Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →To loop a public-domain film on YouTube Live without leaving a computer running, upload a rights-cleared copy to a cloud streaming service, connect it to your eligible YouTube channel, and start a looping broadcast. First verify the exact film version and its audio: a film listed as public domain may include a later restoration, soundtrack, or other material with separate rights.
What you need before you start
- A YouTube channel that is verified and has no live-streaming restriction within the previous 90 days. YouTube’s current encoder setup guidance describes these prerequisites.
- A downloadable film file you are permitted to stream, including its soundtrack and any later-added material.
- A cloud encoder service that accepts uploaded video, can connect to YouTube by authorization or stream key, and supports looping or playlists.
- A plan for checking the live broadcast and deciding whether you also need a replay archive.
A cloud encoder keeps sending the feed from its servers, so your computer does not need to stay online. A local encoder such as OBS instead requires a powered computer and stable internet while it sends the broadcast.
Verify the film and soundtrack rights
Public-domain status is not a universal label that automatically clears every copy. YouTube says, “Ultimately, it’s your responsibility to verify that a work is in the public domain before you upload it to YouTube,” and says there is no official list of public-domain works. Copyright laws vary by country or region, and rights can apply to derivative works. See YouTube’s copyright guidance.
Check the exact version, not just the title
Record where the file came from and inspect its credits, source, soundtrack, restoration, and other additions. An older film may be public domain while a later restoration or newly recorded soundtrack is not. Internet Archive warns that uploader-provided rights metadata is not guaranteed and that its historical guidance concerns U.S.-produced films; its film and video guide is a starting point, not a legal determination. Its 2020 article gives 1923 or earlier as a general U.S.-film heuristic, but that does not establish the status of a specific copy or settle rights outside the United States.

Consider where the stream will be available
YouTube’s live-stream terms require you to have the rights needed to exploit live content on Google services throughout the world, including applicable music licensing rights. A conclusion that a film is public domain in one country may not establish worldwide clearance. Read the YouTube live-stream terms and obtain appropriate rights advice if the status is uncertain.
Set up the cloud loop and go live
- Confirm channel eligibility. In YouTube Studio, select encoder streaming and prepare the broadcast destination. Confirm the channel is verified and has no live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days. Follow YouTube’s current setup steps for the interface and destination settings.
- Choose a cloud encoder. Check that the service accepts your video file, supports a repeat loop or playlist, and connects to YouTube through an approved authorization flow or a stream key. Provider capabilities and availability can change, so verify the current workflow with the provider. For example, LiveGoLive’s service page describes upload, playlist, looping, and stream-key or Google authorization options; those are the vendor’s claims, not an independent service test.
- Prepare the YouTube destination. Create or select the live broadcast in YouTube Studio and use the service’s authorized connection flow or the stream key for that destination. Treat a stream key like a password: do not share it or publish it, and use YouTube’s controls to replace it if it is exposed.
- Upload and arrange the film. Upload a file you have cleared for streaming. Make a one-film playlist for a continuous loop, or arrange multiple cleared films in the order you want. Turn on the provider’s repeat or loop option if it is available.
- Preview before starting. Check that picture and sound play correctly, the intended YouTube destination is selected, and the loop or playlist behaves as expected. Start the broadcast only after the preview looks right.
- Monitor YouTube Studio. Watch stream health and any copyright notices after going live. A successful preview does not guarantee that YouTube will leave the broadcast uninterrupted.
Understand copyright matching and monetization separately
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. If it identifies a match, it may replace the stream with a placeholder image, warn you, interrupt or terminate the broadcast, or apply a strike. Even if you have a license, the rights owner may need to add your channel to a Content ID allowlist; claims can also appear on an archived stream after the broadcast ends. Details are in YouTube’s live copyright guidance.

Rights clearance is different from monetization eligibility. YouTube’s monetization policies apply to live content and assess whether it is original and authentic. Repetitive or reused material that adds little original commentary, modification, education, or entertainment value may not qualify. Public-domain status alone does not guarantee that an unmodified film loop can be monetized.
Decide whether you need a replay archive
A continuous live feed and a complete replay are separate outcomes. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived; streams over 12 hours may not be captured at all. If preserving a replay matters, plan a shorter broadcast rotation and/or retain a lawful source or recording backup. Check YouTube’s archive guidance before relying on an automatic archive.

Choose between cloud streaming, a local encoder, and an upload
| Option | Must a computer stay on? | Best fit | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| StreamNeo cloud service | No | Keeping an uploaded film or playlist live on YouTube without running a home computer | Requires a paid slot after the one free day; see current plans at StreamNeo pricing. |
| Local encoder such as OBS | Yes, while it sends the feed | Direct control without a cloud streaming subscription | You provide the computer, power, stable internet, and configuration. |
| YouTube Premiere or ordinary upload | No continuous live encoder is needed | A scheduled or on-demand film presentation | It is not the same as a continuously looped live broadcast. |
Premiere and upload workflows are not continuous live encoders. The table describes the general workflow distinction; check current YouTube and software interfaces for feature availability.

Troubleshoot common problems
- YouTube will not let you start encoder streaming: Check channel verification and whether a live-streaming restriction falls within the previous 90 days, then follow YouTube’s current encoder setup guidance.
- The service is not sending video to the intended broadcast: Check that the selected YouTube destination and stream key match. If the key may have been exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update the service.
- The film plays once and stops: Check that repeat or loop is enabled, or that the playlist is set to continue. Confirm the uploaded file completes playback in preview.
- The stream is interrupted or shows a placeholder: Check YouTube Studio for a copyright notice or stream-health issue. A match may require rights-owner action, such as allowlisting your channel, even where you believe you have a license.
- The replay is missing or incomplete: A broadcast exceeding 12 hours may not be archived by YouTube. Use a shorter rotation and keep a lawful source or recording backup if replay preservation matters.
- A public-domain claim is challenged: Recheck the exact copy’s source, restoration, and audio rights, including applicable territories. Catalog metadata alone does not establish clearance.
