To stream with Dockerized FFmpeg, create or select a YouTube live stream, copy its server URL and stream key from YouTube Studio, then configure FFmpeg inside your container to send the video to that endpoint. The key is a private publishing credential; the input file or device must also be reachable from inside the container. The example below shows the FFmpeg command pattern, but Docker launch syntax depends on the image and deployment you choose.
Before you start: enable YouTube Live
Check that live streaming is enabled for your channel before troubleshooting Docker or FFmpeg. YouTube says the channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. First-time enablement can take up to 24 hours, so activate it ahead of an event. Get the YouTube server URL and stream key
- In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live.
- Open the Stream tab and create a stream or choose a scheduled one. Reusing stream settings may also reuse a previous key.
- Copy the server URL and stream key shown in Live Control Room. The URL identifies YouTube’s ingestion endpoint; the key authenticates your encoder. YouTube describes stream keys as a password and address for the stream. Its guide is Manage live stream settings.
Some encoder interfaces take the URL and key as separate fields. FFmpeg commonly receives them combined as SERVER_URL/STREAM_KEY. Use the exact values YouTube displays; do not guess or alter the endpoint.
Treat the key like a password. Do not put a real key in public source code, screenshots, shared logs, or a public container configuration. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update the encoder; YouTube says only channel owners or managers can reset keys.

Make the video available inside the container
FFmpeg resolves input paths from its own runtime environment. A file on the host is not automatically visible inside a container: ensure the file is made available at the path you pass to -i. For a camera, capture device, or remote source, the container must have access to that input too. The exact mount, device-access, and secret-delivery settings depend on the Docker image and deployment; there is no universal Docker command that can safely be prescribed without those details.
Send a file to YouTube with FFmpeg
Set the URL and key as environment variables in your deployment, then adapt this illustrative command inside the container:

ffmpeg -re -i /media/input.mp4 -c:v libx264 -c:a aac -f flv "$YOUTUBE_INGEST_URL/$YOUTUBE_STREAM_KEY"-re reads a file at approximately its native rate rather than sending it as fast as possible. The example encodes video with H.264, audio with AAC, and uses the FLV output format used with RTMP publishing. It is a command pattern, not a tested recipe for every image or input: confirm that your FFmpeg build includes the required codecs and protocols, and adjust for your source and YouTube’s current encoder requirements. FFmpeg documents its command-line options and protocols.
For a live input rather than a file, replace the input portion with the input URL or device syntax appropriate to that source. Ensure the source is actually accessible from the container before starting the publishing command.

Choose RTMP or RTMPS
Use the endpoint YouTube provides for the stream. If Live Control Room gives you an ordinary RTMP URL, use it as shown. To use encrypted RTMPS, select the RTMPS endpoint explicitly; YouTube specifies TLS/SSL and port 443 for RTMPS, and the default displayed endpoint may still be RTMP. Do not simply change rtmp to rtmps in a URL. See Google’s RTMPS delivery guide and YouTube’s RTMPS encryption instructions.
Start the stream and verify the preview
- Start FFmpeg in the container and check its output for connection or encoding errors. Keep the key out of logs you share publicly.
- Wait for the incoming video to appear in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room preview. Confirm the correct picture and audio before making the event public or selecting Go Live for a scheduled event.
- Test in advance, check event access and monitor audio/video quality. YouTube recommends leaving 20% upload-bandwidth headroom beyond the stream bitrate; a simultaneous primary and backup feed needs additional capacity. See YouTube streaming tips and Troubleshoot your YouTube live stream.
If this is only a test and you do not intend a public event, set the event to private or unlisted as appropriate before streaming.

Stop the feed and handle archives
Stop FFmpeg when you want to end transmission, then follow the event’s controls in Live Control Room. YouTube’s encoder help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; do not assume the same archive behavior for longer streams.

- YouTube will not accept the stream: confirm Live is enabled for the channel, use the current server URL and key from the selected stream, and check that the event is the one open in Live Control Room.
- FFmpeg cannot open the input: verify the path from inside the container, not just on the host. For a live device or remote source, check that the container can access it.
- Connection fails with RTMPS: use YouTube’s RTMPS endpoint as supplied and ensure the connection uses its TLS endpoint on port 443; do not infer an endpoint by editing an RTMP URL.
- The preview is missing or has no sound: check FFmpeg’s input and output messages, confirm the intended video/audio streams are being encoded, and wait for the preview in Live Control Room before starting the event.
- Playback is unstable: check available upload capacity against the stream bitrate and retain YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom; account for the extra feed if sending a backup stream.
- The stream key may have leaked: reset it in Live Control Room and replace the value used by the container. A reset requires channel-owner or manager access.
Keep the video rights-safe and suitable for YouTube
Docker and FFmpeg do not grant rights to the video, music, or other material you send. Use content you own or are authorized to stream, and review YouTube’s policies and any applicable rights before broadcasting. Replaying a recording as a live stream does not by itself establish that you have permission to use its contents.
