You can use a Google Cloud virtual machine (VM) to run an encoder that sends a continuous audio-and-visual feed to YouTube Live. The VM plays or generates your source, while the encoder sends it to YouTube using the stream URL and key from YouTube Studio. This keeps the broadcast from depending on your home computer, but you still need to manage recovery, monitoring, music rights, and cloud costs.
What a Google Cloud VM does—and what it does not do
A VM is a remote computer. For a music radio stream, it can run an encoder, read your audio and visual source, and send the resulting feed to YouTube Live. YouTube receives the feed; it does not make the VM, encoder, or source self-maintaining.
You remain responsible for starting the encoder after a failure or VM restart, checking that the source is playing, monitoring YouTube’s stream health, managing storage and network use, and paying for the cloud resources. Google Cloud startup scripts can run when a VM boots, but a boot script alone does not monitor every failure or confirm that viewers can see and hear the stream. - Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Choose the VM for your actual workload
For an audio stream with a still image, the VM’s work is usually playback and encoding, not complex video production. Choose a machine based on the encoder, how the source is prepared, and any other processes you plan to run. There is no universal VM size established for this setup, so avoid treating a particular machine type as a guaranteed requirement.
Estimate the full cloud bill
Price the VM for the region and machine type you select, then account separately for persistent disk and network transfer. Google says VM pricing varies by configuration and region and does not include disk or networking. Network bandwidth limits also vary by machine and destination; a published maximum is not a promise of the bandwidth your instance will actually achieve. Use the Compute Engine pricing page, the network bandwidth documentation, and Google Cloud’s calculator with your expected outbound data transfer. There is no single monthly price that applies to every 24/7 stream.

Set up and test the YouTube stream
- Prepare a continuous source. Use music you created or have permission to broadcast. Pair it with a still image or looping visual if suitable. Decide how playback should move from one track or file to the next, and what the encoder should do if a source file becomes unavailable. Test the playback chain rather than assuming a playlist will loop correctly.
- Create the broadcast in YouTube Studio. Open Go Live in YouTube Studio, then create or schedule a stream. Copy the stream URL and stream key from the Live Control Room into the encoder’s stream settings. Treat the key like a password: restrict access, and reset it in Live Control Room if it is exposed. YouTube’s encoder setup guide
- Configure the encoder for YouTube ingest. YouTube recommends RTMPS, which encrypts the stream connection in transit. Use a supported codec and a stable bitrate appropriate to your intended resolution and frame rate. For a static visual, do not choose a high-motion video profile automatically; pick settings that match the feed and available network capacity. YouTube’s current guidance recommends a two-second keyframe interval, with four seconds as the maximum recommended interval. For stereo audio, its advanced settings recommend 44.1 kHz sampling and 128 kbps; these are recommendations, not minimum requirements. Check the current encoder settings, bitrate, and resolution guidance for the codec and output profile you use.
- Start with an unlisted test. Send a representative feed, including the audio and any motion in the visual, and inspect the Live Control Room preview and stream-health messages. Confirm that audio is continuous, the image is present, and the encoder remains connected before scheduling or making the stream public. YouTube advises testing and monitoring stream health. YouTube’s encoder setup guide
Keep the encoder running after failures and restarts
Plan for two distinct recovery cases: the encoder process can stop while the VM remains on, or the VM can reboot. Configure a service manager or supervisor to restart the encoder after a process failure, and configure a boot-time mechanism to launch it after a VM boot. Google startup scripts run when a VM boots and their output can be monitored. Because a startup script runs as root, protect the script, its files, and any credentials it can access. Google Cloud’s startup-script documentation
Recovery is not the same as monitoring. Check encoder status, source playback, disk use, VM and network health, and YouTube’s stream-health indicators. Decide how you will learn about an interruption and what you will do if automatic recovery does not restore the feed. Do not assume a process restart proves the YouTube broadcast has resumed correctly.

Plan around YouTube’s 12-hour archive threshold
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. For a continuous channel, plan stream-session rotation before the broadcast reaches that threshold, and allow for a brief handoff or restart. Verify the behavior of your chosen stream settings and channel before relying on a particular rotation method. YouTube’s encoder setup guide
Music rights apply even when the stream runs in the cloud
YouTube’s livestream terms place responsibility on the content provider to have the necessary rights for worldwide use of live content, including music licensing rights involving artists, record labels, publishers, and other royalty participants. A consumer music subscription should not be treated as permission to broadcast unless its terms explicitly allow that use. Keep records of permissions or licenses for each track, territory, and relevant use; if the rights are unclear, leave the track out.

- The encoder cannot connect: confirm that the server URL and key were copied correctly, the key is still valid, and the encoder is configured for the selected ingest protocol. Reset an exposed key in Live Control Room.
- YouTube reports poor stream health: review the encoder’s bitrate and output profile against YouTube’s guidance, then check the VM’s available network capacity and outbound transfer path. A published bandwidth maximum does not guarantee the throughput of a particular VM. YouTube encoder guidance · Google Cloud bandwidth documentation
- The stream stops when a track ends: check the source or playlist’s end-of-file behavior and whether the encoder receives continuous input. Test transitions and missing-file behavior before relying on unattended playback.
- The encoder does not return after a crash or reboot: check the supervisor or service-manager logs and the VM startup-script output, then confirm that the encoder process is running and has the correct source and stream settings. Google Cloud startup scripts
- The stream ends near 12 hours: check whether the session reached YouTube’s archive threshold and review your planned rotation or handoff. Do not rely on a continuous session without validating its behavior. YouTube’s encoder setup guide
- The monthly bill is higher than expected: review VM runtime, disk charges, region and machine selection, and network egress separately. Recalculate with the actual data-transfer destination and usage. Compute Engine pricing
