A playlist must be played by a separate software or hardware encoder—or by a cloud streaming service—which sends the video feed to YouTube using a stream URL and stream key.
Can you stream a YouTube playlist directly on YouTube Live?
Not through a documented playlist-to-live control in YouTube Studio. A YouTube playlist is an ordered collection of videos; a live broadcast is fed to YouTube by an encoder. YouTube describes an encoder as converting video into a digital format for streaming. In practice, your playback-and-encoding setup must play the lesson videos in order and send the resulting feed to a YouTube live event. YouTube’s encoder guidance includes a cloud-based tool category for 24/7 prerecorded video, but does not establish any particular service’s current capabilities, reliability, or terms.
What you need before setting up the stream
- A livestream-enabled YouTube channel. YouTube says the channel must be verified and have had no live-stream restrictions in the previous 90 days. First-time activation can take up to 24 hours, and streamers must be at least 16 years old. Enable streaming well before the planned start.
- A playback-and-encoding route. Use software on a computer, standalone encoder hardware, or a cloud service. The chosen setup must be able to play your prerecorded lessons and provide an encoder feed to YouTube.
- Permission to use every lesson and asset. Confirm that you have the rights to stream the video, music, images, and other included material. YouTube’s copyright rules still apply to prerecorded content; a playlist or educational purpose does not itself grant permission.
- A plan for monitoring and replay. Decide who will check the live feed and how you will preserve or publish lesson recordings. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; that does not establish that one 24/7 broadcast will become one complete archive.
Set up a 24/7 lesson stream with a local encoder
- Prepare the lesson sequence. Arrange the videos in the order you want them played. Configure the playback software or encoder to repeat that sequence if looping is required. Test transitions and audio between lessons; the playlist must be played by your separate setup rather than selected as a native YouTube Live input.
- Create an encoder-based live event. In YouTube Studio, create or schedule a live stream using the encoder workflow. Follow the on-screen settings for the event and note when it is scheduled to start.
- Connect the encoder. Copy the event’s stream URL and stream key from YouTube Studio into the corresponding streaming settings in your encoder. Treat the stream key like a password: do not publish it or share it with people who do not need access. If it is exposed, reset it using YouTube’s stream-key controls and update the encoder with the replacement.
- Set output to match the source and verify encoder requirements. Choose a resolution and frame rate suitable for the lesson files and encoder, then check YouTube’s current encoder guidance for supported output settings. The cited guidance does not provide one universal bitrate or keyframe value for every resolution and frame rate, so do not assume a single setting is right for all setups. Keep the output consistent with the event and test it before the broadcast.
- Start a private test before the real session. Start playback and encoding, then check the preview in YouTube Live Control Room. Confirm that the correct event receives the feed, the video and audio are clear, and the intended live page is accessible to a viewer. Check the live health indicators while the test runs.
- Check the network and unattended operation. YouTube recommends keeping 20% upload-bandwidth headroom above the stream’s bitrate. Test the full playback loop and leave the computer, encoder, and network connection operating for a representative period. If you have configured a backup encoder, test failover rather than assuming it will work.
- Start the scheduled broadcast and monitor it. Confirm that the live event is actually receiving the feed and that lesson playback continues in sequence. For an unattended stream, establish who can respond to a playback, encoder, power, or network failure.
Choose between local and cloud operation
A local software or hardware encoder gives you direct control over the playback machine, but the computer or encoder and its network connection must remain available. A cloud service can take over playback and streaming without requiring your home computer to run continuously. Compare a service’s playlist handling, restart and recovery behavior, monitoring, stream-key handling, archive workflow, and recurring cost before relying on it. YouTube notes that listed encoder products are made by third parties, not YouTube; its guidance does not establish vendor-specific features, uptime, or pricing.

Troubleshoot common problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| No preview or no incoming feed | The event is not receiving the encoder feed, or the stream URL or key was entered incorrectly. | Compare the encoder’s URL and key with the values for the intended event in YouTube Studio. If the key may have been exposed, reset it and update the encoder. |
| Video or audio keeps stopping | Playback, encoder, power, or network interruption. | Check that the lesson sequence continues locally, inspect encoder and Live Control Room health, and verify the connection has YouTube’s recommended 20% upload headroom. |
| The wrong lesson plays or the sequence stops | The playback setup is not configured to use the intended order or repeat behavior. | Test the full sequence and its transitions before going live; confirm the playback software or cloud service is set to loop as intended. |
| Viewers cannot open the live page | The event’s availability or link may not match the intended audience. | Check the event settings in YouTube Studio and test access using the link and viewer permissions you plan to share. |
| The stream ends and there is no complete 24-hour replay | YouTube’s stated automatic archive rule covers streams under 12 hours, not a guaranteed single archive for a 24/7 session. | Check current archive behavior and plan shorter live sessions or a separate recording and publishing workflow if a complete replay is required. |
| Broadcast cannot be enabled on the channel | The channel may not meet livestream eligibility or activation is still processing. | Verify the channel and restrictions status, confirm the streamer meets YouTube’s age requirement, and allow up to 24 hours for first-time activation. |
Plan the archive separately from the live loop
YouTube states that streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That statement does not promise a single complete replay for a stream running continuously for 24 hours or longer. If viewers need lessons as individual replays, schedule shorter sessions or maintain a separate recording and upload workflow, then check the current archive behavior for your channel before relying on it.
