To use a compatible GoPro as a webcam for YouTube Live, connect it to your computer by USB-C, complete GoPro’s webcam setup for your camera and operating system, then select it in YouTube’s webcam livestream flow. For the documented HERO10 Black setup, webcam mode is the camera’s default mode and the manual directs you to use the included USB-C cable. A capture card is not inherently required for this basic USB webcam route.
Check your GoPro, computer, and YouTube channel
Start with the exact GoPro model and your computer’s operating system. Webcam app support varies by platform, so confirm GoPro’s current setup instructions and app requirements for both before relying on model-specific download steps.
GoPro’s Mac App Store listing names HERO8 Black and newer as supported, including HERO8, HERO9, HERO10, HERO11, and HERO12 Black, while excluding HERO11 Mini and MAX. That listing applies to macOS; do not treat it as a compatibility promise for Windows or other systems. Check GoPro Webcam App’s Mac App Store listing.
YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. The account holder must be at least 16 to livestream. Check YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance if you have not streamed before or the option is unavailable.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Set up the GoPro as a USB webcam
- Connect the camera. For the HERO10 Black route documented in its manual, connect the camera to the computer with the included USB-C cable. The manual describes webcam mode as the default mode, but both the GoPro and computer still need to be set up for webcam use. See the HERO10 Black User Manual, under “Using Your GoPro as a Webcam.”
- Complete GoPro’s computer setup. Follow GoPro’s current webcam instructions for your camera and operating system. The HERO10 manual points readers to gopro.com/webcam; available software and exact steps can differ by platform and version.
- Confirm the camera is available to the computer. Once setup is complete, look for the GoPro in the camera choices of the app or browser you plan to use. If it is missing, check the connection and operating-system support before moving on.
The manual’s USB-C direction refers to the included cable. A replacement data-capable USB-C cable is relevant only if the included one is missing or faulty; it is not an additional required purchase.
Start a YouTube livestream using the webcam flow
- Sign in to the eligible YouTube channel and open Create > Go Live > Webcam.
- Enter the stream title and description, then select the intended privacy setting.
- Choose the GoPro in the camera selector and select the microphone you actually want to use. Do not assume the camera selection also chooses the correct audio input.
- Review the preview, framing, and audio, then click Go Live when ready.
YouTube’s webcam help page lists Chrome 60+ and Firefox 53+ as compatible browsers. Those version numbers are the compatibility information published on its maintained help page; check the page for current guidance if your browser behaves differently. See Create a live stream via webcam.

Rehearse and check the stream before viewers arrive
YouTube recommends testing ahead of the event and monitoring audio and video quality. Its guidance says to leave 20% upload-bandwidth headroom beyond the stream bitrate. For example, if your chosen stream bitrate is B, the connection should have capacity beyond B rather than being fully consumed by the stream. This is headroom guidance, not a fixed bitrate recommendation. Read YouTube’s streaming tips.
- Check that the GoPro framing shows what you intend and that focus and exposure are suitable.
- Speak or make a test sound and confirm the selected microphone is the source heard in the preview.
- Watch the YouTube preview for video and audio problems before making a public event live.
- Use a private or unlisted test where appropriate, then set the intended privacy level for the actual broadcast.
USB webcam mode or an encoder workflow?
| Workflow | What it involves | When it fits |
|---|---|---|
| USB webcam mode | Connect a compatible GoPro to the computer by USB-C and complete the camera and computer webcam setup. | A straightforward route when your model and operating system support GoPro webcam mode. The HERO10 manual documents this approach. |
| Encoder or capture workflow | Route external video or audio hardware through streaming software or a hardware encoder. | Useful for external audio/video hardware or more advanced production controls, as described in YouTube’s encoder guidance. It is a different, more involved setup; the reviewed sources do not establish that HDMI is required or that it produces a better image for every GoPro. |
YouTube describes encoder workflows as an option for external hardware and advanced productions. The exact GoPro HDMI accessories and compatibility depend on camera model and were not established here, so verify them against current model-specific GoPro guidance before buying equipment. GoPro’s separate instructions for starting a livestream in the Quik app describe another workflow; they are not the same as using the GoPro as a computer webcam. See GoPro’s live-streaming overview.

Troubleshoot common setup problems
The GoPro does not appear as a camera
- Confirm the exact model and operating system are supported by the current GoPro webcam instructions; the Mac App Store listing is not a universal platform compatibility list.
- Check that the camera is connected by USB-C and that the webcam setup has been completed on both camera and computer.
- If you are using a replacement cable, make sure it supports data rather than charging only.
YouTube does not offer the webcam livestream option
Check that the channel is verified, has no live-streaming restrictions from the previous 90 days, and meets YouTube’s age requirement for the account holder. YouTube’s eligibility page is the authority for account-specific conditions.
The preview has no sound or the wrong sound
Reopen YouTube’s microphone selector and choose the intended input explicitly. Check the preview with a test sound before going live; camera selection and microphone selection are separate choices in the webcam flow.

The stream stutters or loses quality
Check available upload capacity and preserve the 20% headroom YouTube recommends beyond the stream bitrate. Test before the event and monitor the preview rather than assuming a connection that works for browsing is sufficient for a livestream.
