You can run a YouTube encoder as a Docker Compose service on an OVHcloud VPS, but Compose only keeps the container process managed on one server; it does not guarantee an uninterrupted broadcast. The exact image, encoder command and media input depend on your chosen implementation. This guide shows how to configure the deployment safely, size the stream around measured network capacity, and monitor whether YouTube is actually receiving it.
What this setup does—and what it does not
Docker Compose describes and operates services on a single server. Docker notes that running an application on one server is the easiest deployment model, but a production setup still needs deliberate configuration and operations choices (Docker Compose production guidance; Compose application model).
In this workflow, an encoder runs in a container on an OVHcloud virtual private server and sends its feed to YouTube Live. The stream source might be a file, playlist or another input supported by the encoder you choose; neither a particular source nor a specific encoder image is established here. A process restart policy can recover from some container exits, but not from a VPS failure, network outage, invalid stream key, channel restriction or exhausted server resources.
OVHcloud describes a VPS as a virtual machine with root access and provides guidance for getting started (OVHcloud VPS guide). That alone does not identify a plan suitable for your workload. A relay or passthrough stream and a software-transcoded stream can have very different CPU needs.

Prepare the channel, VPS and encoder
Enable YouTube Live and obtain stream credentials
-
Enable live streaming for your YouTube channel in advance. YouTube says first-time activation can take up to 24 hours.
-
In YouTube Studio, create or select the live stream and obtain its ingest server URL and stream key.
-
Configure the chosen encoder to use the URL and key. YouTube’s encoder instructions say to enter the YouTube Live server URL and stream key into the encoder (YouTube: Create a live stream with an encoder).
Treat the stream key like a password. Do not commit it to a public repository or expose it in a public Compose file. Compose supports modeling secrets as files mounted into services, but you must choose and verify a secret-handling method appropriate to your deployment (Compose application model).

Install the runtime and identify the workload
Choose a supported operating system for the VPS, then follow current Docker Engine and Compose plugin installation instructions for that operating system. Before selecting server resources, establish whether the encoder will simply relay an already encoded feed or transcode it, and identify the intended codec, resolution and frame rate. No exact OVHcloud plan or resource size can be recommended without those details and current plan specifications.
Build a Compose deployment around your encoder
There is no single safe, copy-paste Compose file for this topic: the image, command, media source, environment variables and secret interface vary by encoder. Start with a base compose.yaml that describes the service according to the selected image’s documentation. Add a production override when you need different production settings. Docker’s production guidance discusses restart policies, port bindings, environment differences and log aggregation (Use Compose in production).
Set an intentional restart policy
Choose a restart policy based on how you want unexpected exits and intentional stops handled. For example, a policy that restarts after an unexpected exit can help recover from a crashed encoder. Verify the selected policy’s behavior for your Compose and Docker versions before relying on it. A restart policy is process recovery—not high availability—and it cannot repair causes outside the container.
Limit exposure and persist only necessary data
Bind host ports only when the service actually needs inbound connections, and expose only the ports required for that design. Use persistent volumes for data that must survive container replacement, such as a media library stored on the VPS; do not persist transient files without a reason. If the media is sourced elsewhere, account for that dependency and its availability separately.

Handle dependencies and readiness correctly
If the encoder depends on another service, do not assume Compose will wait until that dependency is ready: by default, it waits only for the dependency container to be running. Where readiness matters, define a healthcheck that tests a real readiness signal supported by the chosen image, then use a service_healthy dependency condition (Compose startup order). An unrelated example healthcheck can report a false sense of readiness.
Choose stream quality and bandwidth from capacity
Set resolution, frame rate and bitrate to match the content and the sustained upload capacity available to the VPS. YouTube recommends 20% extra upload-bandwidth headroom and advises testing and monitoring the stream (YouTube streaming tips). This is a recommendation, not a benchmark or a guarantee that a particular VPS connection will sustain a stream.
For a single outgoing feed, allow at least the selected streaming bitrate plus the recommended headroom in sustained upload capacity. If primary and backup feeds are both transmitting, account for both streams’ traffic. A server’s advertised network capability does not by itself establish the sustained capacity available to your encoder, so test the actual deployment.
Use YouTube’s current encoder settings guidance to match codec, bitrate mode and keyframe interval to the encoder you selected; prefer RTMPS when supported for encrypted ingest. Exact settings should be taken from YouTube’s current guidance and matched to the codec and configuration in use, not copied from a different encoder setup (YouTube encoder settings).

Start, inspect and update the service
Bring up the Compose project
-
From the directory containing your Compose configuration, run
docker compose up -dto start the services in the background. -
Run
docker compose psto inspect service state anddocker compose logsto inspect encoder output. A container marked running is not proof that it is sending a valid feed. -
Open YouTube Live Control Room and check the incoming preview and stream health. Also confirm viewer-facing playback. YouTube recommends checking stream health and testing before relying on the broadcast (YouTube streaming tips).
Deploy changes deliberately
When you change the image, command or configuration, review the change and rebuild or recreate the affected service as needed. Docker’s production guide covers rebuilding and recreating services for updates (Use Compose in production). After deployment, check both container output and YouTube’s receiving status; a successful container start alone does not validate the end-to-end stream.

Monitor the full path, not just the container
For a 24/7 target, monitor the Compose service, encoder output, YouTube Live Control Room stream health and the viewer-facing playback. A restart policy helps only with certain process failures. It cannot fix inadequate CPU for transcoding, exhausted disk space, upstream network failure, VPS maintenance, a bad key or a channel-level restriction. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring rather than assuming that a configured encoder will remain healthy indefinitely (YouTube streaming tips).
Understand the 24-hour archive limitation
YouTube’s encoder guide says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived (YouTube encoder guide). That stated limit does not establish that a continuous 24-hour broadcast will be saved as one complete replay. If you need an archive, plan for that limitation and verify YouTube’s current behavior and your stream’s archive status rather than assuming the whole day will be available as a single video.
Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely area to check | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Container exits repeatedly | Encoder command, image configuration or unavailable input | Inspect docker compose logs, confirm the command and media source match the selected image, and verify that required files or dependencies are available. |
| Container is running but YouTube shows no incoming stream | Ingest URL, stream key or encoder connection | Check encoder logs and confirm the correct YouTube URL and key are configured securely. Verify the channel is enabled for live streaming and inspect Live Control Room. |
| Stream health degrades or playback stutters | Insufficient sustained upload capacity or overloaded encoder | Compare the outgoing bitrate with measured VPS upload capacity, preserve YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom, and inspect CPU load if transcoding. |
| Service does not recover after a fault | Restart policy or failure outside the container | Check Compose service state and logs. A restart policy only handles eligible process exits; investigate VPS, network, key, channel and resource conditions separately. |
| Dependent service starts too late | Container-running state mistaken for readiness | Add a meaningful healthcheck and use a service_healthy dependency condition if the selected services support it. |
| Expected 24-hour replay is missing or incomplete | YouTube’s stated automatic archive limit | Check the current archive status and platform behavior; the encoder guide’s automatic-archive statement applies to streams under 12 hours, not a guarantee for one 24-hour replay. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a continuously looping prerecorded video on YouTube rather than managing a VPS and encoder, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded videos; it does not stream a live camera feed. Your computer can be off, it supports any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and it can automatically recover if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. Start at StreamNeo’s free trial registration.
