Yes—an old laptop may be able to keep a YouTube cartoon stream running, but only if it can encode the video reliably and your internet connection and power remain stable. YouTube supports streaming through a computer encoder, but it does not publish a universal minimum specification for old laptops or guarantee uninterrupted 24/7 operation. Test your actual laptop and setup before relying on it. You also need the rights to broadcast every cartoon and audio track; finding a cartoon online does not make it free to rebroadcast.
What you need before you start
- A YouTube channel that is verified and currently eligible to go live. YouTube says a channel must have no live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days.
- A computer encoder that can play and encode your chosen video on the laptop. YouTube supports encoder-based live streaming, but does not specify a minimum laptop model or hardware configuration.
- A stable internet connection and power supply for the full time you intend to stream. There is no universal upload-speed, electricity-cost, or continuous-operation figure established for an individual Indian household.
- Permission to use the cartoon footage, music, and any other material in the stream, including the relevant rights for the intended territory and use.
YouTube’s guidance says, “You do not need expensive equipment, what you have at hand will do.” That is encouragement to start with available equipment, not a guarantee that a particular old laptop can encode continuously.
Set up the laptop and YouTube stream
- Check live-stream access. Sign in to the channel you plan to use and confirm in YouTube Studio that live streaming is available. Resolve any eligibility or restriction notice before configuring the laptop.
- Choose the cartoon video or playlist. Use only footage and audio you are entitled to broadcast. Check the rights for each item rather than assuming that an online upload is reusable.
- Prepare the laptop. Connect it to the power source you intend to use and the network you will rely on. Close unnecessary applications, then open the encoder and load the video or playlist. There is no sourced universal setting for resolution, bitrate, frame rate, keyframe interval, or laptop temperature that ensures a successful 24/7 stream.
- Create or configure the live broadcast in YouTube Studio. Select the computer-encoder workflow, then copy the stream key or connect the encoder as instructed by the interface. Treat a stream key like a password: do not publish it or include it in a screenshot or stream overlay. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update the encoder.
- Match the encoder to what the laptop can sustain. Use the encoder settings YouTube Studio recommends for the intended stream, where shown, and begin with a configuration the laptop can handle. Do not infer capacity from a brief playback: encoding a live stream continuously is a different test from watching a file.
- Check the preview before going public. Confirm the picture is moving, audio is audible and correctly routed, the intended broadcast is selected, and YouTube is receiving the encoder feed. Monitor both the encoder and YouTube’s stream-health feedback.
- Run a monitored test using the complete setup. Keep the laptop, encoder, network and power arrangement as they will be during the planned stream. Watch for encoding overload, dropped connection, overheating symptoms or system instability; note when each occurs. A short test can reveal problems, but it cannot establish that a machine will remain stable indefinitely.
- Start the broadcast and keep a way to check it. Verify that YouTube shows the stream as live and periodically check the laptop, encoder and stream health. If the connection or encoder stops, investigate the cause and restart or reconnect using the encoder and YouTube Studio controls.
Choose stream length and archive strategy
YouTube says it can automatically archive live streams shorter than 12 hours. If a stream exceeds 12 hours, it may not be captured at all. If keeping an archive matters, plan shorter sessions rather than assuming one continuous stream will produce a replay. YouTube recommends keeping a local recording as a backup; that recording also needs enough available storage and may add work for a laptop already encoding.
For archive-dependent broadcasts, decide in advance whether you would rather run shorter sessions or keep a local recording. Neither choice guarantees a successful archive; check that the recording or replay exists after the test session.

Broadcast rights are separate from monetization
YouTube’s livestream terms require the content provider to have the necessary rights to exploit live content on Google services, including applicable music licensing rights. Whether a specific cartoon is cleared depends on the work, territory, licence and intended use; do not assume permission from the fact that it is available online.
YouTube’s monetization policies apply to live streams. Its policy, updated July 15, 2025, says repetitive or mass-produced material may be ineligible as “inauthentic” content. Reused material needs significant original commentary, substantive modification, or added educational or entertainment value. Permission to broadcast is not, by itself, a guarantee that a stream meets monetization rules.

Set the audience designation accurately
Choose the audience setting that accurately describes the content. If the stream is made for kids, YouTube disables features including live chat and personalized ads; contextual ads may still be shown.
