Use rsync over SSH with a private partial directory, then rerun the same command if the connection drops. For ordinary finished video files, this keeps incomplete data separate from the final filename and can help rsync continue efficiently. Avoid --append for an interrupted transfer of a normal, completed video; that option is intended for a destination that is already a verified prefix of a file still growing.
Before you upload
- Install
rsyncon both your local machine and the VPS. Remote-shell transfers require rsync at both ends. - Make sure you can connect to the VPS over SSH and know the account name, host name, and destination path.
- Choose a dedicated media directory, such as
/srv/videos/, and confirm that your VPS account can write to it. - Keep the partial directory private. Rsync warns that it must not be writable by other users.
The examples use [email protected] as a placeholder: replace it with your actual VPS username and host. In rsync’s documented USER@HOST:DEST form, the single colon selects remote-shell transport; SSH is a supported remote shell. See the rsync manual.
Upload one video with a resumable workflow
- Run the command from your local machine:
rsync -av --info=progress2 --partial-dir=.rsync-partial -e ssh -- ./video.mp4 [email protected]:/srv/videos/Replace
./video.mp4with the local file path and[email protected]:/srv/videos/with your VPS account and destination. The--marks the end of options, which helps avoid interpreting a source path beginning with a hyphen as an option. - Let the transfer finish. Rsync prints progress; the completed video goes in
/srv/videos/. The relative partial directory,.rsync-partial, is used as staging for incomplete data alongside the destination files. - If the connection fails, run the same command again. Keep the source and destination paths and the partial-directory option unchanged. Rsync can use preserved partial data to speed a subsequent transfer where applicable; it does not make an incomplete file a finished or playable video.
- Use the final file only after rsync completes. Keep a media server or other reader pointed at the final directory, not the staging directory, while an upload is in progress.
Rsync documents --partial-dir=DIR as a way to keep partial files separately and use them to speed a later transfer. A relative partial-directory name is appropriate for a staging directory alongside destination files; rsync adds a filter rule to exclude that directory from transfers. Consult the rsync manual for the full option behavior.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Upload a directory carefully
For a video library, decide whether you want the destination to contain the source directory itself or just its contents. Rsync’s source trailing slash changes that path behavior. Do not scale the one-file command to an entire library until you have checked the manual’s examples and tested the exact source and destination paths with a small sample.
Which rsync resume option should you use?
| Approach | Best suited to | Tradeoff |
|---|---|---|
--partial-dir=.rsync-partial |
General interrupted transfers of finished files, keeping incomplete data apart from the final filename. | Requires a safe, private staging directory; reuse behavior and efficiency can depend on rsync versions. |
--append-verify |
A destination file is known to be the exact prefix of a source that is still growing, and you want existing file data checked as part of verification. | Not a general resume switch for an arbitrary finished video; verification adds work and the growing-file assumption still applies. |
Why not use --append for every failed upload?
--append assumes the receiving file’s existing bytes exactly match the beginning of the source. That assumption fits a known growing file, not simply any transfer that stopped partway through. --append-verify verifies all file data as part of verification, but it also belongs to that specialized growing-file case. For ordinary finished video uploads, use the partial-directory workflow instead. The rsync manual documents these distinctions.

What about -P and --inplace?
-P is shorthand for --partial --progress; it does not specify a separate partial directory. Rsync also warns that --inplace can leave a destination inconsistent after an interrupted or failed update, and that other users should not access a file while it is being updated. Avoid using it casually for media that may be read during upload.
Version and storage considerations
- Rsync’s modern in-place reuse of a file in a partial directory requires rsync 3.2.0 or newer on both endpoints. If versions differ or are older, do not assume that partial data will be reused in the same way.
- Partial files consume destination storage until the transfer completes or you remove them. Leave room for the video and any retained partial data.
- Do not let unrelated users write to the partial directory. It is staging data, not a shared media folder.
- A successful rsync exit is evidence that the copy completed. If you need an independent integrity check, generate a cryptographic checksum on each end and compare the results, using a command appropriate to your local and VPS operating systems.
- Video is often already compressed, so do not add
-zby default expecting a speed gain. Any benefit depends on the files and network conditions.
Troubleshooting interrupted or failed transfers
| Symptom | Likely check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Rsync cannot connect to the remote host. | SSH reachability, host name, username, and the VPS’s SSH access settings. | Confirm you can reach the correct VPS over SSH, then rerun rsync with the corrected account or host. |
| Permission denied at the destination. | The remote account may not be allowed to write to the chosen directory. | Use a directory writable by that account or have the VPS administrator set up the intended media directory and permissions. |
| The transfer stopped, leaving a partial file. | Confirm the original source file still exists and the destination and partial-directory paths are unchanged. | Rerun the same command. Keep the incomplete data out of the final media directory until completion. |
| Rsync does not appear to reuse partial data as expected. | Check both endpoints’ rsync versions and whether the same partial directory is being used. | Modern in-place reuse of partial-directory data requires version 3.2.0 or newer at both ends. Regardless, rerun the documented command and let rsync decide how to complete the transfer. |
| A partial video appears in a player or streaming library. | The player or server may be reading the staging directory or an incomplete destination. | Point readers at the final media directory and expose a video only after the upload completes. |
