Sign in to YouTube Studio, open your stream settings, then enter YouTube’s stream URL and stream key in your encoder. Do not enter your Google password or authenticator code in the encoder’s stream-key field.
How do I use my YouTube stream key with 2-step verification?
- Make sure the channel can stream. YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. Enable live streaming for the channel; first-time enablement may take up to 24 hours. See YouTube’s live-streaming setup instructions and channel verification and eligibility details.
- Sign in to the Google Account that manages the channel. Complete the password and second-step or passkey challenge if prompted. Keep a recovery method available. Google says not to share verification codes; its 2-Step Verification help describes account sign-in methods and recovery options.
- Open YouTube’s stream settings. In YouTube Studio, choose Create → Go live → Stream. Create a stream or select an existing one. Live Control Room displays the stream URL and key; previously used stream settings may load the previous key. Refer to Manage live stream settings.
- Enter the details in the encoder. If the encoder offers a YouTube destination, select it and follow its sign-in flow. Otherwise, copy YouTube’s stream URL into the encoder’s server or RTMP field, and copy the stream key into its separate Stream Key field.
- Preview and test. Check the preview in Live Control Room before going live. Confirm your outbound upload capacity can handle the stream bitrate with headroom; YouTube recommends leaving 20% room rather than using all available upload capacity. Monitor audio and video during the stream. See YouTube’s live encoder settings and bandwidth guidance.
- Keep the key private. Treat it like a password. If you think it has been exposed, reset it in Live Control Room’s Stream tab and replace the old value in the encoder.
Where do I enter my YouTube stream key?
Enter it in the encoder’s Stream Key field. The YouTube stream URL goes in a separate field usually labeled Server, RTMP URL, or similar. If you select YouTube as the encoder destination, the encoder may populate or manage these connection details through its own supported sign-in flow.
YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Keep the key private and do not paste it into chats, public posts, or a Google sign-in prompt. If it is exposed, use the Stream tab in Live Control Room to reset it, then update the encoder before attempting to reconnect.
Does my authenticator code go in OBS?
No. An authenticator code, passkey, backup code, or security-key challenge is for signing in to or re-authenticating your Google Account. OBS or another encoder sends the configured video feed using the stream URL and stream key; it does not need your Google password or 2-Step Verification code in the stream-key field.

If an app asks you to sign in to Google, prefer its Sign in with Google option when available. Google says app passwords are not recommended and are unnecessary in most cases; they are a fallback for apps that cannot use that sign-in method. Never treat an encoder’s stream-key field as a place to enter account credentials.
Why can’t I go live after verifying my YouTube account?
Account verification and live-stream access are related but separate checks. A channel must be verified, must not have a live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days, and must have live streaming enabled. If this is the channel’s first enablement, YouTube says activation may take up to 24 hours. Confirm you are signed in to the Google Account that manages the intended channel, then check eligibility and the Live Control Room again.

How do I reset a YouTube stream key?
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Create → Go live → Stream.
- In Live Control Room, open the Stream tab and reset the key using the available stream settings.
- Replace the old value in the encoder’s Stream Key field with the new key. Check that the stream URL remains in the server/RTMP field.
- Preview the stream and confirm the encoder connects before starting the event.
Resetting a key can disconnect an encoder still using the old value. Update every encoder configuration that needs to send to that stream.
Troubleshooting common stream-key problems
- You cannot get into Studio: finish the Google Account second step, or use a recovery method already configured on the account, such as a signed-in device, backup code, passkey, or added security key. Available prompts can vary by account.
- The channel is verified but streaming is unavailable: check that live streaming is enabled and that the channel has no applicable restriction. First-time enablement may take up to 24 hours.
- The encoder will not connect: check that the server/RTMP URL and stream key are in their respective fields, and that the encoder is using the intended stream. If the key may be compromised or outdated, reset it in Live Control Room and update the encoder.
- The stream is unstable or drops frames: check outbound bandwidth, leave capacity headroom, test before the event, preview in Live Control Room, and monitor audio and video while live.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep uploaded video playing as a 24/7 YouTube stream, StreamNeo runs the loop from the cloud: upload your video or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home. Every slot streams your upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, and the monthly option is $9.99 per month.
