Yes—a second-hand desktop can run a continuous YouTube podcast stream using OBS, but only if that particular PC, its cooling, power supply and internet connection can sustain your actual setup. Treat YouTube’s and OBS’s compatibility guidance as a starting point, not a 24/7 reliability guarantee: test the complete stream under sustained load, and plan how you will recover from outages.
What you need before you start
The setup has four parts: a desktop running OBS, your show’s video and audio sources, a stable internet connection with enough upload capacity, and a YouTube channel enabled for live streaming. A simple podcast visual and speech audio generally put less strain on a PC than a complex scene, but the result still depends on the machine’s hardware, encoder, cooling and condition.
- A suitable PC: Check its operating system, graphics adapter, storage, fans, cooling, ports and general condition. OBS’s published Windows baseline is Windows 10 or 11 and a DirectX 10.1-compatible GPU. That baseline is not a recommended used-PC specification or proof of streaming performance; OBS explicitly cautions that compatibility alone does not guarantee the computer can stream or record. - OBS Studio: Use the current version that supports the computer’s operating system, then test the exact scenes and sources you intend to use. CPU needs vary with resolution, frame rate, encoder and scene complexity.
- Audio and visuals: Prepare the microphone or program audio and a simple static visual, if that suits the show. Use only music, images and video you have the rights to use.
- Reliable connections: Use wired Ethernet if practical, and test the actual upload connection. A UPS can help during brief power interruptions, but the right capacity and runtime depend on your equipment and are not established by a generic recommendation.

Enable YouTube Live and connect OBS
- Check channel eligibility and enable live streaming in advance. YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-stream restrictions in the past 90 days. First-time enablement may take up to 24 hours, so do not leave it until the planned launch. See YouTube’s live-stream tips.
- Create a stream in YouTube Studio. Open the live control room, create or select the broadcast, and find the stream URL and stream key. YouTube’s encoder setup guide explains the connection process.
- Keep the stream key private. Enter it in OBS’s streaming settings along with the server URL. Anyone who obtains the key may be able to broadcast to your stream, so do not show it on screen or share it in public.
- Preview before going public. Start OBS, check the YouTube preview, confirm the correct audio and image, and make an unlisted test if appropriate. Monitor YouTube’s stream health as well as OBS’s status; a local “streaming” indicator does not by itself confirm viewers are receiving a healthy broadcast.
Configure OBS for a spoken-word stream
Run the Auto-Configuration Wizard
In OBS, choose Tools → Auto-Configuration Wizard and answer for streaming. Then confirm its suggested output on the actual PC. Keep the scene simple
Start with one scene containing only the sources the podcast needs: a still or modest visual, the intended microphone or program audio, and any essential overlay. Avoid adding animated backgrounds, multiple browser sources or effects unless the machine handles them in a sustained test. Hardware encoding can shift encoding work from the CPU to a GPU’s encoding component, but encoder availability and quality depend on the graphics hardware’s generation. Choose resolution, frame rate and bitrate together

These are YouTube platform recommendations, not a household internet-speed guarantee. Your upload connection must sustain the selected stream, and other devices or network activity can affect it. Test the connection and choose a quality it can maintain. A low-motion program may work at a lower resolution or bitrate, but test the result and watch stream health rather than assuming it will. Set the encoder’s keyframe interval and audio
YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. Its encoder settings allow up to 60 fps and list AAC or MP3 audio. For a podcast, prioritize intelligible, consistent speech; confirm the selected audio device and levels in OBS and in the YouTube preview. Test the whole setup before relying on it
- Build the real scene, connect the actual microphone or program audio, and select the output settings you intend to use.
- Run an unlisted or private test long enough to expose heat, dropped frames, audio problems and connection instability. A quick successful launch is not a sustained-load test.
- Watch OBS for encoding or connection problems and check YouTube’s stream health and preview. Listen for clipping, dropouts, unwanted noise and lip-sync issues.
- Test recovery: briefly simulate or observe what happens when the internet drops and returns, and when OBS is restarted. YouTube advises creators to test failover and monitor streams; do not assume a restart will restore the broadcast exactly as intended. YouTube live-streaming tips

For India-specific context, the National Informatics Centre lists 2–4 Mbps dedicated bandwidth per stream for its hired-agency webcast scenario. Plan for power, internet and PC failures
A 24/7 stream depends on more than OBS settings. A power cut stops an unprotected desktop; an ISP outage interrupts delivery; overheating, dust, an aging fan or a failing drive can stop the encoder. A UPS may bridge a short interruption, but no universal runtime or capacity can be specified without measuring the PC and network equipment. Test any backup arrangement under the real load.

Know what happens to a 24-hour broadcast and its content
Do not rely on an automatic archive of the entire day
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. A single 24-hour continuous broadcast falls outside that stated condition, so this guidance does not promise an automatic complete archive. If preserving the full program matters, plan separate broadcast segments or record locally, check that your PC has adequate storage, and verify YouTube’s current behavior before relying on an archive. Use cleared audio and visuals
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. It may replace the video with a placeholder, interrupt or terminate the broadcast, and may claim an archived stream after it ends. Having a license does not necessarily prevent a live interruption: the rights holder may need to allowlist your channel through Content ID. These considerations apply whether the program is live speech, music between segments or prerecorded material played as a stream. A continuous schedule does not grant rights to music or video, and using prerecorded material does not remove YouTube’s copyright checks.
