To stream 4K at 60 fps to YouTube Live with FFmpeg, set the encoder to 3840×2160, 60 fps, constant bitrate, and a two-second keyframe interval. YouTube’s current live-ingest guidance recommends 50 Mbps for H.264 or 35 Mbps for H.265/HEVC and AV1. For one H.264 stream, YouTube’s suggested 20% upload headroom works out to about 62.5 Mbps of stable outbound capacity. These are YouTube live-streaming settings, not upload-video recommendations; an Indian location does not change the published targets. YouTube encoder settings · YouTube streaming tips.
Choose a codec and plan the upload bandwidth
YouTube publishes different live-ingest bitrates by codec for 2160p60. The minimum is not the recommended target; use the recommended figure if your connection can sustain it with headroom.
| Codec | YouTube minimum for 2160p60 | YouTube recommended for 2160p60 | Practical consideration |
|---|---|---|---|
| H.264 | 14 Mbps | 50 Mbps | Used in the example command below; requires more upload capacity at the recommended rate. |
| H.265 (HEVC) | 10 Mbps | 35 Mbps | Lower recommended bitrate, but confirm your FFmpeg build and workflow support the encoder. |
| AV1 | 10 Mbps | 35 Mbps | Same published bitrate figures as H.265; confirm encoder and workflow support. |
These are YouTube’s published live-ingest figures. Do not substitute the separate bitrate recommendations for uploading a finished video. YouTube encoder guidance · YouTube upload encoding settings.
Allow for real network conditions in India
YouTube recommends 20% more upload bandwidth than the stream bitrate. For H.264 at 50 Mbps, that means planning for approximately 62.5 Mbps of stable outbound upload for a single stream, before other household or venue traffic. A second stream adds its bitrate to the total. A broadband plan’s advertised speed or a download test does not establish that your location can sustain this upload.

Test repeatedly from the actual streaming location, at the time you expect to go live, and run a complete FFmpeg-to-YouTube test. YouTube notes that shared networks can constrain available capacity and that an interruption can break a stream. Its guidance does not establish an India-only bitrate, rank Indian ISPs, or identify one ISP or regional endpoint as suitable for every streamer. YouTube streaming tips.
Use settings YouTube accepts
- Protocol: RTMP or RTMPS. Prefer RTMPS when your FFmpeg build and workflow support the secure transport.
- Frame rate: up to 60 fps; set 60 for this target.
- Rate control: constant bitrate (CBR).
- Keyframes: every 2 seconds is recommended; 4 seconds is the maximum in YouTube’s guidance.
- SDR color: Rec. 709, 8-bit. This article’s sample command targets SDR, not HDR.
- Latency: 4K streams cannot use YouTube’s low-latency option; use normal latency.
YouTube lists H.264, H.265, and AV1 as supported codecs. Its HDR guidance recommends H.265 for HDR; changing to HDR requires an appropriate source, encoder, and color configuration rather than simply copying the SDR command below. YouTube encoder guidance.

Prepare YouTube Live and FFmpeg
- Create or select the live event: Open YouTube Live Control Room and configure the stream. In the stream settings, copy the stream URL and stream key for your encoder. Exact screen labels can vary as YouTube updates its interface; consult YouTube’s live stream settings help.
- Protect the key: Treat the stream key like a password. Do not publish it, include it in screenshots, or leave it in logs or shared shell history. Replace the placeholder in the command locally, not in an article, chat, or public script.
- Check your FFmpeg build: Confirm it includes the encoder you intend to use (the example requires
libx264) and the protocol support needed for your YouTube endpoint. Encoder availability depends on how FFmpeg was built. - Check the source: The command below accepts a video file. For camera, capture-card, or screen input, replace the file input with the operating-system- and device-specific FFmpeg input options; there is no single input syntax that applies to every device.
Example: stream a file as SDR H.264 4K60
This is a configuration template for a file input sent to a YouTube RTMP-compatible endpoint. It was assembled to match YouTube’s published target settings but is not certified for every FFmpeg build or tested on every system. Replace the file path and endpoint/key placeholders. If available and supported in your workflow, use YouTube’s RTMPS URL instead of the RTMP example.
ffmpeg -re -i "input.mp4"
-map 0:v:0 -map 0:a?
-vf "scale=3840:2160,fps=60,format=yuv420p"
-c:v libx264 -preset veryfast
-b:v 50M -minrate 50M -maxrate 50M -bufsize 100M
-r 60 -g 120 -keyint_min 120
-pix_fmt yuv420p -color_primaries bt709 -color_trc bt709 -colorspace bt709
-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
-f flv "rtmp://YOUR_YOUTUBE_INGEST/YOUR_STREAM_KEY"
What the important options do
-rereads the file at its native rate to approximate live pacing. It is for simulating live input from a file; do not add it automatically to a live camera or capture input.-vf "scale=3840:2160,fps=60,format=yuv420p"scales the video to 2160p, sets the output rate to 60 fps, and requests a broadly compatible pixel format. Scaling a lower-resolution source does not create genuine 4K detail; a source already at 3840×2160 avoids that upscale.-b:v,-minrate, and-maxrateset a 50 Mbps target and bounds;-bufsize 100Mconfigures the rate-control buffer. Verify how your installed FFmpeg/libx264 version handles these options.-g 120and-keyint_min 120request a 120-frame GOP, equivalent to two seconds at 60 fps. If the output frame rate changes, recalculate the frame count for the two-second interval.- The color options and
yuv420ptarget SDR Rec. 709. The audio options encode AAC at 128 kbps and 44.1 kHz;-map 0:a?makes the audio mapping optional if the file has no audio stream. -f flvselects the output container used for RTMP. For other supported codecs or protocols, do not assume this entire command transfers unchanged.
For H.265 or AV1, choose an encoder available in your build and use YouTube’s 35 Mbps recommended 2160p60 bitrate for that codec. Encoder throughput depends on the source, selected encoder, FFmpeg build, and hardware. YouTube’s bitrate table does not specify a CPU or GPU minimum that guarantees real-time 4K60 encoding. For FFmpeg option behavior and command structure, see the FFmpeg manual and FFmpeg full documentation.

Test before going live and monitor the event
- Measure outbound capacity: Run repeated upload tests from the streaming location. Check that the stable upload capacity has room for the stream, YouTube’s 20% headroom, other network traffic, and any backup stream.
- Run a representative pre-stream test: Use the intended source and audio, including scenes with substantial motion. A static test image may not expose the same encoding or network problems as gameplay or fast-moving footage.
- Confirm YouTube’s detected format: Check that Live Control Room detects the expected 2160p60 format and inspect its stream-health messages.
- Watch both ends during the stream: Monitor FFmpeg’s output and YouTube stream health. Keep a lower-resolution or lower-bitrate fallback ready if the uplink cannot sustain the target.
YouTube specifically recommends testing with similar audio and video movement, focusing on outbound upload capacity, and monitoring stream health. Encoder guidance · Streaming tips.
Troubleshoot common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or change |
|---|---|---|
FFmpeg reports that libx264 is unavailable |
The installed build does not include that encoder. | Use a build that includes libx264, or choose an encoder actually available in your build and adjust the command for it. |
| Connection fails or YouTube does not receive a signal | Incorrect endpoint/key, unsupported transport, or a network path problem. | Recheck the stream URL and key in YouTube Live Control Room, keep the key private, and confirm protocol support in FFmpeg. Test the complete path before the event. |
| Dropped frames, buffering, or poor stream health | Upload capacity is unstable or consumed by other traffic; the encoder may also be unable to keep pace. | Compare actual outbound capacity against the stream plus 20% headroom and other traffic. Reduce resolution, frame rate, or bitrate if needed, then test again. Check FFmpeg output as well as YouTube’s health status. |
| YouTube detects the wrong resolution or frame rate | Input limits, filter configuration, or encoding may prevent the intended output. | Check that the source and output filters produce 3840×2160 at 60 fps. Remember that scaling can enlarge an image but cannot restore detail absent from the source. |
| Video is rejected or color looks wrong | Unsupported encoder settings, pixel format, or color configuration. | For the SDR template, verify the selected encoder, 8-bit Rec. 709 intent, and pixel format against your build and YouTube’s current settings guidance. |
| Stream stops after a temporary connection failure | The connection interruption ended the RTMP session. | Restore the network path and restart or reconnect the encoder as needed. FFmpeg’s FIFO muxer documentation describes an optional RTMP recovery pattern, but it requires adaptation and testing and does not guarantee survival through outages. |
Copyright and YouTube live-stream rules
Before streaming a game, gameplay soundtrack, music, or other recorded material, make sure you have the rights or permission needed for live use. A video file being available on your computer does not establish permission to broadcast it. YouTube’s copyright checks and channel policies can affect whether a stream can remain available; review the rules that apply to your content and account in YouTube Help before scheduling a long event. Avoid assuming that crediting an owner or labeling content as a stream makes it authorized.

For channels built around repeated or prerecorded streams, consider whether the content is original, meaningfully edited, and compliant with YouTube’s channel monetization policies. Copyright permission and monetization eligibility are separate questions: permission to use material does not by itself guarantee monetization. Check YouTube’s current live streaming requirements and applicable copyright and monetization policies before going live.
