To loop an existing video to YouTube Live from an India-based VPS, upload the file to the server, use FFmpeg’s -stream_loop -1 input option, encode or stream-copy compatible tracks, and send the output to YouTube’s current RTMPS ingestion address with your stream key. First test the exact file, FFmpeg build, VPS capacity, and YouTube Live setup: the command and bitrate must suit your media and broadcast settings.
What you need before you start
- A video file you have the right to stream, stored on the VPS.
- A Linux VPS with enough sustained CPU capacity to encode at the chosen resolution and frame rate, if re-encoding is needed, and enough outbound bandwidth for the stream.
- FFmpeg built with the required encoders and RTMPS protocol support.
- A YouTube channel with live streaming enabled, plus the current ingestion address and stream key from YouTube Live setup.
- A way to access the server securely, such as SSH.
YouTube’s live encoder settings recommend RTMPS, a secure extension to RTMP. Use the ingestion details displayed by YouTube rather than relying on a copied or outdated server address. Keep the stream key private: do not put it in a public repository, screenshot, or command shared with others.
Choose the output settings
Pick a resolution and frame rate that match the source and the quality you intend to deliver. YouTube’s published H.264 recommendations include the following values; they are recommendations for those formats, not universal minimum requirements.

YouTube also lists H.265/HEVC and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS ingestion, with codec-specific settings. Check the current YouTube encoder settings table if you plan to use either codec. YouTube lists AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate (CBR), frame rates up to 60 fps, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds.

Allow headroom above the configured video bitrate for audio and network variation. Run a speed test from the VPS and monitor YouTube’s stream health; a nominal VPS bandwidth figure alone does not confirm sustained upload performance on the route to YouTube.
Install and inspect FFmpeg on the VPS
Install FFmpeg using the package manager for your Linux distribution, then check that the installed build is usable. Package names and available codecs differ by distribution and build, so consult the provider’s or distribution’s current documentation if installation fails.

- Check the version: run
ffmpeg -version. - Confirm encoders and protocols: run
ffmpeg -encodersandffmpeg -protocols. Look for the encoder you plan to use, such aslibx264, and RTMPS support. - Inspect the media: run
ffprobe -hide_banner /path/to/video.mp4. Note the video codec, dimensions, frame rate, pixel format, and whether an audio stream is present. - Check playback and rights: make sure the file plays correctly and that you have permission to broadcast its video and audio. A file that loops technically may still violate copyright or YouTube policies.
Store the stream key without exposing it
For a quick test, you can supply a stream key through a protected environment variable instead of typing it into a reusable command. This reduces the chance of accidentally saving the secret in a shared script or repository, but environment variables may still be visible to privileged users or processes on the server. Restrict server access and avoid printing the value in logs.
- In YouTube Live setup, copy the current RTMPS ingestion address and stream key.
- In your SSH session, set shell variables without sharing the session or recording it in a public log:
export YT_RTMPS_URL='YOUR_CURRENT_RTMPS_INGESTION_ADDRESS'andexport YT_STREAM_KEY='YOUR_STREAM_KEY'. - Use the values only in the FFmpeg output URL. Replace the example placeholders below with your YouTube-provided values; do not publish the completed command containing your key.
The exact URL form depends on the ingestion details YouTube provides. YouTube’s RTMPS ingestion guide explains that RTMPS sends RTMP through an SSL connection.

Run a looping stream with FFmpeg
Re-encode to H.264 and AAC
For a broadly usable example, this command loops an MP4 indefinitely, paces file input in real time, encodes video as H.264 with CBR-style rate control, encodes audio as AAC, sets a two-second keyframe interval for 30 fps, and publishes through RTMPS:

This example targets 1080p at 30 fps using YouTube’s published H.264 recommendation of 14 Mbps. It does not resize every input to 1080p: if your file has a different resolution or frame rate, adapt the output settings and bitrate to match the intended format and YouTube’s current table. If the input has no audio stream, the optional mapping expression -map 0:a:0? allows the command to proceed without one. If the chosen encoder is unavailable, select an encoder supported by your FFmpeg build and reassess whether the VPS can encode it in real time.
The -re option paces file input approximately in real time; -stream_loop -1 repeats the input indefinitely. The GOP values of 60 frames at 30 fps produce a two-second keyframe interval. For a 60 fps output, use a 120-frame interval and choose the corresponding YouTube bitrate recommendation. These options are not a universal recipe for every source, encoder, or ingestion configuration.

Stream-copy only when the source already fits
Stream-copying avoids re-encoding and reduces CPU demand, but only use it if the source video and audio codecs, pixel format, frame rate, bitrate, keyframe behavior, and container/output compatibility meet YouTube’s ingest requirements and your target settings. A file that is merely playable locally is not necessarily suitable for stream-copying to a live ingest. Verify the stream properties with ffprobe and test it in YouTube Live Control Room. If any required property does not match, re-encode instead.
Test the broadcast before leaving it unattended
- Start with a short test broadcast using the same file, FFmpeg command, VPS, and YouTube ingest settings you intend to use.
- Watch YouTube Live Control Room for stream health, incoming resolution, frame rate, and audio status.
- Check the FFmpeg output for encoder errors, dropped frames, connection failures, or repeated reconnects.
- Confirm that the video reaches the end and starts again as expected; listen for audio discontinuities at the loop boundary.
- Only leave the process running unattended after the test is stable. Use an appropriate service manager or process supervisor for your Linux distribution if you need the process to survive an SSH disconnect or restart after a server reboot; configure and verify that separately.
FFmpeg option behavior and available encoders can vary by build. Its command-line documentation describes input and output options, and its protocol documentation covers RTMP protocol behavior. Confirm support and syntax on the installed version.
India VPS checks and ongoing costs
An India location may affect latency and network routing, but location alone does not establish that a VPS can sustain a broadcast. Before choosing a plan, verify its current region, sustained CPU allowance, outbound bandwidth or transfer policy, support for long-running processes, and total recurring cost. There is no provider-specific price or performance figure established here. Test the actual route and stream from the server you plan to use.
- For re-encoding: ensure the CPU can encode your chosen codec, resolution, and frame rate faster than real time under sustained load.
- For stream-copy: confirm source compatibility first; lower CPU demand does not remove outbound bandwidth or connection requirements.
- For either method: budget upload capacity above the video bitrate and account for audio and operational headroom.
For YouTube monetization, a continuously repeated recording must still comply with YouTube’s copyright rules and channel monetization policies. Repetition by itself does not establish that content is original, rights-cleared, or eligible for monetization. Review YouTube’s current rules before streaming, especially when the file includes music, game footage, or other third-party material.
Common problems and fixes
- YouTube shows no incoming stream: verify that the stream key and RTMPS ingestion address are current and copied correctly, confirm RTMPS support in the FFmpeg build, and inspect FFmpeg’s connection error output.
- Stream health reports insufficient bitrate or instability: check the configured bitrate, run a speed test from the VPS, allow more upload headroom, and investigate provider transfer limits or route quality.
- The VPS cannot keep up with encoding: monitor CPU load and output speed. Reduce resolution or frame rate, use a suitable faster encoder preset if supported, or use stream-copy only if the source is compatible.
- Video or audio is missing: inspect stream indexes with
ffprobeand adjust the-mapoptions. Remove optional audio encoding only when the input genuinely has no audio. - Keyframes or quality do not match the target: align frame rate, GOP interval, bitrate, and codec with YouTube’s current settings for the intended output.
- The process stops after disconnecting SSH: run it under a suitable service manager or supervisor and verify behavior after disconnect and reboot; an interactive shell alone is not a durable process manager.
- Playback stutters or breaks at the loop point: inspect the source around its beginning and end for abrupt cuts, timestamp irregularities, or audio gaps, then test a corrected file.
