You can use an Xbox One wireless controller on a Windows 10 PC with a USB data cable, Bluetooth on compatible controller revisions, or Microsoft’s Xbox Wireless Adapter for Windows. The original Xbox One controller does not have Bluetooth, so check your model before trying to pair it wirelessly. For the quickest first test, connect it by USB.
Before you connect
Choose the connection method that fits your controller and PC:
- USB cable: The simplest way to test a controller, update its firmware, or use a model without Bluetooth. The cable must carry data, not just power. Many Xbox One controllers use micro-USB; newer Xbox Wireless Controllers use USB-C.
- Bluetooth: Works with Bluetooth-capable Xbox One controller revisions and a PC with Bluetooth. The original Xbox One controller cannot use this method.
- Xbox Wireless Adapter for Windows: A separate adapter for Xbox Wireless connections. Consider it for a non-Bluetooth controller, multiple controllers, or headset and accessory needs that Bluetooth may not support.
On Bluetooth-capable revisions, the plastic around the Xbox button is part of the controller’s front face. Earlier models have a separate upper shell section around the button. This visual clue is not definitive for every special edition, so check the model label or Microsoft’s controller compatibility information if you are unsure. A generic Bluetooth USB dongle cannot add Bluetooth capability to a controller that lacks it.

Connect the controller by USB
- Press the controller’s Xbox button to turn it on.
- Connect it to the PC with a compatible USB data cable.
- Wait for Windows to install or activate the controller driver, then press a button or move a stick.
- Open a controller-enabled game and test it.
If Windows does not detect the controller, try a different data cable and connect directly to another USB port on the PC instead of through a hub. A charge-only cable may power the controller but cannot carry the data needed for a usable connection. If possible, test another known-good USB port and restart the PC.
Check whether Windows recognizes it
- Press Windows key + R.
- Enter
joy.cpland press Enter. - Select the Xbox controller and choose Properties.
- Press buttons, move the sticks, and test the triggers and directional pad.
This opens Windows’ Game Controllers panel. It is a diagnostic check, not something you need to run every time you play. If the controller is absent or its inputs do not register here, focus on the cable, USB port, controller, or driver before changing game settings.
Pair a Bluetooth-capable controller
Make sure the PC has Bluetooth hardware and the controller is a Bluetooth-capable revision. Charge or replace the batteries, and disconnect the controller from a console, phone, or other device that may be trying to reconnect to it.

The flashing Xbox button indicates pairing mode; a steady light generally indicates a connection. If the controller pairs but audio, an accessory, or a game feature does not work, that does not necessarily mean the controller input connection has failed. Bluetooth may provide less headset, accessory, or configuration support than USB or Xbox Wireless, depending on the controller, driver, and game.
Connect with the Xbox Wireless Adapter
The Xbox Wireless Adapter for Windows is not an ordinary Bluetooth dongle. It connects through Microsoft’s Xbox Wireless protocol and can be useful for an original non-Bluetooth controller, multiple controllers, or certain headset and accessory setups. Microsoft’s adapter documentation describes support for up to eight controllers per adapter and highlights chat and stereo-audio use; the exact experience still depends on the controller and connected accessories. The adapter is an older product, so availability may vary.
- Plug the Xbox Wireless Adapter into a USB port and allow Windows to install its driver.
- Press the adapter’s pairing button.
- Press and hold the controller’s Pair button until its Xbox button flashes.
- Wait for pairing to finish and the connection to remain steady.
- Test the controller in
joy.cplor a game.
If the adapter is not recognized, unplug it and try another USB port, preferably without an unpowered hub. Run Windows Update where available and check Device Manager for an unrecognized device. If you use the adapter, pair the controller with it rather than selecting it from Windows’ generic Bluetooth menu. Microsoft’s adapter announcement and technical document describe its connection and capabilities.

Update controller firmware
An update may help if the controller disconnects, inputs behave incorrectly, or the Xbox Accessories app reports new firmware. The app also supports controller configuration and button mapping for compatible controllers. For updates and configuration, use a USB connection or Xbox Wireless Adapter rather than assuming ordinary Bluetooth will provide every function.

- Check the game’s controller or input settings and enable controller support if needed.
- Connect the controller before launching the game, then restart the game.
- For a Steam game, inspect that game’s controller settings and Steam Input configuration.
- Close extra remapping tools. Running more than one can create duplicate virtual controllers or conflicting inputs.
- Test another controller-supported game to narrow down whether the problem is game-specific.
Xbox controllers generally use XInput, which is widely supported, but not every PC game accepts a controller. Some older games may need configuration or compatibility work. PlayStation button prompts are usually a game’s display choice, not proof that the Xbox controller failed to connect. Also distinguish basic input from full feature support: rumble, headset audio, trigger effects, and accessories may behave differently across games and connection methods.

The controller does not appear in Bluetooth settings
- Confirm the controller revision supports Bluetooth; the original Xbox One controller does not.
- Check that Bluetooth is on and that the controller’s Xbox button is flashing in pairing mode.
- Turn off Bluetooth on a nearby phone or other device temporarily, in case the controller is reconnecting there.
- Remove an old Xbox controller entry in Windows, restart the controller, and pair it again.
- Update the PC’s Bluetooth driver, preferably from the PC or motherboard manufacturer if Windows cannot find a suitable one.
- If pairing still fails, test over USB or use the Xbox Wireless Adapter.
Microsoft identifies outdated or incompatible drivers, range, power, and nearby USB 3.0 interference as possible Bluetooth problems. Its troubleshooting steps include removing and re-adding a device.

The controller connects, then disconnects
Recharge or replace batteries, move closer to the PC, and remove or re-pair the controller in Windows. Update controller firmware over USB or the Xbox Wireless Adapter, and update the PC’s Bluetooth and chipset drivers. If a USB Bluetooth adapter is near a USB 3.0 device or port, move it farther away; Microsoft notes that some USB 3.0 devices can interfere with Bluetooth.

It works over USB but not wirelessly
That narrows the issue to wireless compatibility, pairing, batteries, drivers, firmware, or interference. Confirm Bluetooth support before troubleshooting Bluetooth, or pair through the Xbox Wireless Adapter if that is the connection you intend to use. Keep USB available while updating firmware and diagnosing the wireless setup.
Windows sees it, but a game does not
Check inputs in joy.cpl, enable controller support in the game or launcher, and relaunch the game after connecting. Disable conflicting remapping software and test another supported game. If only one older title fails, it may have different input requirements.
The headset jack or an accessory does not work
The controller can deliver game input while its 3.5 mm headset jack, chat audio, or accessory does not work over Bluetooth. Try USB or Xbox Wireless Adapter connectivity if those features matter, but check the controller, headset, Windows driver, and game as well; support varies by combination.
Buttons, sticks, or triggers behave incorrectly
Test each input in joy.cpl. If it is wrong there too, try another USB data cable or connection method, then check for controller firmware in Xbox Accessories. If the fault follows the controller to another PC or Xbox, it may be a controller hardware problem rather than a Windows setting.
Which connection method should you use?
| Need | Best starting choice | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Quickest test or troubleshooting | USB data cable | Wired; connector must match the controller |
| Original Xbox One controller | USB or Xbox Wireless Adapter | It generally has no Bluetooth |
| One controller on a Bluetooth-equipped laptop | Bluetooth | May offer less audio and accessory support |
| Desktop without Bluetooth | USB or Xbox Wireless Adapter | A generic Bluetooth dongle works only with a Bluetooth-capable controller |
| Multiple controllers or Xbox Wireless features | Xbox Wireless Adapter | Requires a separate adapter, whose availability varies |
| Firmware update or configuration | USB or Xbox Wireless Adapter | Requires a working data connection |
A practical fallback order is: test by USB, update firmware if needed, connect wirelessly by Bluetooth or Xbox Wireless, verify input in joy.cpl, then check the game and its settings. If the controller works over USB but its port, battery compartment, or sticks are damaged—or it lacks the wireless feature you need—consider a compatible replacement. Otherwise, there is no need to buy a new controller just to try it on a PC.
