How to Use a YouTube Playlist for an Always-On Bhajan Stream

YouTube’s documented live workflow uses an encoder feed, not a playlist URL. Here’s how to loop authorized local bhajan files in OBS and send them to YouTube Live.

Short answer: YouTube’s official encoder guidance does not document a YouTube playlist URL as a supported input for a live stream. For a do-it-yourself setup, use an OBS playlist made from local media files you have permission to rebroadcast, then send OBS to YouTube Live with your stream key. A playlist being publicly watchable on YouTube does not by itself grant permission to rebroadcast it.

Can you use a YouTube playlist URL as the source?

YouTube’s documented encoder workflow is to send a live feed to YouTube using a server URL and stream key; it does not describe entering a YouTube playlist URL as the encoder’s media source. OBS documents looping a VLC playlist built from media files, not rebroadcasting a public YouTube playlist. Do not treat a playlist URL as an approved or supported source based on these workflows.

If you want to play bhajans continuously, the documented do-it-yourself route is to assemble authorized local audio or video files into an OBS VLC playlist and stream that feed. Confirm that your rights cover the live broadcast and any resulting archive.

Check channel eligibility and rights first

Confirm you can go live

YouTube’s current live-streaming help page, accessed October 3, 2026, says a channel must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. It also states that streamers must be at least 16 years old. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.

Clear every recording and visual

YouTube’s live-stream terms make the provider responsible for having the necessary rights for live content, including music licensing rights. Check permissions for each bhajan recording and any artwork, video, or other material you include. A song’s traditional or devotional status does not automatically establish that a particular recording is free to rebroadcast. Review the YouTube live-stream terms and YouTube’s guidance on avoiding live-stream restrictions.

Build a looping bhajan playlist in OBS

  1. Prepare authorized media files. Put the bhajan recordings and any accompanying visuals you are entitled to use in a folder on the streaming computer. Check playback and ordering before the broadcast. This workflow uses local files, not the YouTube playlist page.
  2. Install VLC and OBS. OBS’s VLC Video source requires VLC to be installed separately. For a 64-bit OBS installation, OBS specifies 64-bit VLC. See the OBS Project’s Media Sources documentation.
  3. Add the playlist source. In OBS, add a VLC Video source to the scene, then add the authorized media files to that source’s playlist. Enable Loop Playlist if you want playback to return to the beginning after the final item. OBS documents this as a playlist source for media files; it is distinct from the standard Media Source.
  4. Check the scene and audio. Confirm that the video fits the canvas and that audio is audible at a consistent level. Play the source through a full item change, and verify that the next file starts as expected. Avoid leaving unintended gaps or desktop notifications visible in the scene.
  5. Check the computer’s capacity. OBS warns that meeting its minimum system requirements does not guarantee a computer can encode a particular stream. Performance depends on the encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity. Its system requirements are not a promise of unattended reliability.

Connect OBS to YouTube Live

  1. Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room. Create or schedule a stream using the encoder workflow. Follow YouTube’s current encoder setup guide.
  2. Copy the ingest details into OBS. YouTube provides a server URL and stream key. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, choose the YouTube service and enter the required connection details. Treat the stream key like a password: do not show it on screen or share it.
  3. Start the encoder and inspect the preview. Start streaming in OBS, then wait for the preview in Live Control Room. Check the picture and audio before starting the public broadcast.
  4. Start the broadcast in Live Control Room. When the preview is ready and the settings are correct, start the live stream there. Keep the computer and network connection available, and monitor the stream while it runs.

YouTube recommends checking the preview and continuously monitoring audio and video quality; see its computer live-streaming tips. The documented OBS and YouTube workflows do not promise that a computer, connection, or broadcast will run unattended without interruption.

Plan for archives, interruptions, and monitoring

YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived in its encoder guidance. That is an operational rule, not a guarantee that every longer broadcast will be archived. Decide how you will handle a long-running devotional stream and check its status in YouTube Studio.

  • Playback stops or a file is missing: Check the VLC playlist entries and local file paths, then test the transition between files before restarting the broadcast.
  • YouTube does not receive the feed: Check that OBS is streaming, the server URL is correct, and the current stream key matches the one shown in Live Control Room.
  • The preview has no sound or video: Check the VLC source, scene visibility, audio meters, and playback in OBS before starting the public stream.
  • Encoding struggles or frames are missed: Reduce the workload by adjusting resolution, frame rate, encoder, or scene complexity; OBS notes that performance varies with these factors.
  • The stream is interrupted or restricted: Check Live Control Room for status messages and review YouTube’s restrictions guidance. Resolve rights or eligibility issues rather than repeatedly restarting the same content.
