Use FFmpeg’s concat demuxer to play compatible music files in sequence, then configure FFmpeg separately to repeat the sequence and send a live-encoded signal to YouTube. The concat list does not convert mismatched files, configure YouTube ingest, or give you permission to broadcast the music. Check rights before you go live.
What an FFmpeg concat file does—and what it does not do
A concat file is a text list that FFmpeg’s concat demuxer reads as one virtual input. It sequences the listed files and adjusts timestamps so each follows the previous one. It is not a media converter or a live-stream encoder.
FFmpeg’s concat demuxer documentation says, “All files must have the same streams (same codecs, same time base, etc.).” In practice, matching file extensions or names do not prove that files are compatible. Stream layout, codecs, and time bases matter; unequal stream lengths and inaccurate duration metadata can also cause gaps or transition artifacts.
Choose the right concat method

Do not confuse the concat demuxer with FFmpeg’s concat protocol: the protocol is a separate, file-level concatenation method that applies to certain containers, not a general substitute for the demuxer.

Prepare and inspect your music files
- Inspect every input. Check each file’s streams, codecs, time bases, and audio/video layout with your media inspection workflow. Do not assume two files are compatible just because both are MP4s or both are audio files.
- Make the inputs consistent if needed. If the streams differ, create compatible versions before using the demuxer, or use the concat filter when re-encoding is part of the workflow.
- Check durations and transitions. Stream-length differences can introduce gaps. If a file’s stored duration is wrong, the concat demuxer’s
durationdirective can override it; use that only when you know the correct duration. - Confirm rights before preparing a public broadcast. A technically valid playlist is not necessarily cleared for livestream use. See the rights section below.
Write the concat playlist
Save a plain-text file such as playlist.ffconcat with entries like these:

file 'track-03.mp4'For automatic format recognition, ffconcat version 1.0 must be the exact first line: no leading whitespace and no byte-order mark. FFmpeg documents the script as extended-ASCII. Quote or escape paths containing spaces or special characters. Relative paths are convenient when the playlist and tracks are together, but they still need to resolve from FFmpeg’s working context. Path escaping can vary with the operating system and shell, so verify paths in your own environment rather than assuming one form works everywhere.

Repeat the playlist and send a live signal
Playlist order and indefinite repetition are separate jobs: the concat demuxer orders the files; FFmpeg’s loop option and realtime pacing determine how the input is repeated and delivered for a live workflow. Output encoding is another separate concern. There is no single command that is reliable for every audio-only or audio-plus-video playlist, FFmpeg build, and input format, so test with your actual files and version before scheduling a long broadcast.
Use FFmpeg’s concat demuxer input for the playlist, choose an input-looping and realtime-pacing approach appropriate to your workflow, then configure an output that YouTube accepts. Use your own current YouTube ingestion address and stream name/key in the output destination; never copy a key from an example or share yours. Codec copy is appropriate only when the input streams are already suitable for the chosen output container and YouTube ingest. If they are not, encode compatible output streams.

Set YouTube encoder parameters
- Transport: YouTube supports RTMP and RTMPS; it recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport.
- Video codec: YouTube’s current live guidance lists H.264, H.265, and AV1. Select settings for the codec, resolution, and frame rate you actually use.
- Video rate control and keyframes: YouTube recommends CBR and a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds. Set bitrate from YouTube’s current table for your chosen resolution, frame rate, and codec, and leave upload headroom.
- Audio: YouTube lists AAC and MP3. Its recommended configuration is 128 kbps, 44.1 kHz, stereo.
These are platform recommendations, not a guarantee of quality or uninterrupted delivery. Check YouTube’s current encoder settings before configuring a stream because requirements can change.
Create the YouTube event and preflight the stream
- Create or select a live event in YouTube’s live interface, then retrieve that event’s current ingestion address and stream name/key. YouTube’s API exposes ingestion details as well as stream status and health.
- Use your own endpoint and key in the FFmpeg output configuration. Confirm that the destination matches the selected event and that the key is current.
- Start a test transmission with audio and visual motion similar to the planned broadcast. Keep YouTube Live Control Room open and check that incoming data appears and stream health is reported as healthy.
- Read health messages before going public. If YouTube does not receive data or reports a problem, resolve it and repeat the test rather than assuming a running FFmpeg process means the platform is receiving a usable stream.
Clear music rights before broadcasting
You must have the necessary rights for the content you livestream, including applicable music licensing rights. YouTube scans livestreams for third-party content; a match can lead to interruption or termination. Buying a track, crediting its creator, calling it “royalty-free,” or having permission for ordinary uploads does not automatically establish permission for a continuous livestream.

If you licensed third-party music, the rights holder may need to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist. Confirm the license covers livestreaming and arrange any required allowlisting before going live. If a stream is interrupted despite an apparent license, check YouTube’s copyright notice and ask the rights holder whether the channel is allowlisted.
