Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteTo loop one study video on YouTube Live, add it to an OBS Media Source, enable Loop in that source’s properties, then connect OBS to YouTube Live with the stream URL and stream key. Test the video and audio in YouTube’s Live Control Room before making the stream public.
What you need before you start
- A video file saved locally on the computer running OBS, and permission to broadcast it.
- OBS and a YouTube channel eligible to livestream. YouTube requires a verified channel without live-streaming restrictions in the prior 90 days; first-time activation can take up to 24 hours. Check the current requirements in YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.
- A reliable upload connection with spare capacity. YouTube recommends roughly 20% more upload bandwidth than the stream’s total outgoing bitrate; see its live-streaming tips.
OBS documents common Media Source formats including MP4, TS, MOV, FLV, MKV, AVI, GIF and WebM. Check the OBS Media Sources guide if your file does not load or you need details on supported media.
Set up a single looping video in OBS
- Create or select a scene. In OBS, choose an existing scene or add one in the Scenes dock. The scene is the layout OBS sends to YouTube.
- Add the video source. In the Sources dock, click +, select Media Source, name it, and choose the local video file. OBS layers sources: entries higher in the Sources list cover those below, so arrange any background or text around the video. See the OBS Sources Guide.
- Turn on looping. Open the Media Source properties and check Loop. This setting restarts the file after playback finishes; OBS documents it as off by default, so verify it rather than assuming it is enabled.
- Check the audio. Play the source and watch its level in the OBS audio mixer. Make sure it is audible and that another captured audio source is not doubling it. OBS’s Quick Start Guide explains checking audio meters and selecting devices.
- Review the canvas and output settings. Confirm the video is framed as intended and that OBS is sending the scene you want. Set output resolution, frame rate and bitrate for your material and connection using YouTube’s current guidance; the cited setup material does not establish one universal setting for every stream. Leave the recommended upload headroom rather than planning to use the full measured connection speed.
Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- Open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and create a stream or select an existing encoder stream.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key from YouTube into OBS’s stream configuration. YouTube’s encoder instructions describe this connection. The key lets an encoder connect to your channel: keep it private, and reset it in YouTube Studio if it is exposed.
- Start streaming from OBS. Check the Live Control Room preview before starting the public broadcast. For an initial setup, use a private or unlisted test where appropriate.
- Confirm the picture and audio on the preview or watch page, then start the public stream when ready. Monitor the stream while it runs; YouTube and OBS both recommend testing and checking quality rather than relying on an unverified setup.
Loop a playlist instead of one file
For several study videos, use OBS’s VLC Video source rather than adding a separate Media Source for each file when you want playlist playback. VLC must be installed for the source to appear, and 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. In its documented properties, Loop Playlist is enabled by default. Use Media Source for a single file; use VLC Video when the playlist is the requirement. The distinctions and dependencies are described in the OBS Media Sources documentation.
Copyright and YouTube live-stream rules
Only stream videos and music you have the necessary rights to broadcast. A study, educational or background-use purpose does not by itself establish permission to rebroadcast someone else’s video or music. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content; a detected match may replace the live feed with a placeholder, interrupt the broadcast or terminate it. For licensed third-party material, the rights owner may need to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist, and having a license alone may not prevent an interruption. Read YouTube’s copyright guidance for live streams and its livestream terms.

Troubleshoot common problems
- The video plays once and stops: Open the Media Source properties and confirm Loop is checked. It is off by default for this source.
- The VLC Video source is missing: Install VLC. Match its architecture to OBS; 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC.
- The stream connects but YouTube shows no usable picture or sound: Check the Live Control Room preview, confirm the intended scene is active, and inspect OBS’s audio meters and source levels. Run another test before relying on the stream.
- The stream drops or quality degrades: Check the upload connection and leave roughly 20% headroom beyond the total outgoing bitrate, as YouTube recommends. Recheck the stream in Live Control Room and use YouTube’s current streaming tips.
- YouTube interrupts the broadcast for a copyright match: Stop and review the match and your rights. If you have a license for third-party material, contact the rights owner about Content ID allowlisting; do not assume the license automatically prevents detection or interruption.
- The encoder cannot connect: Recheck the stream URL and key in YouTube Studio and OBS. If the key may have been disclosed, reset it in YouTube Studio and update OBS with the new key.
