Open Mario Kart 8 Deluxe’s amiibo feature and follow its on-screen prompt, then tap a compatible amiibo to the NFC reader on your controller. The game unlocks a themed racing suit for your Mii; the amiibo is optional and does not become a playable racer.
How to scan an amiibo on Nintendo Switch

Open Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and go to its amiibo feature. Follow the game’s on-screen instructions to start the scan. Menu wording may vary by software version, so use the prompt shown in your game.

Hold the amiibo over the NFC reader on your controller: the Right Stick on the right Joy-Con, or the NFC touchpoint on a Nintendo Switch Pro Controller.

Wait for the game to read the figure and unlock its themed Mii racing suit, if that amiibo is compatible. Select the suit for your Mii as you customize your racer.

What amiibo unlock in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe
Amiibo provide optional cosmetic content: a racing suit for a Mii, not a new playable character or a gameplay advantage. Compatibility depends on the amiibo’s character or series. Nintendo’s Mario Kart 8 Deluxe amiibo compatibility page lists suits themed after supported figures, including Animal Crossing and Splatoon examples.

Nintendo’s update notes list additional compatibility in version 4.0.0, released September 1, 2026: Metroid series amiibo can unlock the Varia Suit, Legend of Zelda series amiibo the Hylian Suit, Kirby series amiibo the Kirby Suit, and a Daisy amiibo the Daisy Suit. Will scanning erase or change amiibo data?
No game data needs to be written to the figure for this reward. Nintendo explains that an amiibo containing data from a read/write game can still be used in compatible read-only games for bonus content. For example, a Mario amiibo with Super Smash Bros. Ultimate data can still unlock the Mario suit in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. Nintendo also says a figure can be used with multiple copies of a game that does not save data to the amiibo. Which amiibo should you use?
Choose based on the suit you want, not racing performance. Before buying a figure, check Nintendo’s compatibility information for the character or series; the official update notes may also identify newer suit unlocks. Physical form, price, and availability vary, but do not change the in-game reward. Nintendo notes that “Each amiibo may work with different compatible games in distinct ways.”
