To brighten a dark local video in OBS, add a Color Correction filter to that video source and adjust gamma, contrast and brightness gradually while checking both shadows and highlights. There is no documented universal preset: the right balance depends on the clip. For one repeating file, use a looping Media Source; for several files, use VLC Video with Loop Playlist.
Brighten the clip with a Color Correction filter
OBS’s Color Correction filter changes a source’s appearance without editing the original file. It is available on Windows, macOS and Linux. Apply it to the video source—not the whole scene—so overlays and other elements are not changed along with the footage. See the OBS Color Correction Filter guide and the OBS Filters Guide.
- Select the clip’s source. In the OBS Sources list, right-click the video source and choose Filters. OBS’s guide describes opening Filters from a source or scene’s context menu.
- Add Color Correction. In the source’s effect filters, add Color Correction.
- Adjust gamma first, then contrast and brightness. Move the controls in small increments while viewing representative dark and bright moments. Aim to reveal useful shadow detail without flattening the image or washing out highlights. OBS documents the controls but does not prescribe a dark-footage preset.
- Review the full range of the clip. Check scenes with deep shadows, midtones and bright areas, rather than judging one frame. Fine-tune until dark detail is more visible while the overall image still looks natural.
Color Correction controls and documented defaults
The OBS guide lists these ranges and defaults. Gamma, contrast and brightness default to zero; these are starting points, not recommended corrections for every clip.
| Control | Documented range | Default | Use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gamma | -3.0 to 3.0 | 0.0 | Adjust gradually to change the appearance of midtones and shadows. |
| Contrast | -4.0 to 4.0 | 0.0 | Balance shadow separation against the risk of flattening the image. |
| Brightness | -1.0 to 1.0 | 0.0 | Adjust overall brightness carefully to avoid losing highlight detail. |
| Saturation | 0.0 to 5.0 | 0.0 | Change color intensity if needed; it is not a substitute for correcting exposure. |
| Hue Shift | -180.0 to 180.0 | 0.0 | Shift hues; leave it alone unless the color balance needs correction. |
| Opacity | 0.0 to 1.0 | 1.0 | Control filter opacity. |
| Color Multiply | Not stated | #ffffff | Tints light colors. |
| Color Add | Not stated | #000000 | Changes dark colors. |
The control ranges and defaults above are those listed by the OBS guide; its page is dated January 12, 2022. A LUT is another filter option for color grading, but OBS does not say that one is necessary to brighten a dark clip. Start with Color Correction unless you have a specific grading reason to use a LUT.

Set up a single-video or playlist loop
Choose the playback source based on whether you need one file or a rotation of files. OBS documents these options in its Media Sources guide.
One local video: Media Source
- Add a Media Source and select the local video file.
- Enable Loop. OBS documents this option as Off by default.
- Leave Restart playback when source becomes active enabled if the clip should start from the beginning whenever the source becomes active. OBS documents this option as On by default. If you hide and reactivate the source, consider whether restarting is what you want.
- Add the Color Correction filter to this Media Source and assess the clip in the stream output.
OBS’s Media Source guide lists common supported local formats including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF and WebM. Its YUV Color Range setting defaults to Partial. Do not change the range just to brighten a clip: diagnose a source/range mismatch first.

Several videos: VLC Video
- Install VLC if it is not already installed; OBS says VLC must be installed for the VLC Video source to appear.
- Add a VLC Video source and build its playlist from the files you want to rotate through.
- Use Loop Playlist to repeat the playlist. OBS documents this setting as On by default.
- Apply Color Correction to the VLC Video source if the playlist footage needs adjustment, then review representative clips for differing exposure or color.
Check the actual stream before going live
A filter preview is useful, but make the final judgment on the actual stream output. Check different clips or sections of the file, including the darkest shadows and brightest highlights. If the correction helps one scene but damages another, use a gentler adjustment or consider whether a single source-level correction suits the whole loop.
Brightening an SDR clip does not turn it into HDR. YouTube’s HDR live streaming guidance applies to compatible HDR content and encoder workflows; it lists HEVC and OBS setup requirements, including OBS 30.1 minimum on the retrieved page. YouTube also says unsupported viewers receive SDR and that Live Control Room preview does not show HDR colors. Treat those as HDR-specific requirements, not a fix for ordinary dark SDR footage.

Troubleshoot dark or inconsistent playback
- The clip still looks dark: Check that Color Correction is attached to the video source and enabled. Adjust gamma, contrast and brightness in small steps, then inspect more than one point in the clip.
- Highlights wash out or the image looks flat: Back off the adjustment and recheck the balance between shadows, midtones and bright areas. OBS provides controls, not a guaranteed result or universal preset.
- Other scene elements changed too: The filter may be on the scene instead of the clip source. Move or add the correction at the video-source level.
- The clip does not repeat: For Media Source, check Loop. For a VLC Video playlist, check Loop Playlist.
- The clip unexpectedly starts over: Review Restart playback when source becomes active on Media Source. Its documented default is On.
- VLC Video is missing: Install VLC, which OBS requires for that source type to appear.
- Colors or levels seem wrong: Check the source’s range and format before changing YUV Color Range. Media Source defaults to Partial; an unnecessary range change can create a mismatch rather than solve one.
