Circle Magic is an optional 2024-era D&D feature described in Forgotten Realms: Heroes of Faerûn. It lets a primary caster coordinate with nearby secondary casters to alter an eligible spell’s effect. It is not the same rule as ritual casting in the 2014 Basic Rules, and it is not automatically available at every table; ask your DM whether Circle Magic is enabled before planning around it.

What Circle Magic is—and which rules it uses

D&D Beyond describes Circle Magic as an optional feature for 2024 spellcasting classes and subclasses. The exact rules are in Forgotten Realms: Heroes of Faerûn; the publisher’s overview explains its general approach but does not reproduce every option’s thresholds, costs, or edge cases. D&D Beyond’s overview calls it “a method for amplifying a spell through coordinated teamwork.”

Circle Magic is a cooperative way to cast a spell using a spell slot. It is separate from the 2014 rules for casting a spell as a ritual, which can avoid a spell slot but takes additional time and requires the appropriate feature. Check which rules your campaign uses before treating either procedure as available.

How to cast a spell with Circle Magic

  1. Confirm the feature is in play. Ask the DM whether the campaign uses Circle Magic from Heroes of Faerûn. D&D Beyond’s support thread identifies it as optional in the 2024 implementation. Read the support thread.
  2. Choose an eligible spell and Circle option. The publisher overview says Circle Magic can be used for spells with a casting time of an action or at least one minute, when cast using a spell slot. Select the option that serves the group’s goal, and check the spell for any additional Circle-specific effect or requirement.
  3. Designate the primary caster. The primary caster leads, chooses the spell and its targets, supplies the normal components, and expends the spell slot.
  4. Have nearby secondary casters contribute. Secondary casters take the Magic action to lend their magic. Follow any extra requirements in the selected option or spell; some Circle effects call for secondary casters to expend spell slots, and some call for costly components.
  5. Continue the contributions for a longer casting. If the spell takes longer than one action to cast, secondary casters contribute on each turn while it is being cast. They also maintain concentration alongside the primary caster.

Use the sourcebook for the precise eligibility limits, distances, number of secondary casters, slot expenditures, components, and other conditions. The overview gives the structure and selected examples, not the complete numerical rules for all six options.

Choose an option for the effect you need

Circle option What it changes When it may help
Augment Extends the spell’s range. When the target or destination is farther away than usual.
Distribute Shares the burden of concentration. When maintaining concentration is the central concern.
Expand Increases the spell’s area. When a wider area of effect matters.
Prolong Extends the spell’s duration. When the group needs the effect to last longer.
Safeguard Protects allies from the spell. When allies may otherwise be caught in the effect.
Supplant Replaces costly material components with the circle’s strength. When the spell’s costly material component is the obstacle, subject to the option’s rules.

These are the six general options named in the publisher overview. The spell you choose may also have its own Circle effect, so read both the general option and the spell’s text rather than assuming the option alone determines every cost or outcome.

What spell-specific Circle effects can require

The publisher overview illustrates why Circle Magic costs must be checked spell by spell. In its Doomtide example, the Circle form requires at least five secondary casters and three black pearls from Pandemonium. It extends the spell’s range to one mile and sustains the effect until dispelled without concentration; each secondary caster must also expend a level 3-or-higher spell slot.

In the overview’s Spellfire Storm example, the Circle form uses a blue star sapphire worth at least 25,000 GP to extend range to one mile and remove concentration. Each secondary caster expends a level 3-or-higher spell slot. These are requirements for those described spell-specific effects, not universal costs for Circle Magic or for all six options.

How Circle Magic differs from 2014 ritual casting

In the 2014 Basic Rules, ritual casting is available only for a spell with the ritual tag and only to a caster with a feature that grants ritual casting. That feature determines whether the spell must be prepared or known. Casting it as a ritual takes 10 minutes longer than its normal casting time and uses no spell slot. See the 2014 Basic Rules on spellcasting.

A ritual that takes longer than one action also requires an action each turn and concentration; if concentration is lost, the casting fails without expending the spell slot. Circle Magic, by contrast, is a group contribution mechanic for casting a spell with a slot. The rules differ in eligibility, time, resources, and who participates, so “ritual” should not be used as a synonym for Circle Magic.

What to check before building a Circle strategy

  • Whether your DM has enabled the optional feature.
  • Whether the spell and its casting time qualify under the sourcebook’s complete rules.
  • Which Circle option—or spell-specific Circle effect—matches the goal.
  • How many secondary casters are required, how close they must be, and whether they need to contribute over multiple turns.
  • Whether secondary casters must spend spell slots or provide components, including costly ones.
  • Who must maintain concentration and what happens if it is interrupted.
  • Whether the option changes range, area, duration, concentration, ally safety, or component requirements in a way that actually benefits the group.
