How to Use FFmpeg to Stream Ocean Ambience to YouTube Live from a Raspberry Pi

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You can use a Raspberry Pi as a small FFmpeg encoder to loop an ocean recording and send it to YouTube Live, but the exact command depends on your video source, Pi model and installed FFmpeg build. The workflow is: prepare the Pi and licensed media, create a YouTube stream, configure FFmpeg for YouTube’s ingest requirements, then test the feed before relying on it.

What you need before you start

  • A Raspberry Pi, boot media and a power supply suited to your exact Pi model. Raspberry Pi’s setup guide covers preparing boot media and powering the computer: Raspberry Pi getting started.
  • A network connection with enough sustained upload capacity for your chosen video quality.
  • An ocean ambience recording that you own or have permission to broadcast, plus a video source. If your source is audio only, provide a still image or ocean video as the visual; the sample command below assumes you have both an audio file and a video file.
  • FFmpeg with the encoders and formats required by your chosen settings. Package contents vary by operating system, architecture and build, so verify your installation rather than assuming a particular package includes every encoder.
  • A YouTube channel eligible to live stream. YouTube requires channel verification and no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. Its general help also states that streamers must be at least 16: YouTube live-streaming eligibility.

Prepare Raspberry Pi OS and check FFmpeg

Install Raspberry Pi OS on boot media and connect the Pi to power and a network. For a headless setup, Raspberry Pi recommends Raspberry Pi OS Lite and configuring remote access while preparing the system. Follow the current instructions for your model rather than choosing a power supply by guesswork. Raspberry Pi OS is Debian-based, and its documentation recommends APT for software management: Raspberry Pi OS documentation.

Install FFmpeg using the package manager for your OS, then inspect what is actually available:

ffmpeg -version
ffmpeg -encoders
ffmpeg -formats

Check for an H.264 video encoder and an AAC or MP3 audio encoder, and confirm that FFmpeg can read your input formats. The available encoders depend on the installed build. The FFmpeg documentation describes options and supported formats at ffmpeg.org/ffmpeg.html.

Create a YouTube Live stream and protect its key

  1. Open YouTube Studio and go to Live Control Room.
  2. Create a stream or select the one you intend to use.
  3. Copy the stream URL and stream key displayed for the encoder. The key tells YouTube where to send the feed and allows YouTube to accept it; treat it like a password.
  4. If you think the key has been exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and replace the value used by your encoder.

YouTube’s encoder setup explains where to find and use the stream URL and key: Set up your encoder for live streaming.

Prepare the audio and video inputs

Use media cleared for live broadcasting. A recording being freely available online does not itself grant streaming rights; check the license and terms from the recording’s owner or provider. YouTube may act on copyright-protected material, so retain evidence of the permission or license you rely on.

For an audio-only recording, pair it with a still image or a simple ocean visual loop to supply video. This guide does not establish a particular image or video command as tested on every Pi. The sample below expects ocean.mp4 to provide video and ocean.wav to provide sound; change those filenames and formats to match files on your device.

Choose YouTube-compatible settings

YouTube’s encoder guidance lists RTMP or RTMPS ingest, H.264 video, AAC or MP3 audio, and constant bitrate (CBR). YouTube recommends RTMPS where available because it encrypts data in transit to Google’s servers. Its recommended keyframe interval is two seconds and should not exceed four seconds. For stereo audio, YouTube recommends 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps. These are platform recommendations; choose a video bitrate from YouTube’s current resolution-and-frame-rate table that both your Pi and upload connection can sustain: YouTube live encoder settings, bitrates and resolutions.

  • Resolution and frame rate: Start with a setting the Pi can encode reliably. Higher resolution and frame rate require more encoding capacity and upload bandwidth.
  • Video bitrate: Use YouTube’s current table for your selected resolution and frame rate. Leave upload headroom instead of targeting the full measured connection speed.
  • Keyframes: Set a two-second interval, and do not exceed four seconds.
  • Audio: AAC or MP3 is supported; YouTube’s stereo recommendations are 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps.
  • Latency: For noninteractive ambience, standard or normal latency is a reasonable starting point. YouTube cautions that lowering latency can increase playback buffering; choose low latency when audience interaction justifies that trade-off.

Loop the recording and send it with FFmpeg

FFmpeg documents -stream_loop as an input option. The value -1 requests indefinite looping, and the option must come before the input it applies to. The following is an illustrative starting point, not a command verified on a particular Pi model, media pair or FFmpeg build. It assumes an MP4 video source and WAV audio source, H.264 and AAC encoders are available, and you have replaced the ingest URL and key with the values from Live Control Room.

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i ocean.mp4 -stream_loop -1 -i ocean.wav
  -map 0:v:0 -map 1:a:0
-c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -tune stillimage
  -b:v 2500k -maxrate 2500k -bufsize 5000k
  -r 30 -g 60 -keyint_min 60 -sc_threshold 0
  -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 -ac 2
  -f flv "rtmps://YOUR_INGEST_URL/YOUR_STREAM_KEY"

Replace YOUR_INGEST_URL and YOUR_STREAM_KEY with YouTube’s actual ingest URL and key, and select a video bitrate suitable for the chosen resolution and frame rate using YouTube’s current guidance. The example uses a 30 fps output and a 60-frame GOP to illustrate a two-second keyframe interval; if you change frame rate, adjust the GOP to preserve the intended interval. -tune stillimage is included for a largely static visual and can be removed for moving video. Verify the selected encoder exists with ffmpeg -encoders; encoder names and hardware acceleration options vary by build and Pi model.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

The two loop options apply separately to the first video input and second audio input. If the video file already contains the intended audio, remove the second input and map its audio stream instead. If durations differ, inspect the behavior with your own files: looping each input does not by itself guarantee a seamless visual or audio transition, or synchronized looping when the files have different lengths. Scaling, pixel format and timestamp handling may also need adjustment for particular inputs and builds.

Test before making the stream public

  1. Run an internet speed test from the network the Pi will use. Choose a bitrate your sustained upload can support.
  2. Start with a representative test using the same media, resolution, frame rate and encoder settings planned for the broadcast.
  3. In Live Control Room, confirm YouTube receives the stream and check its stream-health messages. Address warnings before relying on a long-running broadcast.
  4. Listen for audio clipping, silence, sudden loop boundaries or drift, and check that the visual remains present. Test long enough to reveal issues that a brief connection check would miss.
  5. Only then start or schedule the intended public stream using the controls in Live Control Room.

YouTube recommends testing with representative audio and motion, monitoring stream health, and selecting quality that is reliable for the connection. Its live-streaming help also explains latency options and buffering trade-offs: YouTube live control room and stream settings.

Troubleshoot common failures

  • YouTube does not receive a signal: Check that live streaming is enabled for the channel, then verify the ingest URL and key copied from the selected Live Control Room stream. If the key may be compromised, reset it and update FFmpeg.
  • FFmpeg reports an unknown encoder: The installed build may not include the requested encoder. Check ffmpeg -encoders and choose an encoder actually present, or install a build appropriate to your OS and architecture.
  • The input cannot be opened or mapped: Confirm filenames, paths and file permissions. Use ffmpeg -formats and inspect the input streams to ensure the requested video and audio streams exist.
  • The Pi drops frames or the stream is unstable: Lower the resolution, frame rate or bitrate, then test again. Compare the new bitrate with YouTube’s recommendations and the connection’s sustained upload capacity.
  • YouTube reports poor stream health: Review its specific warning, check the encoder settings and network, and repeat the representative preflight test before going live again.
  • Audio or picture stops at a loop boundary: Confirm that each -stream_loop -1 is before the correct input. Different file durations and codecs can create discontinuities; inspect and, if necessary, prepare media with matching durations or a deliberate transition.
  • The broadcast is interrupted by a rights claim or restriction: Stop using the disputed material until you verify the license and resolve the issue through YouTube’s available process. Technical ability to loop a file does not grant the right to broadcast it.
