To use a green screen on a YouTube livestream, add your camera to an OBS scene, apply OBS’s Chroma Key filter to remove the green, and put your replacement background underneath the camera source. Then send the composed scene to YouTube through an encoder stream and check the Live Control Room preview before going live. The backdrop alone does not create the effect: the chroma key and background composition happen in software.
Choose webcam streaming or an encoder
YouTube offers two routes. Direct webcam streaming is a simpler option for a computer-and-webcam broadcast. For a gaming stream where you want to combine gameplay, a camera, overlays, or external video hardware, use an encoder such as OBS. YouTube describes those as encoder use cases in its live streaming tips and encoder setup instructions.
This guide uses OBS and the encoder route so you can compose the camera over gameplay or another background. YouTube also notes that you do not need expensive equipment; start with what you have and add gear only if your setup needs it.
Set up the camera and green backdrop
- Frame the shot. Position a physical green backdrop so it fills the area behind you visible to the camera. Check the camera preview and adjust the backdrop or your framing if the captured green varies noticeably.
- Use a camera source. Add your webcam or other camera in OBS. If you do not have a camera, YouTube supports streaming directly from a computer webcam; a camera is needed for the presenter-on-screen effect described here.
- Check the image before keying. OBS removes a selected color from the camera source, so inconsistent-looking green can make it harder to get a clean result. There is no universal backdrop size, camera distance, fabric, or lighting layout established by the official guidance; judge the result in your own preview.
A green backdrop is useful because OBS can key out its color, but it does not replace the camera or the software effect. YouTube mentions a green screen as optional gear for gamers, not as a requirement for livestreaming.

Apply OBS Chroma Key to the camera
- Add the camera to a scene. In OBS, select the scene for your stream, add the camera as a source, and confirm its image appears in the preview.
- Open the source filters. Open the camera source’s filters and add the Chroma Key filter. OBS documents this filter for Windows, macOS, and Linux. Start with green as the key color.
- Tune against the preview. Adjust the filter while watching both the background area and the edges of your face, hair, and clothing. OBS’s documented defaults are Similarity 400, Smoothness 80, and Key Color Spill Reduction 100; these are defaults, not guaranteed best settings for your camera or backdrop.
OBS describes Chroma Key as removing instances of a selected color from a source, with controls to avoid removing too much. The main controls are:
- Similarity: Higher values remove more pixels close to the key color. Increase it cautiously: too much can erase parts of you or other details meant to remain.
- Smoothness: Softens the edge of the keyed area. Adjust it to reduce harsh outlines without making the subject look blurred or cut out.
- Key Color Spill Reduction: Targets traces of green around the subject’s edges, such as a green cast near hair.
- Key Color Type: Selects the color to key, such as green.
- Opacity, Contrast, and Brightness: Additional controls documented by OBS for refining the filter’s result. Adjust only if the preview shows a problem they can address.
Do not maximize every control. A stronger key can clear more green but can also remove the subject; tune until the background is transparent and the subject remains intact.
Put a replacement background under the keyed camera
Add the background you want—such as gameplay, an image, video, or another scene—as a source in the same OBS scene. Arrange the source order so the keyed camera appears above it. The removed green areas are transparent, allowing the source underneath to show through. Resize and position the camera so it does not obscure important gameplay or overlays.

Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- Enable live streaming ahead of time. In YouTube Studio, create or select a live stream that uses an encoder. If this is your first time enabling live streaming, YouTube says activation may take up to 24 hours, so do not leave setup until broadcast time.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key. YouTube provides these for the encoder stream. Treat the key as private: YouTube describes it as the credential/address that tells your encoder where to send the feed.
- Enter the connection details in OBS. Open OBS’s stream settings, select YouTube if available, and enter the server URL and stream key provided for your YouTube stream. Do not share the key or show it on screen.
- Start the encoder and check YouTube’s preview. Start streaming from OBS. Wait for the feed to appear in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, check the composed image and sound, and then select Go live in YouTube when ready.
For YouTube’s current H.264 recommendations, the figures below are recommended bitrates—not universal minimums or guarantees of quality. The right choice depends on resolution, frame rate, codec, and the upload capacity you can sustain. YouTube recommends testing your connection and stream.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
| Output | YouTube-recommended H.264 bitrate |
|---|---|
| 720p at 30 fps | 8 Mbps |
| 720p at 60 fps | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p at 30 fps | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s H.264 recommendations in its encoder settings and bitrate guidance, accessed in 2026. Do not apply the H.264 figures to AV1 or H.265; YouTube lists codec-specific settings separately. For example, its H.264 minimums are 5 Mbps for 1080p30 and 6 Mbps for 1080p60, below the recommended rates shown above.
Test the whole scene before a public broadcast
Run a test with audio and movement similar to the planned stream. YouTube advises monitoring stream health and messages, not just checking that the encoder has connected.

- Move and speak as you will during the broadcast; check that the camera stays framed and the keyed edges hold up.
- Confirm the replacement background appears through the keyed area and that gameplay, overlays, and camera are composed as intended.
- Listen for clear audio and check that movement does not expose parts of the backdrop outside the camera frame.
- Watch YouTube’s preview, stream health, and messages for connection or output issues before selecting Go live.
If the image is not clean, adjust the captured scene or the OBS filter and test again. YouTube’s advice to test with similar audio and movement is in its computer livestream tips.

Green remains visible
Check that the Chroma Key filter is applied to the camera source and that the selected key color matches the backdrop. Inspect the camera preview for visibly inconsistent green, then adjust Similarity carefully. Increasing Similarity removes more near-green pixels, but can also remove parts of the subject.
Parts of the presenter disappear
Similarity may be too high, especially where clothing, hair, or an object resembles the key color. Reduce it until those details return, then refine the edge with Smoothness rather than aggressively expanding the key.

A green outline remains around hair or clothing
Use Key Color Spill Reduction to target color traces at the edge. Check the result in motion as well as in a still preview; movement can reveal edge problems a stationary pose does not.
The background is missing
Confirm the replacement background is in the same OBS scene and sits below the keyed camera in the source order. The key creates transparent areas; it does not supply a background on its own.
YouTube does not show a preview
Check that OBS is sending to the correct YouTube stream URL and that you copied the matching stream key. Confirm the encoder is running and allow the Live Control Room to receive the feed. If live streaming was only just enabled on the account, activation can take up to 24 hours.

The stream looks unstable at the chosen output
Choose a resolution, frame rate, and bitrate your upload connection can sustain reliably. YouTube’s bitrate recommendations are not a guarantee that a particular connection will hold; run a test and monitor stream health and messages.
Or let it run in the cloud
For a camera-and-gameplay broadcast, OBS is the relevant compositing workflow above. StreamNeo serves a different need: it keeps uploaded videos looping as a YouTube livestream from the cloud, rather than going live from a camera. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it plays the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. See StreamNeo or its plan details, then start your free day.
