The original PS VR (PSVR1) can also be used, but only with unofficial software such as iVRy or Trinus, and its tracking and controller support are far less predictable. Identify your headset generation before buying cables or installing anything.
First, identify your PlayStation VR headset
| Headset | How to recognize it | PC support |
|---|---|---|
| Original PS VR (PSVR1) | Uses an external processor box, the older PlayStation Camera and PlayStation Move ecosystem on PlayStation. | No official Sony Windows mode. Requires third-party software. |
| PS VR2 (PSVR2) | Connects to a PS5 with one USB-C headset cable and uses PS VR2 Sense controllers. | Official Sony PC support through the PS VR2 PC adapter. |
The PS VR2 adapter is not a converter for the original headset. The two generations use different hardware and software.
How to use PS VR2 on a PC
PS VR2’s official PC mode is primarily a SteamVR experience. You need Steam, SteamVR, Sony’s free PlayStation VR2 App, the PC adapter, a separate DisplayPort 1.4 cable and Bluetooth for the Sense controllers. A PS5 is not required for the PC connection. Sony’s requirements and setup guidance are documented at PlayStation Support.
Check the PC requirements
| Component | Sony’s listed minimum |
|---|---|
| Operating system | Windows 10 64-bit or Windows 11 64-bit |
| Processor | Intel Core i5-7600 or AMD Ryzen 3 3100 |
| Memory | 8 GB RAM or more |
| NVIDIA graphics | GeForce GTX 1650 or later, with the specified NVIDIA architecture support |
| AMD graphics | Radeon RX 5500 XT or later, or Radeon RX 6500 XT or later |
| Video output | A dedicated standard DisplayPort or Mini DisplayPort output supporting DisplayPort 1.4 |
| USB | A direct USB 3.0 connection on the PC |
| Bluetooth | Bluetooth 4.0 or later, subject to adapter compatibility |
Sony recommends an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 or later, or an AMD Radeon RX 6600 XT or later, for better performance. Minimum specifications may start the software without delivering a comfortable frame rate.

- Stable Power Supply for Seamless Performance:The adapter delivers a regulated DC 5.1V output, guaranteeing a steady and reliable power source for PS VR2 when used with a PC. This stable power prevents device malfunctions, screen flickering, or performance degradation caused by insufficient or fluctuating voltage, ensuring uninterrupted and stable VR sessions.
- High‑Definition Transmission for Visual Immersion (Updated with 4K60Hz):Equipped with a DisplayPort (DP) interface, the adapter enables 4K resolution and 120Hz high‑refresh‑rate video transmission, fully leveraging the PS VR2’s display capabilities. The resulting visuals are crisp, vivid, and lifelike, greatly enhancing your sense of presence in virtual environments.
- Ultra‑Fast Response for Lag‑Free Interaction:Leveraging the USB 3.0 high‑speed interface, the adapter ensures rapid transmission of large data volumes. In VR applications, player inputs and sensor data from the headset and controllers are synchronized in real time, effectively reducing latency and delivering instant feedback – so every move feels natural and responsive.
The graphics card must provide the required dedicated DisplayPort output. DisplayPort carried over USB-C is not compatible with Sony’s adapter, so a laptop with USB-C or HDMI should not be assumed to work. Laptop support also depends on whether its video output is connected to the discrete GPU.
Gather the required hardware and software
- PS VR2 headset and PS VR2 PC adapter.
- A DisplayPort 1.4 cable, sold separately, running directly from the PC’s dedicated DisplayPort output to the adapter.
- USB 3.0 connection directly to the PC; avoid hubs and extension cables.
- Bluetooth 4.0 or later for the Sense controllers. Add a compatible Bluetooth adapter if the PC lacks suitable Bluetooth.
- Steam, SteamVR and the PlayStation VR2 App.
Sony announced a U.S. estimated launch MSRP of $59.99 for the adapter in 2024; that is not a verified August 2026 street price. Check current price and stock on the PlayStation Direct PS VR2 page.
Install Steam, SteamVR and the PlayStation VR2 App
- Install and sign in to Steam.
- Install SteamVR from Steam.
- Install the PlayStation VR2 App from its Steam page.
- Keep the app installed after setup. It provides firmware updates, headset settings and play-area configuration; Sony says it does not need to be opened manually every time after the initial setup.
Connect the adapter and headset in the correct order
- Close or suspend other VR software.
- Plug the PC adapter directly into a USB 3.0 port on the computer.
- Connect a DisplayPort 1.4 cable from the adapter to the dedicated DisplayPort output on the graphics card. Do not use the motherboard video output, a dock, hub or USB-C video path.
- Connect the adapter’s AC power supply.
- Connect the PS VR2 headset to the adapter’s USB-C headset port.
- Press the headset power button.
- Open the PlayStation VR2 App and follow its headset and adapter setup.
- Pair both Sense controllers over Bluetooth.
- Complete the play-area scan and calibration.
- Start SteamVR and confirm that the headset and controllers show as ready.
- Press the PS button on a Sense controller to open the SteamVR dashboard, then launch a compatible SteamVR game.
The cable path is PC USB 3.0 → adapter, PC dedicated DisplayPort 1.4 → adapter, adapter power → adapter, and adapter USB-C → PS VR2 headset.

Pair and track the Sense controllers
Bluetooth is mandatory for the PS VR2 Sense controllers. Sony notes that pairing and tracking vary with the Bluetooth adapter and nearby wireless devices. A failed pairing does not automatically mean the headset is defective.
- Use a known-compatible Bluetooth adapter with current Windows drivers.
- Temporarily remove or switch off unnecessary nearby Bluetooth devices.
- Keep the Bluetooth adapter away from USB 3.0 interference where practical.
- On a desktop, a rear motherboard USB 3.0-or-better port is a useful troubleshooting test, although it is not a universal Sony requirement.
- Re-pair the controllers and install firmware updates through the PlayStation VR2 App.
Improve poor performance
If a game stutters or drops frames, first lower SteamVR render resolution. Sony also lists disabling Motion Smoothing as a troubleshooting step. Close GPU-heavy background applications and verify that the game is using the discrete graphics card. An RTX 3060/RX 6600 XT-class GPU is a more realistic target than the minimum cards for demanding titles.
PS VR2 troubleshooting by symptom
| Symptom | Checks |
|---|---|
| Headset is not detected | Confirm headset power, adapter power, direct USB 3.0, direct DisplayPort 1.4 to the graphics card, cable seating, current GPU drivers and Sony’s requirements. Try another USB port and check the PlayStation VR2 App. Enable SteamVR Direct Mode if SteamVR is not recognizing the headset. |
| Controllers will not pair or track | Check Bluetooth compatibility, reduce nearby wireless devices, move the adapter away from USB 3.0 interference, re-pair and update firmware in the PlayStation VR2 App. |
| Black screen or no video | Use the graphics card’s DisplayPort output, not the motherboard. Do not use DisplayPort over USB-C, docks, hubs or signal converters. Reconnect the headset cable at both ends and reboot the PC and headset. |
| Game runs badly | Lower SteamVR render resolution, disable Motion Smoothing, close background GPU workloads and compare the system with Sony’s recommended GPU class. |
How to use the original PS VR on a PC
The original PS VR has no Sony-documented Windows PC mode comparable to PS VR2’s adapter workflow. PC use is unofficial and depends on software such as iVRy Driver for SteamVR or Trinus PSVR. Expect more calibration, incomplete controller support and game-by-game compatibility.

What you need
- Original PS VR headset and its processor box.
- The original USB and HDMI cables.
- A Windows PC with a suitable discrete GPU and a direct HDMI output.
- Steam and SteamVR.
- iVRy or Trinus PSVR.
- Separate controller and tracking hardware if you want more than basic headset orientation.
Recommended route: iVRy
iVRy is a third-party SteamVR driver for the original PS VR. Its Steam instructions require the processor box to connect directly to an HDMI port on the computer, not through an adapter, and say the PS VR should not be the primary display.
- Connect the processor box to the PC by USB.
- Connect the processor box’s HDMI input to the discrete GPU’s HDMI output.
- Connect the headset to the processor box.
- Connect the monitor directly to the computer, rather than routing it through the processor box’s TV output.
- Install SteamVR.
- Install iVRy’s PSVR driver from Steam and use Steam’s Launch button the first time so its required services and drivers install.
- Place the headset flat and facing forward during initial calibration.
- Start SteamVR and run SteamVR Room Setup. Choose Standing Only unless your tracking hardware supports room-scale operation.
- Test with a compatible title.
The retrieved Steam listing showed a $27.97 iVRy PSVR Premium Edition bundle price; verify the current driver or DLC checkout price before purchasing.

Trinus listed a €8.99 one-year license per Windows installation when its page was retrieved; that is a dated vendor price, not a guaranteed U.S. checkout amount.
Understand the original headset’s tracking limits
Displaying a SteamVR image does not mean you have a complete modern VR system. Separate these capabilities:
- Head tracking: reporting the headset’s orientation and, depending on the software and hardware, its position.
- Controller tracking: tracking hands or controllers independently of the headset.
- 6DoF room-scale tracking: allowing the headset and controllers to move naturally through a room.
The original headset alone does not provide a modern PC controller system. Depending on the game, you may need a gamepad, PlayStation Move controllers, a PlayStation Camera and a compatible tracking solution, plus additional third-party software. Many SteamVR games require tracked VR controllers and will not be comfortable or fully playable with only a headset and gamepad.

Original PS VR troubleshooting
- No detection: start Trinus before SteamVR, close stale SteamVR processes, check for PSVR Control in Device Manager and reinstall the relevant driver if it is missing. These are vendor troubleshooting steps, not guarantees.
- No image: verify that HDMI is connected to the discrete GPU, not the motherboard, and that the processor box and headset cables are fully seated.
- Monitor problems: connect the monitor directly to the PC; iVRy says the PS VR should not be the primary display.
- Red or distorted image: recheck HDMI and display arrangement, and use the correct side-by-side format where required. Trinus documents cases in which clicking the display can recover a red screen.
- Drift: place the headset level and facing forward during calibration, do not move it until calibration finishes, then use the available orientation-reset or drift-correction controls. Drift is generally more noticeable than on modern inside-out PC VR systems.
- Audio issues: recheck Windows playback-device selection and the processor-box connection after changing displays.
Is using PSVR on PC worth it?
PS VR2 is a sensible PC option if you already own the headset, have a compatible DisplayPort-equipped gaming PC and accept buying the adapter and cable. It provides the least experimental route into SteamVR, though PC features are not automatically identical to the PS5 experience.
Original PS VR is mainly worthwhile as a low-cost experiment when you already have the headset and processor box. iVRy is the more direct SteamVR route; Trinus is more appealing if non-VR game conversion interests you. Neither provides Sony support or guaranteed controller and game compatibility.
Do not buy an original PS VR solely as a cheap modern PC VR headset unless it is very inexpensive and you have budgeted for the tracking and controller hardware it may require. Once those parts and the troubleshooting time are included, a purpose-built PC VR headset can be the simpler purchase.
