Use FFmpeg’s concat demuxer to play video files in a defined order, and add -stream_loop -1 if you want the playlist to repeat. That playlist sets playback order—not a calendar start time. Create or schedule the broadcast in YouTube Live Control Room, then send FFmpeg’s output to the stream URL and key YouTube provides.
What the playlist does—and what it does not
An FFmpeg concat playlist is a plain-text script listing media files in playback order. The concat demuxer reads them sequentially as one input. It does not schedule a broadcast for a particular date or time, set YouTube event details, or start a YouTube event by itself.
- Playback order: the entries in the playlist file.
- Repeat behavior: FFmpeg’s
-stream_loopoption. - Broadcast scheduling and going live: YouTube Live Control Room.
Keep these as separate jobs: prepare the list, configure the encoder, and schedule or start the broadcast in YouTube.
Create the concat playlist
Save a text file such as playlist.ffconcat alongside the videos. Put the required header on the first line exactly as shown, with no byte-order mark, followed by one file entry per video:

Use paths relative to the directory where you run FFmpeg, or provide full paths. Quote paths containing spaces or special characters correctly for the concat format. The demuxer’s safe-path setting defaults to 1. The example command below uses -safe 0 to allow paths outside its restricted safe-path form; do this only when you trust the playlist and its paths. See the FFmpeg concat demuxer documentation.
Check that the files are compatible
The concat demuxer works best when every entry has matching streams and properties. FFmpeg’s documentation puts it plainly: “All files must have the same streams (same codecs, same time base, etc.).” Differences in codecs, time bases, stream layout, or duration information can cause errors, gaps, or artifacts. Do not assume transitions will be seamless; test the actual files with your FFmpeg build.

If the files differ, normalize them in advance to matching stream properties, or use the concat filter and re-encode. The filter is the more appropriate route when inputs need different processing; it requires more CPU and encoding configuration. FFmpeg’s FAQ describes the concat filter for cases where re-encoding is needed: FFmpeg FAQ: joining video files.
Configure FFmpeg to loop and send the stream
Replace the placeholders with your actual video bitrate, buffer size, keyframe interval, YouTube ingest destination, and stream key. This is a template, not a guaranteed copy-and-run command: encoder availability varies by FFmpeg build, and the right settings depend on the media and YouTube’s current guidance.

Understand the important options
-rereads the media at its native playback rate rather than sending it as fast as FFmpeg can process it.-stream_loop -1repeats the input indefinitely. It appears before-i playlist.ffconcatbecause FFmpeg options generally apply to the next input or output. See FFmpeg’s advanced options.-f concat -i playlist.ffconcatselects the concat demuxer and the playlist file.-safe 0relaxes concat path restrictions; use it only with a playlist you trust.-c:v libx264and-c:a aacencode video and audio. Your installed build must include the selected encoders.-preset veryfasttrades some compression efficiency for lower encoding load; the right preset depends on available CPU and your stream settings.-b:v,-maxrateand-bufsizegovern video rate control. Choose values that suit the output resolution and frame rate, and that your upload can sustain reliably.-gsets the keyframe interval in frames. Convert YouTube’s recommended two-second keyframe frequency into frames using your output frame rate—for example, at 30 fps, two seconds is 60 frames. YouTube says not to exceed four seconds.-b:a 128k -ar 44100set the example audio bitrate and sample rate. Confirm the audio stream is present and acceptable in YouTube’s preview.-f flvselects the output container used in this RTMP(S) example. Use the destination protocol and ingest address shown in YouTube Live Control Room.
YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe frequency, with a maximum of four seconds. Its recommendations are vendor guidance, not a guarantee that one setting fits every resolution or frame rate. Select an appropriate bitrate for the output and leave upload headroom. YouTube suggests 20% upload bandwidth headroom and advises testing before a live stream. Consult the current YouTube encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions and YouTube live encoder settings for current requirements.
When stream-copy may work
If all playlist entries already have matching codecs and stream properties, you may be able to avoid re-encoding by using stream-copy options such as -c copy. That is not always suitable for a live ingest, mixed media, or files with timing problems. Encoding with explicit output settings offers more control but uses processing resources. Test the selected method with the actual playlist rather than assuming either approach will work cleanly.

Schedule the YouTube broadcast and connect FFmpeg
- Create or schedule the event: in YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule the live stream. Set its event details and schedule there; the FFmpeg playlist does not set them.
- Get the encoder destination: copy the stream URL and stream key supplied in Live Control Room into the FFmpeg output destination. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it, commit it to a public repository, or share screenshots that reveal it.
- Start FFmpeg: run the command and watch its output for input, encoder, or connection errors. The stream key and destination are specific to the YouTube stream you configured.
- Check the incoming preview: confirm that the expected video and audio appear, and review YouTube’s stream-health indicators. Follow the scheduled-stream controls in Live Control Room to go live.
- End the broadcast deliberately: stop the encoder feed and use YouTube’s end-stream control as directed for the scheduled broadcast. Stopping FFmpeg and ending the YouTube event are related but distinct actions.
YouTube’s Live Control Room labels and flow can change. Check the current YouTube guidance for creating a live stream with an encoder while setting up the event.

- Confirm every playlist path exists, the header is the first line, and the entries are in the intended order.
- Play or inspect each file and check that its streams are compatible, or that your chosen filter and encoding settings handle differences.
- Verify that your installed FFmpeg build supports the chosen encoders.
- Check the stream URL and key in the command without exposing the key in logs or screenshots you share.
- Measure upload capacity and preserve the 20% headroom YouTube suggests for its live guidance.
- Confirm the preview has both audio and video and that YouTube reports acceptable stream health.
- Let the playlist reach a file boundary and, if looping, the end-to-start boundary. Look for stalls, timestamp jumps, missing audio, or visual artifacts.
Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
| FFmpeg cannot open the playlist or a listed file | Wrong working directory, misspelled path, quoting issue, or a path rejected by concat safety rules | Check the playlist location and each path. Quote special characters correctly. If you use -safe 0, restrict it to a playlist you trust. |
| Concat errors, broken transitions, gaps, or artifacts | Entries have different codecs, time bases, stream layouts, or inaccurate duration information | Inspect the media properties. Normalize the files to compatible streams or use the concat filter with re-encoding. Test the boundaries, not only the first clip. |
| FFmpeg reports an unavailable encoder | The installed build does not include the selected encoder | Check the encoders supported by that build and select an available encoder, or use a build that includes the encoder you intend to use. |
| YouTube does not receive the stream | Incorrect ingest URL, key, protocol, or network connection | Copy the current stream URL and key from Live Control Room, verify the destination syntax, and check FFmpeg’s connection messages. |
| Preview has no audio or video, or stream health is poor | Missing or incompatible media stream, wrong output settings, or insufficient upload capacity | Inspect the source streams and output configuration, confirm preview audio and video, and reduce bitrate if the connection cannot sustain it while maintaining YouTube’s suggested upload headroom. |
| The scheduled event is not live even though FFmpeg is sending | The encoder feed is running, but the event’s YouTube go-live step has not been completed | Check Live Control Room preview and follow its scheduled-stream controls to go live. |
Keep rights and stream continuity in view
A technically valid playlist is not permission to broadcast its contents. Use videos and audio you own or are authorized to stream, and review YouTube’s current copyright and live-stream rules before scheduling. A playlist that repeats indefinitely can also keep sending the same material; make sure the content and its use comply with YouTube policies. The concat file controls sequence, not rights clearance or event metadata.
