You need an encoder or media pipeline that can read the stored files, sequence and loop them, create a live output, and send it to YouTube’s configured ingestion endpoint.
How the bucket-to-YouTube workflow fits together
Think of the bucket as the library, not the broadcaster. The stream needs a process between that library and YouTube Live:
- Store the source videos: Keep the video files, and any playlist or manifest data your setup uses, in object storage.
- Read the objects: An encoder running on a persistent machine, or a media service with a suitable integration, must be able to access the files. The exact connector, download method, or mounted filesystem depends on your cloud provider and deployment.
- Build a continuous program: Select and loop videos in sequence. If their codecs, dimensions, frame rates, timestamps, or audio layouts differ, you may need to normalize them for consistent playback.
- Encode and deliver: Send the resulting live feed to the ingestion address and stream name/key associated with your YouTube live stream.
- Monitor and recover: Supervise the encoder, watch stream health, log failures, and have a tested restart or recovery process.
Google Cloud’s Live Stream API illustrates why storage and delivery should not be conflated: it accepts live RTMP or SRT input, transcodes that input to HLS or DASH, and can save output to Cloud Storage. Its documentation does not describe using a bucket object as a direct YouTube Live input. See the Google Cloud Live Stream API overview and HLS quickstart.
Choose who will run the encoder
| Approach | Who handles the encoder and recovery | Bucket access and sequencing | Protocols and latency | Cost and effort |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Self-managed encoder | You operate the encoder host, supervise the process, monitor failures, and arrange recovery. | You select and configure the provider-specific way to access objects and create a playlist or sequence. | Depends on the encoder and YouTube ingestion protocol you configure. | Requires implementation and ongoing operations. Calculate host runtime, storage, network transfer, and any transcoding costs for your workload and region. |
| Managed media pipeline | The service manages a defined media-processing workflow, but you still need to confirm how it connects to your source and destination and what recovery and monitoring it provides. | Integration varies. Google Cloud documents Cloud Storage as an output in its workflow, not a universal bucket-object-to-YouTube source connector. | Google Cloud Live Stream API accepts RTMP or SRT input and outputs HLS or DASH. YouTube ingestion choices and latency depend on the protocol. | Implementation and total charges depend on service configuration, runtime, region, storage, network, and transcoding. No directly comparable all-in cost for this specific workload is established in the cited documentation. |
Neither approach is automatically a complete 24/7 service. Verify that the selected components can read your bucket, maintain the intended sequence, deliver to YouTube, and recover from failures. The official documentation does not establish one provider-independent bucket connector or guarantee uninterrupted operation.

Build a self-managed bucket-to-YouTube stream
The steps below describe the work, not a universal copy-and-paste command: the bucket integration, media library, encoder, and cloud environment determine the exact configuration. FFmpeg documents support for regular files, pipes, and network streams, and its FAQ covers concatenating files; it does not provide one complete recipe for every bucket and 24/7 YouTube deployment. Consult the FFmpeg documentation and FFmpeg FAQ for the options that match your media and integration.
- Provision a persistent encoder environment. Use a machine or service that remains available for the intended broadcast. Confirm it has sufficient access to the bucket and can sustain the chosen read, encode, and upload workload.
- Configure bucket access. Choose the cloud provider’s supported object access method, such as downloading files to the encoder or using a compatible connector. Keep credentials restricted to the objects and operations the encoder needs. There is no single connector or mount procedure that applies to every provider.
- Prepare and validate the playlist. Specify the files in playback order and test the sequence, including the transition from the last item back to the first. If the media is not compatible as a sequence, use an approach that normalizes it. FFmpeg’s FAQ recommends the concat filter when re-encoding is needed and describes the concat demuxer for cases where re-encoding can be avoided. Check actual files for matching codecs, dimensions, frame rates, timestamps, and audio layouts rather than assuming they will join cleanly.
- Create or configure the YouTube live stream. Select an ingestion protocol supported by your encoder and obtain the corresponding ingestion address and stream name/key from YouTube’s live-stream configuration. The YouTube LiveStreams API documents ingestion types, addresses, and stream status/health information. Treat the stream key as a secret: do not put it in public scripts, logs, or source code.
- Configure output for the chosen protocol. Match the encoder’s output to the selected YouTube ingestion requirements, then test with the real source media and account before relying on it continuously. Protocol-specific requirements matter; do not substitute generic segment or transport settings for YouTube’s current instructions.
- Run under supervision. Arrange for the encoder process to restart or alert an operator if it exits. Monitor logs and YouTube stream health for delivery problems, and verify that recovery restores the intended playlist rather than leaving the stream stopped or stuck.
- Test the full loop before leaving it unattended. Confirm that the stream starts, the playlist advances, audio and video remain synchronized, the final item loops correctly, and a deliberate encoder restart recovers as expected.
Select RTMP, HLS, or another supported ingestion path
The YouTube LiveStreams API documents RTMP/RTMPS, HLS, and DASH ingestion types. Choose a path your encoder or pipeline supports, then follow the corresponding current YouTube configuration requirements. HLS is more prescriptive than a continuous RTMP feed and can add latency because it transmits segments.

YouTube HLS-specific requirements
- YouTube’s HLS setup calls for MPEG-2 TS segments lasting 1–4 seconds.
- Send segments using HTTPS POST or PUT; byte-range delivery is not supported in the described setup.
- Use a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments.
These requirements are described in YouTube’s HLS setup guidance and HLS ingestion guide. The latter says each media segment represents a brief portion of the stream lasting between one and four seconds. Check the current guidance when configuring a production feed, since protocol requirements can change.
Keep a 24/7 stream healthy
Continuous streaming is an operations task as well as a media pipeline. YouTube exposes stream status and health information through its API; documented delivery issues include low bitrate, frame-rate mismatch, and missing audio. That information can help diagnose a problem, but it is not an uptime guarantee.

- Test recovery after a network interruption or encoder restart, including whether the playlist resumes at the intended point.
- Review storage access and credentials before they expire or change, and verify the source files remain available.
- Check the stream periodically for stalled playback, missing audio, or a sequence that failed to loop.
Plan costs around the actual workload
A bucket-to-live setup can involve separate charges for storage, object reads or downloads, compute runtime, transcoding, and network transfer. The total depends on your region, media bitrate, viewing and egress pattern, runtime, and whether you transcode. Google Cloud’s cited documentation does not provide a directly comparable all-in price for this particular 24/7 YouTube workload. Estimate each component using the provider’s current pricing and your expected usage rather than treating storage alone as the total cost.
