In most cases, you can’t connect a PS5 directly to a laptop with an HDMI cable. The PS5 sends video from its HDMI OUT port, and most laptops’ HDMI ports are also outputs—not inputs. To use a laptop screen, either stream the console with PS Remote Play or connect it to a USB HDMI capture card. For the most responsive gaming, use a TV or monitor instead.
Can you connect a PS5 to a laptop with HDMI?
Usually, no. An HDMI cable does not send video from the PS5 into a laptop just because both devices have HDMI ports. The PS5’s port is HDMI OUT, and most laptop HDMI ports send the laptop’s picture to an external display. Connecting two outputs gives the laptop nothing to display.
A laptop can accept the PS5 signal directly only if its manufacturer specifically lists an HDMI IN port. This is uncommon. Check the exact model’s specifications, user manual, and port diagram; the shape of the connector does not tell you whether it is an input or output. Sony explains what a computer HDMI input does in its HDMI input guidance.
A USB-C port or an ordinary HDMI-to-USB adapter does not automatically make a laptop an HDMI display. For HDMI input over USB, you need a capture card that explicitly has an HDMI input.

Choose how to put the PS5 picture on your laptop

Method 1: Use PS Remote Play (no capture card required)
Remote Play sends a compressed video stream from the PS5 to the laptop, rather than routing HDMI into the laptop. It is usually the simplest no-cost option if you already own both devices. Sony supports the app on Windows 10 (64-bit) and Windows 11, and on the macOS versions listed on its current requirements page, including macOS Tahoe. Check Sony’s current Remote Play requirements and setup for the latest operating-system compatibility.
What you need
- A PS5 with current system software and a PlayStation Network account.
- A laptop that meets the app’s requirements and has PS Remote Play installed.
- The same PlayStation account signed in on the console and in the app.
- A suitable network connection. Sony lists at least 5 Mbps upload and download, with 15 Mbps or higher recommended for the best performance on its PS5 support information. Faster service alone cannot guarantee low delay; Wi-Fi conditions, congestion, and the route between devices matter too.
- A DualSense controller connected to the laptop, preferably by USB or supported Bluetooth.
Enable Remote Play on the PS5
- On the PS5, open Settings.
- Select System, then Remote Play.
- Turn on Enable Remote Play.
If you want the laptop to wake the console from Rest Mode, also configure the PS5: go to Settings > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode, then enable Stay Connected to the Internet and Enable Turning on PS5 from Network.
Connect from the laptop
- Download and install PS Remote Play from Sony’s official page.
- Open the app, choose PS5, and sign in with the same PlayStation account as on the console.
- Let the app search for the console and connect. If automatic discovery fails, follow the app’s instructions for manual console registration.
- Connect the DualSense to the laptop and check that the app recognizes it.
- Play in the Remote Play window.
Sony recommends testing the connection at home before relying on Remote Play away from home. Away-from-home play also requires the PS5 to remain online and the networks at both ends to support a usable connection; it is not guaranteed on every network.

Remote Play troubleshooting
- The PS5 is not found: Confirm Remote Play is enabled, both devices are online, and you are using the same account. Try a local connection first.
- It works at home but not away: Check the PS5’s Rest Mode network settings and confirm the console is online. Public or restricted networks may prevent a connection.
- Video stutters or controls feel delayed: Use Ethernet where possible, reduce other network traffic, move closer to the router, and lower the Remote Play video quality. A fast internet plan does not remove local Wi-Fi congestion or network delay.
- The controller does not respond: Connect the DualSense directly to the laptop and check that it is recognized by Remote Play.
- The screen is black or disconnects: Restart the app and console, update system software, and test on the same local network.
Method 2: Use a USB HDMI capture card
A capture card accepts the PS5’s HDMI output and makes the video available to laptop software. It is the right route when you specifically need HDMI input on the laptop, or want to record or stream gameplay. It is not an ordinary HDMI adapter: the device must explicitly support capture and have an HDMI IN port.
What you need
- A USB capture card with HDMI input.
- One HDMI cable from the PS5 to the card. For passthrough to a TV or monitor, use a second HDMI cable from the card’s HDMI OUT.
- A USB connection that meets the card’s requirements. Some models require USB 3.0; a USB-C connector alone does not establish that a port has the required bandwidth.
- The card maker’s software or compatible capture software such as OBS.
Elgato’s Game Capture Neo PS5 setup guide, for example, specifies a USB 3.0-capable computer and two HDMI cables for a passthrough arrangement.
Connect and open the capture feed
PS5 HDMI OUT ── HDMI cable ──> Capture card HDMI IN
Capture card ── USB cable ──> Laptop
Capture card HDMI OUT ── second HDMI cable ──> TV or monitor (optional)- Connect the PS5’s HDMI OUT to the capture card’s HDMI IN.
- Connect the capture card to the laptop by USB.
- Open the capture app and select the card as the video and audio source.
- To use a separate TV or monitor, connect it to the card’s HDMI OUT. That port is for passthrough to a display—not for connecting to the laptop’s HDMI port.
- Open the capture preview on the laptop.
Turn off HDCP for gameplay capture
The PS5 enables HDCP by default. An HDCP-protected signal can prevent a capture card from showing or recording the picture, so a black screen may not mean the card is broken. To change this setting, first connect the PS5 directly to a TV or monitor, then open Settings > System > HDMI and turn Enable HDCP off. Reconnect the PS5 to the capture card. Elgato documents this limitation and menu path in its HDCP guidance.

This is for supported gameplay capture and display. Apps that require HDCP protection may not work while it is disabled; turn HDCP back on when you need protected video playback.

Remote Play delay varies with the network. Capture-card preview avoids that network stream from the PS5 to the laptop, but the picture still travels through the card and capture software before appearing in a window. Do not assume the preview is lag-free. Elgato, for example, advertises preview latency “as low as 30ms on capable setups” for the 4K S; that is a manufacturer claim for suitable setups, not a guarantee for every card, laptop, or app. The company separately describes supported HDMI passthrough as lag-free.
For competitive shooters, rhythm games, fighting games, or any game where timing matters, use a TV or monitor connected to the card’s HDMI passthrough—or, better yet, connect the PS5 directly to the display. The laptop preview is useful for viewing, recording, or casual play, but it is not the same as a direct monitor input.

Resolution, 120 Hz, HDR, and VRR: check the exact card
A capture card can have different limits for passthrough (what it forwards to a TV or monitor), capture (what it sends to the laptop), and preview (what the software window displays). A card might pass a high-refresh signal to a monitor while capturing at a lower resolution or frame rate. Your laptop screen’s own resolution and refresh rate also limit what you can see in the preview.
For example, Elgato lists the Game Capture Neo with up to 4K60 HDR passthrough and USB 3.0; the 4K S with up to 4K60 capture/passthrough in supported configurations, support up to 1080p240, VRR, and HDR10; and the 4K X with HDMI 2.1 and capture/passthrough up to 4K144 according to its product page. Those specifications apply to particular device and setup combinations, not every use of the device. See the Neo, 4K S, and 4K X specifications before buying. Elgato’s HD60 X page marks that model discontinued and points to newer alternatives, so do not assume it is a current default purchase: check its current product status.
Set the PS5 output to a mode supported by the specific capture card. An unsupported 4K120, HDR, or VRR combination can produce no signal. If you want high-refresh passthrough, check that the card, HDMI cables, display, laptop USB connection, and software all support the intended configuration. An HDMI 2.1 card is most relevant if you have a suitable high-refresh display or a PS5 Pro-class setup; it cannot upgrade a laptop panel that is limited to 1080p60.
Audio, headset, and microphone notes
With a capture card, game audio can travel with the HDMI signal into the laptop, but what you can hear or record depends on the card, capture software, operating system, and audio routing. Headsets and microphones may need separate setup, especially if you want party chat or separate recording tracks. Remote Play handles audio through its app, but headset and microphone behavior can differ from using a controller directly with the console. Check the relevant app and device documentation rather than assuming every headset works the same way in both setups.
Fix capture-card “no signal” or black screen
- Check HDMI direction: The PS5 goes to the card’s HDMI IN. If using a second display, the card’s HDMI OUT goes to that display.
- Check HDCP: Turn off Enable HDCP using Settings > System > HDMI while the PS5 is connected to a direct display.
- Check the app: Select the capture card as the video and audio source, and grant the software device access if prompted.
- Check the connection: Try a known-working HDMI cable and connect the USB cable to a port that meets the card’s requirements. Avoid an underpowered or bandwidth-limited hub while troubleshooting.
- Check the video mode: Temporarily choose a resolution, refresh rate, HDR, and VRR combination supported by the card.
- Update and retry: Check for capture software or firmware updates, then restart the software and PS5.
When to choose each option
- Choose Remote Play for a free, quick setup, occasional use, or gaming away from the TV when your network performs well and some streaming delay is acceptable.
- Choose a USB capture card if you need HDMI input on the laptop, want to record or stream, or already plan to use capture hardware. Buy a capture device with the input formats and USB support you need—not a generic display adapter.
- Choose a TV or monitor if low latency, competitive play, 4K, HDR, VRR, or high refresh rate matters more than using the laptop screen. A capture card’s passthrough can send video to a separate display, but playing through the laptop preview is a different experience.
As of the US product listings checked in August 2026, Elgato listed the Neo at $129.99, the 4K S at $159.99, and the 4K X at $249.99. Prices and availability can change, and these are examples rather than necessary purchases: Remote Play may be all you need. If comparing hardware, prioritize a stable laptop connection and software support for laptop-only preview; prioritize passthrough, resolution, refresh rate, HDR, and VRR if you will also play on a TV or monitor.
