Switch 2; the upgrade pack is not a standalone copy of the game.
How to upgrade your Switch copy
- Make sure you have the full game. Your Nintendo Switch copy of Pokémon Legends: Z-A—digital or physical—provides the base game required for the upgrade.
- On Nintendo Switch 2, open the Nintendo eShop. Search for Pokémon Legends: Z-A – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition Upgrade Pack. Check that the listing is the Upgrade Pack, not the complete game or the separate Mega Dimension DLC.
- Purchase and download the pack. Nintendo’s US listing says the pack requires Pokémon Legends: Z-A. Once installed, launch the game on Switch 2 to play with the Switch 2 Edition features.
Nintendo lists the Upgrade Pack’s release date as October 16, 2025. See the official US Upgrade Pack listing for the product and availability in your storefront.
Do you need to buy the game again?
No, if you already own the Switch game: Nintendo says existing Switch owners can buy the Upgrade Pack to play the Switch 2 Edition. If you do not own the base game, you must acquire it as well as the upgrade, or buy the complete Switch 2 Edition. Nintendo lists a physical Switch version, but the cartridge is the base game—not the Switch 2 upgrade.

These are Nintendo US prices observed October 3, 2026, not guaranteed prices elsewhere or later. Check your regional eShop for current pricing and availability. Nintendo’s listings establish the Upgrade Pack as a route for existing Switch owners; you do not need to buy the complete edition just to upgrade.

What does the Switch 2 Edition improve?
Nintendo describes the Switch 2 Edition as offering improved performance, enhanced resolution, and smoother frame rates. Its official listings do not give specific resolution or frame-rate targets, so those benefits should not be read as a promise of a particular number or benchmark. The Nintendo Switch 2 Edition listing gives the feature description and product details.
Can you use the Switch 2 Edition features on the original Switch?
No. The Switch 2 Edition features are for Nintendo Switch 2. Nintendo UK says that using the physical or virtual game card on an original Nintendo Switch plays the Switch version without the additional Switch 2 Edition features. If you use both systems, the upgrade does not turn the original Switch into Switch 2 hardware.

Storage to check before downloading
Nintendo’s US product listing gives file sizes of 6 GB for the Switch version and 11.3 GB for the Switch 2 version, and cautions that additional storage may be needed. Those listed sizes are not a guarantee of the exact free space required for your download. Check the local store listing and available console storage before installing.

The Upgrade Pack adds the Switch 2 Edition feature set; it is not the Mega Dimension DLC. Nintendo lists Mega Dimension separately and says the full game is required for that DLC. Review the product name carefully in the eShop so you buy the item you intend.
