Game Center is Apple’s service for gaming profiles, friends, achievements, leaderboards, challenges, and supported multiplayer. On current iPhone and Mac software, the Apple Games app is the main place to browse games and interact with friends; Game Center settings remain in Settings on iPhone and System Settings on Mac. A game must support each feature you want to use—Game Center does not add multiplayer or cloud saves to every title.
What Game Center does—and how it differs from Apple Games
Game Center provides the social and player-identity features that participating games can use: a profile, friends, achievements, leaderboards, challenges, activity sharing, and multiplayer invitations. The Apple Games app is the user-facing hub for finding games and viewing or interacting with supported activity. It is not a replacement for Game Center: your profile and privacy settings are still available in the operating system.

Support is title-specific. A game might use Game Center achievements but not challenges, or provide no Game Center multiplayer at all. Game Center also does not guarantee cross-platform play or transfer a game’s save data between devices.
What you need
- An iPhone or Mac with a supported, preferably up-to-date, version of iOS or macOS.
- An Apple Account signed in on the device and Game Center enabled.
- The game installed, with support for the Game Center feature you want to use.
- Notifications allowed if you want invitations or turn alerts.
Your Apple Account is the account used for Apple services. Your Game Center profile is the gaming identity associated with it; the nickname and avatar identify that profile to other players. Do not assume that Game Center is a universal save or purchase backup. Progress may depend on the game’s own account, iCloud, or another system.

Set up Game Center on iPhone
- Open the Apple Games app and tap Continue.
- Sign in to your Apple Account if asked, then complete the Game Center sign-in.
- Tap the avatar to choose or customize it. Tap Nickname to enter a name or use Apple’s suggestion.
- Choose who can see your gaming activity, then tap Continue.
You can also open Settings > Game Center to sign in, enable the service, or customize your profile. Apple’s iPhone profile instructions describe the profile options.
Set up Game Center on Mac
- Open Apple Games and choose Continue.
- Sign in. Choose Use This Account to use the Apple Account already on the Mac, or select a different account if the setup offers that choice.
- Choose an avatar and nickname, set activity sharing, and finish setup.
For system-level controls, open Apple menu > System Settings > Game Center. You can also manage the profile through the Apple Games app. See Apple’s Mac profile guide.
Edit your profile and activity visibility
On iPhone, open Apple Games, tap your avatar, choose Edit Profile, make changes to the avatar or nickname, and tap Done. On Mac, open Apple Games, open your profile from the avatar, and use its profile-editing controls. The profile can also be adjusted in Game Center settings; labels can vary slightly by software version.

It does not necessarily make the whole profile invisible: Apple says your nickname, avatar, and scores are visible to Game Center users. Add and manage friends
- Open Apple Games and select Friends.
- Select Add Friend, search for the person, and choose Invite.
- To review incoming requests, check Settings > Game Center > Friend Requests on iPhone, or System Settings > Game Center > Friend Requests on Mac.
Apple Games may suggest people from your contacts or people you have encountered through supported challenges or multiplayer. Apple’s friend-request instructions cover sending and accepting invitations.
If someone does not appear, check that they have set up Game Center and try the contact name or their Game Center nickname. Contact discovery or friend requests may be restricted by privacy settings or Screen Time. Some games have their own friend lists; adding someone in Game Center does not automatically add them in every game.
See achievements, scores, and friends’ activity
Open Apple Games and use your profile and friends views to inspect the activity available for your games. The exact cards and sections depend on the app version, the game’s Game Center support, and whether friends share their activity. On Mac, Apple documents a route to a friend’s record: open your profile, select All Friends, choose a friend, then open Challenges or Achievements. Friends’ current games may appear under Home > Friends are Playing, and suggestions for games to play together may appear under Friends > What to Play Together.

Start a multiplayer game
To invite a Game Center friend, open a game that supports Game Center multiplayer and use the game’s own multiplayer or invite controls. Select the friend if Game Center is offered. The button names and matchmaking flow are set by the game, not by a universal Game Center screen. Some games require a separate account or use their own friend system.

For nearby invitations, enable Nearby Players in Settings > Game Center on iPhone or System Settings > Game Center on Mac. Nearby players may connect over Wi-Fi or Bluetooth in supported games. This setting permits nearby invitations; it does not make every game discover nearby devices or turn on local multiplayer by itself. Both players need a compatible game and mode, connectivity, and permission to play.
Create a challenge on Mac
Challenges require a game with compatible Game Center leaderboards. In Apple Games:
- Download and open the supported game if you have not already.
- Select Friends, then Challenges, and choose the game.
- Choose an attempt limit: 1 Try, 3 Tries, or Unlimited.
- Choose a duration: 1 Day, 3 Days, or 1 Week.
- Select Players, search for a contact or Game Center nickname, select the player, and choose Continue.
- Select Start.
To leave, select the game, open its More menu, choose Leave Challenge, and confirm. These steps and options are documented in Apple’s Mac multiplayer guide. Not every title with achievements or a leaderboard supports challenges.

Control privacy, discovery, and notifications
In Settings > Game Center on iPhone or System Settings > Game Center on Mac, review the available controls:

- Help Friends Find You: Let Game Center friends identify you using the email address and phone number associated with your Apple Account.
- Nearby Players: Allow nearby-player invitations in supported games.
To receive invitations and turn alerts, check Settings > Notifications on iPhone or System Settings > Notifications on Mac. Find Games or Game Center if listed and allow the notifications you want. If no matching entry is obvious, search Settings for “Games” or “Game Center”; labels and notification controls can change between releases. Focus settings may also affect when alerts appear.
Set child-safety limits with Screen Time
On iPhone, go to Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions, turn restrictions on, then open App Store, Media, Web & Games. Game Center controls can include multiplayer games, adding friends, connecting with friends, screen recording, nearby multiplayer, private messaging, profile privacy changes, and avatar or nickname changes.
On Mac, open System Settings > Screen Time > Content & Privacy Restrictions > App Store, Media, Web & Games. Available controls include adding friends, connecting with friends, private messaging, profile changes, multiplayer, and nearby multiplayer. With Family Sharing and Screen Time set up, a parent or guardian can manage a child’s restrictions remotely. Exact options vary with software and account setup. Troubleshoot common Game Center problems
Game Center or Apple Games seems to be missing
They serve different roles: open Apple Games for the gaming hub, and look in Settings > Game Center on iPhone or Apple menu > System Settings > Game Center on Mac for service controls. Update the operating system, confirm you are signed in to an Apple Account, and complete setup in Apple Games. Feature and app availability can vary by region and software release.

I cannot find or add a friend
Confirm the person has completed Game Center setup and that you searched a usable contact or nickname. Review Game Center friend-request and discovery settings. If a child account is involved, check Screen Time restrictions for adding or connecting with friends. The game may instead require its own friend system.
An invitation or nearby player does not appear
First confirm the game supports the relevant Game Center multiplayer feature and both players are using compatible versions. Check the game’s own invitation flow, network connection, notification permissions, and Screen Time controls for multiplayer, nearby multiplayer, and connecting with friends. Nearby Players only permits supported nearby invitations; it does not guarantee that another player will appear.
Achievements, scores, or progress are missing
Check that the device uses the same Apple Account as before, that the game is the same title or edition, and that the relevant Game Center feature is supported. The game may use a separate login or save system, or its developer may have changed its integration. Verify the game’s account and save options before signing out or changing accounts. Game Center alone is not a guaranteed save-transfer or recovery service.

A game will not run on Mac
Not every iPhone or iPad game runs on Mac. Apple says many compatible games can be used on Macs with Apple silicon when their App Store listing identifies them as Designed for iPhone or Designed for iPad. Check the listing and the game’s own Mac requirements rather than assuming compatibility; Intel Macs and unsupported titles may not run it.
What Game Center does not provide
- It does not make a game compatible with Game Center if the developer has not implemented the feature.
- It does not guarantee multiplayer between Apple devices and Android, Windows, consoles, or other platforms.
- It does not universally sync saves, purchases, or progress between iPhone and Mac.
- It does not replace a game’s own account, servers, matchmaking, or communication tools.
- It is not Apple Arcade: Arcade is an optional subscription catalog, while Game Center is a social-gaming service. Neither is required for every game the other covers, and availability varies by region.
If data or purchases appear missing, first confirm you are using the same Apple Account and the same in-game account you used previously. Avoid repeated sign-outs as a routine fix; the consequences for game data depend on the title. Consult the game developer or Apple Support before changing accounts if progress is at risk.
