You can make a black-screen rain stream by sending a still black image and rain audio from an encoder to YouTube Live Control Room. Before relying on it as a 24/7 YouTube sleep stream, test the feed, confirm you have streaming rights to the audio, and plan to monitor the stream: YouTube’s guidance does not promise uninterrupted 24/7 operation.
What you need before you start
- A YouTube channel that is verified and has no live-streaming restriction within the previous 90 days. YouTube’s general live-streaming guidance also sets a minimum age of 16. See YouTube’s computer live-streaming tips and Get started with live streaming.
- An encoder that can send a video and audio feed. YouTube supports encoder streaming, but does not prescribe a particular encoder or a configuration guaranteed to run around the clock.
- A black visual source and rain audio that you made or have permission to stream.
- A stable computer, power supply, and internet connection for the do-it-yourself encoder approach. YouTube does not specify minimum computer, bandwidth, or backup-power requirements for this setup.
Set up the black screen and rain audio
- Prepare the visual. Use a still black image or a black scene in your encoder. Make sure the scene is actually being sent as video rather than leaving the encoder without a video source.
- Prepare the sound. Add a rain recording and listen through it for unwanted silence, abrupt endings, or distracting changes. For a continuous sleep experience, arrange the audio to repeat smoothly if your encoder supports it. This is a practical production suggestion, not a YouTube requirement.
- Check the audio level. Listen from the encoder output and from a separate playback device. Make sure the rain is audible without distortion and that the stream does not become silent when the audio source reaches its end.
- Confirm your rights. YouTube’s livestream terms require you to have the necessary rights to use live content. If you use a third-party rain recording, check its license specifically for livestreaming, territories, duration, monetization, and attribution, and keep a copy of the terms or permission.
Create the YouTube live stream and connect the encoder
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Create > Go live to enter Live Control Room. You can create a stream there or schedule one, then configure the encoder using YouTube’s current live-stream settings guidance.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key shown for the broadcast into the corresponding encoder fields. The URL is the destination for the feed; the stream key identifies the stream to YouTube. Treat the key like a password: do not show it on screen, share it, or publish it.
- Start the encoder and wait for the incoming feed to appear in Live Control Room’s preview. Confirm that the image is black and that the rain audio is present before making the stream public.
- Choose a latency setting suited to the audience. YouTube notes that lower latency can increase playback buffering. Because a sleep stream is generally not conversational, minimizing delay is usually less important than a stable listening experience.
- Run a test broadcast, public or unlisted, and check playback from the channel’s watch page on another device. YouTube recommends testing, reviewing the preview, and continuously monitoring audio and video quality.
Keep the stream running—and understand what 24/7 requires
With a local encoder, the stream depends on the computer, encoder, power, and network continuing to work. If any of those stop, the feed may end or become unstable. YouTube recommends continuous quality monitoring, but its public guidance does not guarantee an uninterrupted 24/7 configuration or prescribe a specific recovery setup. Plan to check the stream and respond to disconnections, unexpected silence, or playback problems rather than assuming a test guarantees future uptime.
For any encoder or operating setup you evaluate, consider whether it can send the intended video and audio for long periods, how easily you can monitor it, what happens after a dropped connection, and whether your local power and internet are dependable. YouTube does not rank encoders for this static-image use case.
Or let it run in the cloud
StreamNeo keeps an uploaded video or playlist looping as a YouTube live stream from the cloud: upload your recording, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home, so your computer and home connection do not need to run the broadcast. It streams the uploaded file as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers; it also attempts automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for uploaded videos and playlists sent to YouTube, not a live camera feed. Copyright, Content ID, and monetization
Live audio can be interrupted by Content ID
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. If it identifies a match, it may replace the stream with a placeholder, warn you, interrupt or terminate the broadcast, or take other enforcement action. YouTube says even licensed third-party content can require the rights holder to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist. A purchase receipt or a credit in your description is not a substitute for confirming the license and any allowlisting requirement. See YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams and tips to find safe music.
YouTube’s safe-music guidance identifies public-domain music or music used with copyright-owner permission as safer choices, and warns that a “free” label does not prevent a Content ID claim. That guidance is about music; the broader requirement to have rights applies to the full live content, including rain recordings.

Monetization is not guaranteed
YouTube’s monetization policies apply to live streams. Its July 15, 2025 policy update renamed “repetitious content” as “inauthentic content” and says repetitive or mass-produced content is ineligible under the policy. Reused-content review is separate from copyright: permission to use a recording does not, by itself, establish monetization eligibility. Keep your production genuinely authored and be able to explain what you created or added, but do not treat any particular variation as a guarantee of approval. See YouTube channel monetization policies.
Depending on channel access and settings, YouTube lists ads, Super Chat and Super Stickers, and channel memberships as possible live-stream revenue features. Ad slots are not guaranteed to serve. These are potential platform features, not expected income. See YouTube’s live-stream monetization guidance.

Troubleshoot common problems
| What you see | What to check | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| No preview in Live Control Room | Whether the encoder is running and using the current stream URL and key. | Check the encoder’s connection fields, restart its output, and verify that the intended stream is selected in YouTube Studio. Do not expose the stream key while troubleshooting. |
| Black screen, but no rain audio | Whether the correct audio source is selected, audible in the encoder’s output, and still playing. | Check the encoder’s audio meters and source routing, then test playback on another device. Confirm that the recording or playlist does not end in silence. |
| Audio cuts out or playback buffers | The encoder’s audio/video output and local network, as well as YouTube’s preview and watch-page playback. | Monitor the feed continuously during testing, use a latency setting appropriate to the noninteractive stream, and investigate local network or encoder interruptions. YouTube cautions that lower latency can increase buffering. |
| Stream is interrupted after a copyright match | Whether the rain audio contains third-party material and whether its rights cover live streaming; for licensed material, whether the channel needs Content ID allowlisting. | Resolve the rights or allowlisting issue with the rights holder, then use audio you are entitled to stream. A description credit alone does not resolve a rights issue. |
| Stream stops when you leave | Whether the broadcast is being encoded locally and the computer, encoder, power, and connection remain active. | For a local setup, keep those dependencies running and monitor for failure. Alternatively, use a cloud service designed to loop uploaded video without requiring your computer to stay on. |
Before you publish
- Verify the channel is eligible to live stream.
- Confirm the black visual and rain audio both reach the Live Control Room preview.
- Test the watch-page playback from another device, including the audio and the continuity of the recording.
- Secure the stream key and document the audio rights and any Content ID allowlisting.
- Decide how you will monitor the stream and respond if the feed drops; YouTube does not promise uninterrupted 24/7 service.
