How to Use Amazon CloudFront to Deliver Live Video Streams

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Amazon CloudFront delivers a live stream to viewers; it does not encode or package the video. First, an upstream service must create the stream’s media segments and playback manifest. A typical AWS workflow uses MediaLive to encode the incoming feed, MediaPackage to package it when the workflow needs additional formats or packaging features, and CloudFront to distribute the prepared output. If MediaLive already creates outputs in the formats viewers need, MediaStore can be an origin alternative.

Understand CloudFront’s role in a live-streaming workflow

A live delivery pipeline has three distinct jobs: receive and encode the source, package the resulting video for playback, and deliver it to viewers. CloudFront handles the last job. It sits between an origin and the player, serving prepared manifests and media segments through a CloudFront URL.

An encoder packages video into segments and creates manifests that describe those segments and their playback order. Common formats include MPEG DASH, Apple HLS, Microsoft Smooth Streaming, and CMAF. CloudFront cannot turn a camera feed or unprepared video into one of these streams by itself.

Typical AWS pipeline

  1. Ingest a live source feed.
  2. Use MediaLive to encode it in real time and produce the required outputs.
  3. Use MediaPackage to package those outputs when the workflow needs multiple delivery formats, device support, DRM, or other packaging features. If the MediaLive outputs already match the formats viewers need, MediaStore is a documented scalable-origin alternative.
  4. Configure a CloudFront distribution with the chosen origin and behaviors for the stream’s manifests and segments.
  5. Give the player the CloudFront stream URL.

Choose an origin and packaging workflow

Workflow choice Use it when Key consideration
MediaLive → MediaPackage → CloudFront You need MediaPackage to package outputs into delivery formats or need features such as DRM or manifest functions. The CloudFront distribution must point to the relevant MediaPackage endpoint, with behaviors and query-string handling suited to its output.
MediaLive → MediaStore → CloudFront MediaLive already produces the formats required by the viewers’ devices. MediaStore is an origin alternative; it does not remove the need to prepare compatible output upstream.

The MediaPackage setup assumes that its channel and endpoint already exist. Choose the packaging path based on actual player and feature requirements, rather than adding a packager by default.

Configure CloudFront for the stream

1. Create the upstream endpoint first

Set up the encoder and origin before creating the distribution. For the MediaPackage workflow, note the endpoint path and output format: CloudFront needs to fetch the manifest and segment objects from the right location. The exact endpoint paths and behavior patterns depend on the AWS service configuration and format, so use the current AWS instructions for the endpoint you created.

2. Set the distribution origin and path

In the CloudFront distribution, configure the origin to point to the MediaPackage endpoint or MediaStore container. Set the origin path to match the required endpoint path. Confirm that the origin can be reached using the authorization method configured for it; a distribution with incorrect paths or blocked origin access will not be able to serve the stream.

3. Add cache behaviors for manifests and segments

Route requests according to the output format. AWS’s MediaPackage guidance typically uses one behavior for manifests and another for segments. The relevant extensions differ:

HLS .m3u8 .ts
CMAF .m3u8 .mp4
DASH .mpd .mp4
Smooth Streaming Single manifest behavior Use the matching endpoint and behavior defined by the current AWS guide.

These extensions are a guide to the behavior split, not a substitute for checking the endpoint’s actual path patterns. Apply the correct origin and cache behavior to each request type; do not assume one generic behavior is right for every format.

4. Set cache TTL and forward only needed query strings

For live MediaPackage delivery, AWS documents a minimum TTL of five seconds or less to help avoid serving stale content. Its guidance also includes the MediaPackage m modification-time query string. Preserve the query strings needed by the enabled MediaPackage features, and avoid forwarding optional parameters that the workflow does not use.

  • For time-shifted viewing, include start and end.
  • For manifest filtering, include aws.manifestfilter.
  • For LL-HLS blocking playlist requests, include _HLS_msn and _HLS_part.

Query-string handling is functional, not cosmetic: dropping a parameter required by the selected feature can change what the origin returns, while indiscriminately forwarding optional parameters adds unnecessary variation to requests.

5. Protect the origin

AWS recommends header-based CDN authorization between MediaPackage endpoints and CloudFront. Its reference solution uses a custom HTTP header called the CDN Identifier and stores the identifier in Secrets Manager. Configure origin protection for the workflow you deploy, and confirm that CloudFront sends the expected header before relying on the distribution in production.

6. Give the player the CloudFront URL

Once the distribution is configured, direct the application or media player to request the stream through the standard CloudFront URL for the relevant manifest. Test playback through that URL—not only by checking that the origin endpoint is reachable—because the distribution’s routing, cache settings, query strings, and authorization all affect delivery.

Plan redundancy for the failure you need to withstand

Media quality-aware resiliency with MediaPackage v2

AWS’s media quality-aware resiliency (MQAR) feature can choose between MediaPackage v2 origins using a Media Quality Confidence Score generated by MediaLive. The documented behavior uses a primary GET request and a concurrent secondary HEAD request, tracks origin scores, and uses the higher-scoring origin for later requests. The feature currently supports MediaPackage v2 origins. A cross-Region deployment requires a secondary channel in another Region with matching settings and an origin group configured for media quality scoring.

This is an origin-selection design, not a substitute for building and checking the redundant channels and origin group it depends on.

Broader redundant reference architecture

AWS’s Live Streaming on AWS solution describes parallel MediaLive feeds, packaging to HLS, DASH, and CMAF through MediaPackage, and delivery through CloudFront using a CDN Identifier header. Consider this broader architecture when the design calls for redundant feeds and packaging, rather than assuming a single distribution alone makes the full production pipeline redundant.

Estimate the delivery cost against your own event

CloudFront can be a substantial part of live-event delivery cost. AWS’s examples below are estimates from its accessed guide, whose publication year is not stated. Both assume US East (N. Virginia) and highest-bitrate viewer consumption; AWS notes that QVBR and variable video complexity can lower the estimate, and that prices are subject to change. Treat the figures as examples with those assumptions, not as current quotes for another Region or audience.

AWS sample scenario MediaLive MediaPackage CloudFront Estimated total
One-hour event, 1,000 viewers $1.99/hour $0.51/hour $67.24/hour $69.74/hour
One-hour live event, approximately 10,000 viewers; 99% CDN-to-MediaPackage cache-hit ratio $3.75/hour $9.01/hour $1,492.56/hour $1,505.60/hour

For a real estimate, model the actual audience, bitrate consumed, cache behavior, Region, and service configuration, then check current AWS pricing for those inputs. Audience size alone does not determine delivery cost.

Troubleshoot common delivery failures

Symptom Likely area to check What to verify
Player cannot load the manifest Origin path, manifest behavior, or authorization Confirm the endpoint path matches the configured origin path, the manifest extension is routed by a matching behavior, and the origin accepts the request from CloudFront.
Manifest loads but video segments fail Segment behavior or path routing Check that the segment extension is routed to the correct origin and that the behavior covers the actual segment paths emitted by the endpoint.
Live content appears stale Cache TTL or query-string handling Review the live MediaPackage minimum TTL and ensure the m modification-time query string is included where required.
Time-shift, manifest filtering, or LL-HLS behavior is missing Feature-specific query strings Check that the relevant feature is enabled and its required query strings—start/end, aws.manifestfilter, or _HLS_msn/_HLS_part—are handled as intended.
Origin requests are denied CDN authorization Verify the header-based authorization configuration, including the CDN Identifier value and the CloudFront origin custom header.
Only one format or device type plays Packaging choice and endpoint output Confirm that the selected packager produces the formats and features required by the target players; CloudFront only delivers what the origin makes available.

Or let it run in the cloud

CloudFront is for delivering prepared streams to viewers. If your goal instead is to keep an uploaded-video YouTube channel live around the clock, StreamNeo is a separate cloud service for that use case—not a replacement for an encoder, packager, or CloudFront in a live production pipeline.

  1. Upload a recording or build a playlist.
  2. Add your YouTube stream key once.
  3. Go live; StreamNeo loops the uploaded video from the cloud.

Nothing has to stay on at home, and no computer, OBS, or home connection needs to remain on. Each slot streams what you uploaded, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo streams to YouTube and plays uploaded videos; it does not stream from a camera. Learn more at StreamNeo, or start the free day.
