How to Use an OBS Browser Source as an Overlay on a Prerecorded YouTube Stream

Add a Browser Source above a Media Source in OBS to overlay a webpage or graphic on prerecorded footage, then preview the composed stream in YouTube Live Control Room.

To layer a web graphic over prerecorded footage on YouTube, add the video as an OBS Media Source and the graphic as a Browser Source in the same scene. Put the Browser Source above the video in the Sources list, size it for your stream canvas, check the full video-and-audio mix, then send OBS to YouTube Live using your stream URL and key. This creates a live encoder stream from OBS; it does not change a video that is already uploaded to YouTube.

What you need and which kind of overlay this covers

This workflow is for combining a local prerecorded video and a web-based graphic in OBS, then broadcasting that composed scene as a YouTube live stream. OBS’s Media Source plays the video file; its Browser Source renders a webpage or local file in the scene. A local overlay page or an existing overlay URL can be used; the cited OBS workflow does not require buying an overlay service. OBS’s Media Sources guide and Browser Source guide describe these source types.

If by “pre-recorded YouTube stream” you mean YouTube’s break slate during an otherwise live broadcast, that is a separate Live Control Room feature—not a persistent graphic composited over your program. The break-overlay option is covered below.

Build the prerecorded-video scene in OBS

  1. Create or select a scene. In OBS, choose the scene that will be sent to YouTube, or create one for this program.
  2. Add the footage. In the Sources panel, click + and add a Media Source. Select the local video file in its properties. Choose whether it should loop, restart when the source becomes active, or show nothing when playback ends; those controls are available in the Media Source properties. See the OBS Media Sources guide.
  3. Add the graphic. Click + in Sources and add a Browser Source. Enter the overlay webpage URL, or enable Local file and select a local overlay page. Set the source width and height to match the intended output canvas. OBS’s default custom CSS gives the browser page a transparent background, removes margins, and hides scrollbars; the page itself still needs to draw the graphic and leave the areas that should show the video transparent. See the OBS Browser Source guide.
  4. Layer it over the footage. Drag the Browser Source above the Media Source in the Sources list. OBS draws higher-listed sources above lower-listed ones, so a source above the video can cover it. Select the browser source and position, resize, or crop it in the preview as needed. See the OBS Sources Guide.
  5. Check the scene and its audio. Play enough of the video to confirm the graphic is visible in the right place and at the right time, the footage behaves as intended at the end, and the audio is present at a suitable level. The Browser Source may also have audio; check the complete OBS mix rather than assuming the video is the only sound source.

Connect OBS to YouTube Live

  1. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or select the live stream. YouTube’s encoder setup instructions explain how to obtain the stream URL and stream key.
  2. In OBS, open Settings and then Stream. Select YouTube if available, or configure the service and server using YouTube’s stream URL; enter or connect the stream key as requested. Treat the key like a password: anyone with access to it may be able to send a stream to your event.
  3. Start streaming from OBS, but do not assume the event is ready just because the encoder has started. Wait for the incoming preview in Live Control Room and check that both the video and overlay appear correctly.
  4. Use YouTube’s Live Control Room controls to start the event when the preview is right. Monitor stream health while it runs, and end the event there when finished. YouTube recommends testing representative audio and motion and reviewing the preview and stream health in its live streaming tips.

Resolution, bitrate, and keyframe choices depend on the output and current YouTube encoder recommendations; the overlay steps above do not establish a single setting that fits every stream. Consult YouTube’s current encoder guidance in Live Control Room when choosing those values.

For a YouTube break slate, use the separate break-overlay feature

If the goal is a graphic or video shown when switching away from a live program, YouTube’s Overlay for breaks is distinct from an always-visible OBS scene overlay. YouTube’s break-overlay instructions describe this flow:

  1. In Live Control Room, copy the break-overlay URL.
  2. Add that URL as a Browser Source in OBS and size it to match the stream. Enable Shutdown source when not visible, then test the break flow before relying on it.
  3. If you select a video slate using Choose from your video, enable Allow embedding for that video.
  4. Account for audio separately: the break overlay does not control OBS’s audio sources. Include slate audio in the encoder mix if you want viewers to hear it.

Troubleshooting the overlay and stream

  • The overlay is hidden by the video: Move the Browser Source above the Media Source in the Sources list. The upper source is rendered above the lower one.
  • The overlay is clipped, misaligned, or has scrollbars: Check the Browser Source width and height against the intended canvas, then adjust its position and size in the preview. Inspect the overlay page itself; the transparent default background does not create the graphic for you.
  • The graphic has an opaque background: Confirm the overlay page leaves unused areas transparent. OBS’s default Browser Source CSS supplies a transparent page background, but page content can still paint an opaque rectangle.
  • The video stops when you expected it to repeat: Check the Media Source’s loop setting. If it should begin again after being hidden and shown, also review restart-on-activation behavior.
  • The YouTube preview does not appear or looks wrong: Confirm OBS is sending to the intended event with the correct stream URL and key, then wait for the preview and inspect stream health in Live Control Room. Recheck the OBS scene before starting the event.
  • The break slate appears but has no sound: Add the needed slate audio to the encoder mix; the YouTube break overlay does not manage OBS audio sources.
