You can use cron to launch FFmpeg on a Linux VPS at a planned time and send a prerecorded file to a scheduled YouTube Live event. Cron starts the encoder; it does not necessarily make the event public. In YouTube’s documented Studio workflow, you start the encoder, wait for its preview in Live Control Room, then click Go live. Test the whole chain before relying on unattended operation.
What cron can—and cannot—automate
A YouTube Live event and its encoder feed are separate parts of the process. In YouTube Studio, create or schedule the event and retrieve its ingest URL and stream key. FFmpeg then sends the media to that endpoint. A cron job can start FFmpeg at a chosen time, but a running FFmpeg process alone does not prove that viewers can see a public broadcast. YouTube’s scheduled-stream instructions include waiting for the encoder preview and selecting Go live in Live Control Room. YouTube’s encoder setup guide describes this flow.
If you need the Go live step to happen without a person, treat that as a separate YouTube Live Streaming API implementation. The API exposes broadcast and stream resources, but requires its own authentication and state management; it is not an extra cron option. See Google’s broadcasts and streams overview.
Before you schedule the VPS job
Enable live streaming on the channel
If this is the channel’s first live stream, enable live streaming in YouTube Studio in advance. YouTube says first-time enablement may take up to 24 hours, so do not leave activation until the event day. Review YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility and setup guidance.

Prepare the event
In YouTube Studio, create or schedule a live stream, set its visibility and event details, and note the scheduled start time. Scheduling creates a watch page that you can share and lets viewers set reminders. For an initial check, use a private or unlisted test event rather than relying on a public launch.
Protect the stream key
Copy the ingest URL and stream key shown for the event. Treat the key like a password: store it in a configuration file readable only by the account that runs FFmpeg, or another protected environment source. Do not put it in a public repository, a cron line, shell history, screenshots, or broadly accessible logs. If it is exposed, replace or rotate it in YouTube Studio before using it again.

Choose playback and encoding behavior
Play once or loop
For a one-time event, send the file once and let the feed end when playback finishes. To repeat a file continuously, FFmpeg documents -stream_loop -1 for infinite input looping. Put input options before the relevant input. The -re option reads the input at its native frame rate (equivalent to -readrate 1); without real-time pacing, a file can be read as fast as possible rather than played out over its duration. Consult the FFmpeg documentation for the version installed on your VPS.
Copy the source streams or transcode
Stream copying avoids re-encoding when the file’s video and audio codecs, timestamps, frame rate, and container are compatible with the ingest settings. Transcoding can change codecs, resolution, frame rate, or bitrate, but uses CPU on the VPS. Inspect the file and confirm both its streams and output settings before choosing; there is no single VPS size that fits every source file and workload.

Match YouTube’s current ingest recommendations
YouTube recommends RTMPS where supported. Its published encoder guidance includes H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 options depending on configuration; frame rates up to 60 fps; AAC or MP3 audio; and CBR bitrate encoding. YouTube recommends a 2-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed 4 seconds. Select the bitrate for the actual resolution and frame rate using the current table, rather than borrowing a figure for a different output. Check YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrate, and resolution guidance before configuring FFmpeg.
Build an FFmpeg command for the event
The following is a command shape, not a turnkey command tested against every FFmpeg build or YouTube endpoint. Replace the placeholders with the exact input path, output settings, and URL/path form supplied by Studio. Do not paste a real stream key into shared documentation or logs.

ffmpeg -nostdin -re -i /absolute/path/video.mp4 [output options] -f flv 'rtmps://INGEST_URL/STREAM_KEY'
Use the output options appropriate to your source and YouTube’s current requirements. If looping is intended, add -stream_loop -1 before the relevant -i, for example: ffmpeg -nostdin -stream_loop -1 -re -i /absolute/path/video.mp4 [output options] -f flv 'rtmps://INGEST_URL/STREAM_KEY'. Omit the loop option for a one-shot event. The example shows the shape only: confirm the exact ingest endpoint from Studio and verify options against your installed FFmpeg release. FFmpeg’s FAQ recommends -nostdin for background tasks so the process does not wait for console input; see the FFmpeg FAQ.

Schedule the launch with cron
Use a small script rather than putting the command and secret directly into the crontab. Give the script an explicit working directory, use absolute paths for FFmpeg and media, and write output to a log location with a retention or rotation policy. Restrict the script and its secret configuration file to the service account that needs them.
- Create the launch script. Have it load protected settings, change to the intended working directory, and invoke FFmpeg with the command options you tested. Keep the stream key out of the script if it can instead be read securely from a restricted configuration source.
- Test as the scheduled account. Run the script manually as the same user cron will use. Confirm that the file is readable, the endpoint connects, and logs capture useful errors without exposing the key.
- Add a cron entry for the intended time. Invoke the script by absolute path and direct standard output and errors to your chosen log. Cron implementations and their environment differ; validate the schedule syntax for your VPS operating system and provider. Do not assume an interactive shell’s PATH or working directory will be present.
- Prevent overlapping launches. Ensure a delayed or still-running prior job cannot start a second copy for the same event. The mechanism depends on your operating system and deployment; test it rather than assuming cron prevents overlap.
- Test under cron conditions. Run a private or unlisted event and verify the scheduled launch, logs, preview, audio, aspect ratio, and the Studio Go live step. A job that works in an interactive terminal may fail with cron’s reduced environment.
For a single scheduled launch, cron may be sufficient. If you also need a process supervisor to recover a failed encoder, configure it carefully: an automatic restart should not silently continue a planned event after it was meant to end or turn a one-time broadcast into unintended continuous streaming.
Verify the broadcast and finish cleanly
- At the scheduled time, check that the cron-launched FFmpeg process started and inspect its logs for connection or encoding errors.
- Open the scheduled event in Live Control Room. Wait for the encoder preview and check video, audio, and framing.
- Select Go live when the preview is ready if the event has not already been made live through a separately implemented API workflow. Confirm the event’s live state in Studio; process status alone is not enough.
- When the event should end, stop the encoder feed deliberately and check the finished stream in Studio. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; do not assume the same archive outcome for broadcasts lasting 12 hours or longer. The archive guidance is in YouTube’s encoder guide.
Common problems and fixes
- The encoder runs, but the event is not live: A scheduled event may be waiting for the encoder preview and the Studio Go live action. Check Live Control Room and confirm the event state instead of relying on the VPS process.
- The stream will not connect: Check that the URL and key match the event, the key has not been replaced, and the endpoint uses the exact format Studio supplied. Prefer RTMPS where supported. Keep the key private while troubleshooting.
- Video or audio is rejected, missing, or unreliable: Inspect the input’s codecs and stream properties, then compare the chosen output codec, audio codec, frame rate, keyframe interval, bitrate mode, and resolution against YouTube’s current encoder settings. Do not assume a file’s existing streams are accepted unchanged.
- The video finishes too quickly: Confirm that real-time pacing is enabled with
-re. If repeat playback is intended, add-stream_loop -1before the corresponding input; otherwise the file is expected to play once. - The job works manually but not on schedule: Use absolute paths, set the working directory explicitly, and check cron’s user, environment, schedule syntax, permissions, and logs on that specific VPS system.
- The VPS cannot sustain the output: Check available disk space, network egress and bandwidth limits, CPU use during transcoding, and whether the file remains available throughout the run. Resource needs depend on the source and selected encoding; there is no universal VPS size established here.
- A restart creates an unwanted second run: Review any supervisor or retry policy against the planned event end time and add protection against overlapping launches.
